Comparison between modelling and measurement of marine dispersion, environmental half-time and 137Cs inventories after the Fukushima Daiichi accident ArchiMer
Du Bois, Pascal Bailly; Garreau, Pierre; Laguionie, Philippe; Korsakissok, Irene.
Contamination of the marine environment following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) represents the most important influx of artificial radioactivity released into the sea ever recorded. The evaluation, in near real time, of the total amount of radionuclide released at sea and of the residence time in coastal waters were ones of challenges for nuclear authorities during this event. In the framework of a crisis situation, a numerical hydrodynamical model has been built and used ‘as is’. The concomitant use of this numerical model and in situ data allows the comparison of the simulated and measured environmental half-times. A tuning of the wind drag coefficient has been nevertheless necessary to reproduce the evolution of...

Impact of moderate energetic fine-scale dynamics on the phytoplankton community structure in the western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Tzortzis, Roxane; Doglioli, Andrea M; Barrillon, Stéphanie; Petrenko, Anne A; D'Ovidio, Francesco; Izard, Lloyd; Thyssen, Melilotus; Pascual, Ananda; Barcelo-llull, Barbara; Cyr, Frédéric; Tedetti, Marc; Bhairy, Nagib; Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Gregori, Gérald.
Model simulations and remote sensing observations show that ocean dynamics at fine scales (1–100 km in space, day–weeks in time) strongly influence the distribution of phytoplankton. However, only few in situ samplings have been performed and most of them in boundary currents which may not be representative of less energetic regions. The PROTEVSMED-SWOT cruise took place in the moderately energetic waters of the western Mediterranean Sea, in the southern region of the Balearic Islands. Taking advantage of near-real time satellite information, a sampling strategy was defined in order to cross a frontal zone separating different water masses. Multi-parametric in situ sensors mounted on the vessel, on a towed fish and on an ocean glider were used to sample at...

Wave- and current-induced bottom shear stress distribution in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Garreau, Pierre; Le Hir, Pierre; Forget, P.
Simulations of both currents and waves were performed throughout the year 2001 to assess the relative contribution of each to their overall erosive potential on the Gulf of Lions shelf. Statistical analysis of bottom shear stress (BSS) was compared to sediment grain-size distribution on the bottom. The hydrodynamic features of the bottom layer coincide with the distribution of surficial sediments, and three areas with different hydro-sedimentary characteristics were revealed. (i) The sandy inner shelf ( < 30 m) area is a high-energy-wave dominated area but may be subjected to intense current-induced BSS during on-shore winds along the coast and during continental winds mainly in the up-welling cells. (ii) The middle shelf (30-100 m) is a low-energy...

A multi-model assessment of the impact of currents, waves and wind in modelling surface drifters and oil spill ArchiMer
De Dominicis, M.; Bruciaferri, D.; Gerin, R.; Pinardi, N.; Poulain, P. M.; Garreau, Pierre; Zodiatis, G.; Perivoliotis, L.; Fazioli, L.; Sorgente, R.; Manganiello, C..
Validation of oil spill forecasting systems suffers from a lack of data due to the scarcity of oil slick in-situ and satellite observations. Drifters (surface drifting buoys) are often considered as proxy for oil spill to overcome this problem. However, they can have different designs and consequently behave in a different way at sea, making it not straightforward to use them for oil spill model validation purposes and to account for surface currents, waves and wind when modelling them. Stemming from the need to validate the MEDESS4MS (Mediterranean Decision Support System for Marine Safety) multi-model oil spill prediction system, which allows access to several ocean, wave and meteorological operational model forecasts, an exercise at sea was carried out...

Impact of oceanic fine scales during the intense convection event of winter 2012-2013 in the North-Western Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Boutet, Martial; Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck.
Several recent studies reveal the importance of submesoscale. The submesoscale dynamics is strongly ageostrophic, leading to intense vertical velocities and intense vertical buoyancy fluxes. Here, we study the role of (sub)mesoscale structures during deep convection events in the North-Western Mediterranean sea. By using numerical configurations at different spatial resolutions and adapted scale separation methods, the impact of submesoscale features is quantified during the different phases of the intense convection event of winter 2012-2013.

Modelling for anchovy recruitment studies in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Nicolle, Amandine; Garreau, Pierre; Liorzou, Bernard.
Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) is an important commercial species and one of the most abundant pelagic fish in the Gulf of Lions and the Catalan Sea. The factors influencing its recruitment are crucial to fisheries and ecological research. Among those factors transport of larvae by hydrodynamics (currents) is important because it determines whether the organisms can reach areas favourable to recruitment or are dispersed. Therefore, the first step in anchovy recruitment modelling is to simulate North-western Mediterranean Sea circulation. Several years (2001-2008) of hydrodynamics were simulated with the MARS-3D code. The resulting simulated currents and salinity are used by Lagrangian tool, Ichthyop, to transport anchovy eggs and larvae to the Western...

Contourite distribution and bottom currents in the NW Mediterranean Sea: Coupling seafloor geomorphology and hydrodynamic modelling ArchiMer
Miramontes Garcia, Elda; Garreau, Pierre; Caillaud, Matthieu; Jouet, Gwenael; Pellen, Romain; Hernández-molina, F. Javier; Clare, Michael A.; Cattaneo, Antonio.
Contourites are common morphological features along continental margins where currents encounter the seafloor. They can provide long-term archives of palaeoceanography, may be prone to sediment instability, and can have a great potential for hydrocarbon exploration. Despite their importance and increasingly recognised ubiquitous occurrence worldwide, the link between oceanographic processes and contourite features is poorly constrained. In particular, it is unclear under which specific conditions sediments are mobilised, modified and deposited by bottom currents. Here, we aim to determine key bottom current characteristics (velocity and bottom shear stress) affecting contourite deposition, by assuming that recent oceanographic regimes may be extended back...

From 2015 to 2018 four field experiments (seven legs) were performed in the Western Mediterranean basin during winter or early spring. The main objectives were the assessment of high-resolution modeling and the observation of mesoscale structure and associated ageostrophic dynamics. Thanks to the intensive use of a towed vehicle undulating in the upper oceanic layer between 0 and 400 m depth (SeaSoar), a large number of very high resolution hydrographic transects (total length about 10 000 km) were measured, observing mesoscale dynamics (slope current and its instabilities, anticyclonic eddies, submesoscale coherent vortices, frontal dynamics, convection events, strait outflows) and submesoscale processes like stirring, mixed-layer or symmetric...

Modeling of PCB trophic transfer in the Gulf of Lions; 3D coupled model application ArchiMer
Alekseenko, Elena; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Tronczynski, Jacek; Carlotti, F.; Garreau, Pierre; Tixier, Celine; Baklouti, Melika.
3D coupled modeling approach is used for the PCB dispersion assessment in the Gulf of Lion and its transfer to zooplankton via biogeochemical processes. PCB budgets and fluxes between the different species of PCB: dissolved, particulate, biosorbed on plankton, assimilated by zooplankton, which are governed by different processes: adsorption/desorption, bacteria and plankton mortality, zooplankton excretion, grazing, mineralization, volatilization have been estimated. Model outputs were compared with the available in situ data. It was found that the Rhone River outflows play an important role in the organism contamination in the coastal zone, whereas the atmospheric depositions are rather more important in the offshore zones. The transfer of the available...

Analysis of specific water masses transports in the Western Mediterranean in the MEDRYS1V2 twenty-one-year reanalysis ArchiMer
Barral, Quentin-boris; Zakardjan, Bruno; Dumas, Franck; Garreau, Pierre; Beuvier, Jonathan.
We present an analysis of specific water masses fluxes in the Western Mediterranean Sea issued from a twenty years (1992-2013) reanalysis (MEDRYS1V2). Water masses are identified on the base of salinity and potential density properties and computes; the fractions of each water mass involved in total flux are computed under the hypothesis assumptions of mixing lines schemes. It was first designed in order to avoid rough truncations between water masses on the T-S diagram when using fixed thermo-haline properties thresholds. The method does not use the temperature marker due to its high seasonal variability in near surface waters (0-200 m) and we consider that potential density is a better marker to discriminate deep and intermediate water masses. The...
