Some Actiniaria (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) from the west coast of India Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Vennam, J..
A small collection of five species of Actiniaria from the west coast of India, including three new species, is described and discussed. It concerns: Anthoeua anjuna spec, nov., Bunodosoma goanensis spec, nov., Synantheopsis parulekari spec, nov., Paracondylactis cf. sinensis Carlgren, 1934, and Stichodactyla haddoni (Saville-Kent, 1893). Details are given on the synonymy, cnidom and distribution of these species.

On the classification of Corallimorphus (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia): the ratio of discal and marginal tentacles Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Grebelnyi, S.D..
Since the study of the genus Corallimorphus was started, the main taxonomic character used to separate species has been the ratio of the number of marginal tentacles to that of the discal ones. Polyps with a marginal:discal (m:d) tentacle ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 collected by the “Challenger” expedition were described as two distinct species, Corallimorphus rigidus and Corallimorphus profundus respectively (Moseley, 1877a, 1877b; Hertwig, 1882, 1888). This feature remained important in the taxonomy of the genus. For example, Fautin et al. (2002) subdivided the genus Corallimorphus into two groups of species: Corallimorphus rigidus, C. ingens, C. atlanticus, C. denhartogi (ratio of marginal: discal tentacles 2:1) were referred to the «rigidus» group. A new endemic Actinia species (Actiniaria: Actiniidae) from the central Macaronesian Archipelagos Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Ocaña, O..
The presence of some endemic taxa of the genus Actinia from Madeira and the Canary Islands is discussed. A new species, Actinia nigropunctata, is described, and some characters of the poorly known Actinia virgata are discussed. In addition, we discuss the main characters proposed by Schmidt (1971) to distinguish species of Actinia.

Bird observations in the Selvagens Islands (21-23 October 1978 and 27 May-7 June 1981) [CANCAP-Project] Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Norrevang, A.; Zino, P.A..
In the frame work of the CANCAP-Project of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, The Netherlands, the Salvage Islands were visited twice: in 1978 (October 21-23) and 1980 (May 26-June 7), respectively. Bird observations were made on both occassions.

The genus Telmatactis Gravier, 1916 (Actiniaria: Acontiaria: Isophelliidae) in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
Three species of the actinian genus Telmatactis Gravier, 1916, viz. T. forskalii (Ehrenberg, 1834), T. solidago (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) and T. cricoides (Duchassaing, 1850), occurring in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, are described and discussed. Detailed data on the cnidom of the three species are provided. The characteristic penicilli of members of the genus Telmatactis are discussed. These penicilli were classified by Schmidt (1969, 1972) as p-rhabdoids (= penicilli) B1b, but it is here claimed that they actually belong in Schmidt's B2 group (provisionally as penicilli B2c). They correspond in general form and as to their distribution in the actinian polyp with the more usual penicilli B2a sensu Schmidt (1969), but unlike these, they...

A study on the Gut contents of six Leathery Turtles Dermochelys Coriacea (Linnaeus) (Reptilia: Testudines: Dermochelyidae) from British waters and from the Netherlands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Nierop, M.M. van.
Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). For the purpose of comparison and identification an inventory was made of the cnidom of these six species (based on preserved material). Nematocysts of one or more of these species appeared to be present in each of the turtles, all six species being represented. One of the turtles in addition appeared to have...

Additional records of Actiniaria (Anthozoa) from Greece Naturalis
Chintiroglou, Ch.; Hartog, J.C. den.
A small collection of four species of Actiniaria, partly representing new records for Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, is described and discussed. These four species are: Bunodeopsis strumosa Andres, 1881, Edwardsia claparedii (Panceri, 1869), Actinia cari delle Chiaje, 1825, and Phymanthus pulcher (Andres, 1883).

Descriptions of two new Ceriantharia from the Caribbean region, Pachycerianthus curacaoensis n. sp. and Arachnanthus nocturnus n. sp., with a discussion of the cnidom and of the classification of the Ceriantharia Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
Two new Ceriantharia, Pachycerianthus curacaoensis and Arachnanthus nocturnus, both from the Caribbean region, are described. It is recommended to avoid the terms proto- and metamesenteries in taxonomie descriptions. The cnidom of the Ceriantharia is discussed; a subdivision of the spirulae (=b-rhabdoids) and penicilli ( = p-rhabdoids) differing from that of Schmidt (1972) is given. The anoplotelic character of the terminal tube of the penicilli (Schmidt, 1972) is doubted on the basis of light microscopical investigations. Mainly on the basis of the study of Botruanthus benedeni (Torrey & Kleeberger, 1909) (Botrucnidiferidae), the 2 newly described species (respectively belonging to the Cerianthidae and the Arachnactidae), and of the data available in...
