Revision of Helvetia (Araneae: Salticidae: Heliophaninae) Zoologia
Ruiz,Gustavo R. S.; Brescovit,Antonio D..
The genus Helvetia Peckham & Peckham, 1894 is revised. The species H. zebrina Simon, 1901 and H. zonata Simon, 1901 are synonymized with H. cancrimana (Taczanowski, 1872). The species H. insularis (Banks, 1902) is synonymized with H. albovittata Simon, 1901. The genus Deloripa Simon, 1901 is considered a junior synonym of Helvetia by transfer of its type species, resulting in the new combination Helvetia semialba (Simon, 1901). The species Cotinusa humillima Mello-Leitão, 1943, transferred to Helvetia by Galiano, is revalidated. Helvetia roeweri (Soares & Camargo, 1948) comb. nov. is transferred from the genus Naubolus Simon, 1901. The epigynal structures of the type species H. santarema Peckham & Peckham, 1894 and those of H....

Three new genera of jumping spider from Brazil (Araneae, Salticidae) Zoologia
Ruiz,Gustavo R. S.; Brescovit,Antonio D..
Nosferattus gen. nov., Capeta gen. nov. and Amatorculus gen. nov. are proposed from North and Northeastern Brazil. Due to the absence of teeth on the retromargin of the chelicerae, these genera are included within the Sitticinae, and are probably related to the genus Aillutticus Galiano, 1987, with which they share a high, broad carapace, rounded laterally behind the posterior lateral eyes, and the cephalic region slightly convex. Nosferattus is proposed to include five species: the type species Nosferattus discus sp. nov. and Nosferattus ciliatus sp. nov. from Maranhão, Nosferattus aegis sp. nov. from Tocantins, Nosferattus occultus sp. nov. from Maranhão and Ceará, and Nosferattus palmatus sp. nov. from Sergipe. Capeta and Amatorculus are both monotypic...

Redescription and notes on the natural history of the arboreal tarantula Iridopelma seladonium (Araneae: Theraphosidae: Aviculariinae) Zoologia
Almeida-Silva,Lina M.; Camacho,Agustín; Brescovit,Antonio D.; Lucas,Sylvia M.; Brazil,Tania K..
The original description of this species was based on a single female and no illustrations of reproductive organs were presented. After we collected several specimens identified as I. seladonium, we decided to redescribe this species and discovered that the male, previously described as belonging to this species, was misidentified by MELLO LEITÃO (1923). Thus, in this paper the male of I. seladonium is newly described and the reproductive organs of male and female are described and illustrated in detail. Notes on the behavior and natural history of I. seladonium are presented based on the observation of live specimens in the field and in captivity. An immature of I. seladonium was observed constructing a hinged retreat with silk and little pieces of bark,...

The first record of the family Cithaeronidae (Araneae, Gnaphosoidea) to the new world Zoologia
Carvalho,Leonardo S.; Bonaldo,Alexandre B.; Brescovit,Antonio D..
Three females of Cithaeron praedonius O.P.-Cambridge, 1872 (Araneae, Gnaphosoidea, Cithaeronidae), the most widespread species of the family, were found in urban areas in Teresina, capital of the state of Piauí, northeast Brazil. This first record of the family Cithaeronidae to the new world is explained by accidental introduction.

Spiders from the Island of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil: Part III: Gnaphosidae (Araneae: Arachnida) Zoologia
Brescovit,Antonio D.; Freitas,Gilson C. C.; Vasconcelos,Simão D..
The female of Zimiromus hortenciae Buckup & Brescovit, 1993 is described for the first time and Trachyzelotes kulczynskii (Bösemberg, 1902), a species introduced from Europe, is recorded for the first time on the island of Fernando de Noronha, state of Pernambuco. The latter, along with T. lyonneti (Audouim, 1826) recorded from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is the second species of this genus to be reported from Brazil. The spiders were collected with pitfall traps in five points of the island. Ecological data showed that Gnaphosidae was the fifth best sampled spider family, with 179 specimens, belonging to two species, T. kulczynskii and Z. hortenciae. Trachyzelotes kulczynskii was the most abundant with 118 adults while Z. hortenciae was...

Microhabitat selection and co-occurrence of Pachistopelma rufonigrum Pocock (Araneae, Theraphosidae) and Nothroctenus fuxico sp. nov. (Araneae, Ctenidae) in tank bromeliads from Serra de Itabaiana, Sergipe, Brazil Zoologia
Dias,Sidclay Calaça; Brescovit,Antonio D..
Microhabitat selection and co-occurrence of Pachistopelma rufonigrum Pocock (Theraphosidae) and Nothroctenus fuxico sp. nov. (Ctenidae), in tank bromeliads were investigated. Thermal conditions, inside and outside the plants, were measured in order to verify if the temperature of the water that accumulates inside the plant affects the behavior of these species. Measurements of foliar parameters were taken in order to evaluate if and how plant structure affects spider abundance and microhabitat selection. Apparently, differences in plant structure do not affect either spider abundance or microhabitat selection. No microhabitat preference was observed and co-ocurrence of both species was a random event. In addition, notes on the distribution range of P....
