Performance of triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) reared in high carrying capacity ecosystem : survival, growth and proximate biochemical composition ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Gerard, Andre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Moriceau, Jacques; Peignon, Jean-marie; Heurtebise, Serge; Phelipot, Pascal.
Triploid oysters Crassllstrea gigas were: produced in 1990 by treating fertilized eggs with cytochalasin B (CS). Triploids, treated diploids, and controls were deployed early 1991 in a high carrying capacity ecosystem on the Eastern Coast of Normandy (France). A monthly monitoring in 1992 showed that triploids yielded significantly higher growth rate and biochemical composition. However, growth was more heterogeneous. No evidence was found for a length or weight bimodal frequency distribution within triploid groups after a 26 months rearing cycle. Triploids showed retardation of gametogenesis. Carbohydrates content in triploids remained almost constant (40%) from June to September. Their survival rates were significantly lower than controls. Moreover...

Gollasch, S; Kerckhof, F; Craeymeersch, J; Goulletquer, Philippe; Jensen, K; Jelmert, A; Minchin, D.
The North American bivalve mollusc Ensis directus (Conrad, 1843) (Bivalvia, Pharidae) is native to the Northwest Atlantic coasts from southern Labrador to northern Florida (Bousfield, 1960; Theroux and Wigley, 1983; Swennen et al., 1985; Abbott and Morris, 2001; Turgeon et al., 2009; Vierna et al., 2013). This species has been introduced outside its native range, with the first confirmed record from the German Bight in 1979 (Cosel et al., 1982). Thereafter, a subsequent secondary range expansion took place, and the species is presently known to occur from Spain to Norway, including the UK (e.g. Mühlenhardt- Siegel et al., 1983; Essink, 1985, 1986; Kerckhof and Dumoulin; 1987, Luczak et al., 1993; Rasmussen, 1996; Brattegard and Holthe, 1997; Eno et al.,...

Use of the kriging method for the stock assessment of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Chai, Ai-ling; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The krlging technique Is now employed ln more and more fields: mlnlng (Journel. 1977), hydrology (Delhomme, 197B; Shamsi et al" 1988; Dingman et al" 1988), fishery (Conan, 1989) and ecology (Robertson, 1987; Schotzko and O'Keeffe, 1989, 1990). Recent developments of the mathematlcal theory tend to extend the number of applications where Il may be used. Baslcally defined for the case of a statlonary spatial process, It now encompasses more general processes assuming less and less strong hypotheses (Intrinsic hypothesls, Intrlnsic generalised hypothesis, disjunctive krlglng). In its most general formulation, it allows to study the spatial structure of a process including large scale or local trends. The basic idea remains to take Into account the spatial...

Difficulties in sampling for estimation of phytoplankton biomass in estuarine conditions : variabilities and precisions at different temporal scales in the case of the bay Marennes Oleron ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Prou, Jean; Ravail, Brigitte; Maestrini, Serge.
Different sampling strategies have been tested for estimation of phytoplanktonic biomasses in a bay submitted to estuarine conditions and high velocity of currents. Daily variations showed that for a precision of 5% of the daily mean, it is necessary to sample with a 1 hour and a half time scale. Systematic sampling appears to be more preceise than the random sampling. A sampling during 35 days at low tide and at high tide, during the phytoplanktonic bloom, showed the large variability between the days. A precision of 30% of the mean biomass of the month is obtained with a 8 days time scale. Comparison between tidal cycle sampling (10% of precision) with a punctual sample in the middle of the day did not show large differences. As the main variability is...

Empirical modelling of the growth of Ruditapes philippinarum by means of non linear regression on factorial coordinates ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Bacher, Cedric.
In order to highlight the main factors accounting for the growth of clams in Marennes Oleron Bay, three locations were investigated in 1984-1985. First, factor analysis provided information on fluctuations of the environment. Second, principal components analysis was used to study ecological phenomena. The main axes explained the growth rate, which was included in an allometric model. Its properties were then studied by means of sensitivity analysis.

The human-mediated introduction of marine non-indigenous species is a centuries- if not millennia-old phenomenon, but was only recently acknowledged as a potent driver of change in the sea. We provide a synopsis of key historical milestones for marine bioinvasions, including timelines of (a) discovery and understanding of the invasion process, focusing on transfer mechanisms and outcomes, (b) methodologies used for detection and monitoring, (c) approaches to ecological impacts research, and (d) management and policy responses. Early (until the mid-1900s) marine bioinvasions were given little attention, and in a number of cases actively and routinely facilitated. Beginning in the second half of the 20th century, several conspicuous non-indigenous species...

Seasonal changes in carbohydrate metabolism and its relationship with summer mortality of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) in Marennes-Ole'ron bay (France) ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
This paper investigates the biological responses of Crassostrea gigas under traditional culture conditions on a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron bay. Summer mortality has been regularly observed in recent years in oysters reared using "on bottom" culture conditions. The present study attempts to provide a better understanding of the mortality phenomenon through biological parameters. Classical 'field parameters' such as mortality and growth rates, and quality index (dry meat weight/ dry shell weight x 1000) were monitored. Additional parameters, as biochemical composition of oyster meat and glucose incorporation capacity, were included as potential new bioindicators. The work highlighted a critical timing (May-June) preceding the summer mortality and...

Goulletquer, Philippe.
Winter mortalities of the manila clam rl1d1 tapes philippinarum along the french atlantic coasts : biochemical and ecophysio-logical aspects. For some years, high mortalities on Manila clam's breeding occured at the end of Winter on Atlantic coasts. The ecophysioIogicaI survey of population was performed using a ground culture technique. This permitted to characterize the conditions related with mortalities such as a loss in dry weight and a decrease of metabol ic reserves. A comparison of biochemical composition was conducted during the occurence of mortality on different sites along the Atlantic coast, and in different ecosystems (tidal land, oysters ponds).

Manila clam Tapes philippinarum culture: Sediment-clam interactions ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Robert, Rene; Trut, Gilles.
Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum) culture and sediment interactions were tested by comparing two rearing areas, including an oceanic ('Le-Ferret') and a more estuarine ('Les-Jacquets') sites in the bay of Arcachon (France). The growth of a calibrated clam population (10-mm spat) was monitored in these two areas with a concomitant sediment-water interface survey over a 1.5-year period. Two sites per area, including control and rearing plots, were sampled on a monthly basis. The potential clam farming impacts by bioturbation and interactions were examined at three sediment depths: 0-1, 1-2 and 2-10 cm. Moreover, the main hydrobiological parameters were measured on a weekly basis to establish a relationship between these parameters and sediment-water...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were...

Impact of climatic and anthropogenic changes on living resources in the Bay of Biscaye ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe.
Fisheries and aquaculture are of major importance to the coastal communities throughout the Bay of Biscaye. Almost half of French fishermen rely on catches from the Bay which achieve and estimated first sale value of more than €525m annually. Moreover, emblematic species such as eels have an additional economic as weil as social value for coastal communities. Similarly, the main French shellfish rearing areas are located within the Bay of Biscaye. They contribute predominantly to the yearly spat (mussel & oyster) recruitment, used to sustain the entire French shellfish industry. These activities have a direct impact on ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. Meanwhile, drastic environmental changes have been reported over the last 30 years, including a...

Optimisation of the traditional Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas Thunberg) culture on the French Atlantic coastline: autumnal fattening in semi-closed ponds ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Fouche, Dominique; Robert, Stephane.
Oyster farming in France is a traditional activity. Each year, 60,000 tons of C. gigas are fattened before being sold. Present-day fattening techniques for improving oyster taste and colour and increasing the meat weight are not particularly reliable. To optimize the fattening process, large phytoplanktonic blooms were induced in ponds, then distributed in oyster ponds. Despite the variability of the autumn weather conditions, diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) have been successfully cultured in outdoor ponds. During neap tides (when no seawater replenishes the water in the oyster beds), between mid-October and mid-December 1996, the fattening index (the weight of the meat) was constant or increased by 10-15% when a supplement of algae of 380.000...

Impact on non target organisms of anti-marine wood-borer treatments. Evaluation of stress imposed by treatments on organisms from test sites ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gras, Paul; Adessi, L..
In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel.
This study is part of a comprehensive research program focusing on the oyster shellfish management in the Marennes-Oleron Bay: Within this program, a task aimed to develop a biological model of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. Our study addressed the issue of pseudo-faeces production threshold under various diet quality levels. Pseudo-faeces sampling was carried out using particulate matter concentration below Il mg 1-1 The various modalities prompted us to define two pseudo-faeces production models. The first model was developed using natural seawater. The organic matter ratio ranged from 25 to 45% while the pseudo-faeces production threshold reached 2.9 to 4.4 mg 1-1 of total particulate matter. The second model was established using seawater...

Limiting nutrients of oyster pond seawater in the Marennes-Oleron region for Haslea ostrearia : applications to the mass production of the diatom in mesocosom experiments ArchiMer
Turpin, Vincent; Robert, Jean-michel; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Bioassays were carried out with the 'blue diatom' Haslea ostrearia Simonsen, which is responsible for oyster greening during the fattening period of Crassostrea gigas Thunberg in oyster ponds. Samples of seawater were taken from two oyster ponds: one without oysters and the other with 20 oysters per m_, maximal density allowed by the French AFNOR norm for 'refinement'. The aims were to clarify the nutrient requirements of this diatom, also to elucidate the eventual influence of C. gigas at this density on the seawater fertility and to envisage the mass production of this diatom by pond fertilization. Examination of cell numeric densities at the end of bioassays allows us to conclude that silicate was the first limiting nutrient, closely followed by...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Prou, Jean; Garnier, Jacqueline; Taillade, Sylvie; Heral, Maurice; Peyre, R; Faivre, C.
