The brine shrimp Artemia , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in Artemia franciscana, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of Artemia nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 µg/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg... |

A standardized bioassay is described for the nutritional evaluation of Artemia nauplii and metanauplii using juvenile Mysidopsis bahia. This test is particularly suited to evaluate the dietary value of different strains and batches of Artemia . One day starved, fed or enriched Artemia metanauplii can also be tested. For this test, a homogenous population of freshly-released juveniles (less or equal to 24h-old) were produced in a mysid generator-separator. The test animals were transferred into an experimental apparatus, cultured under standard conditions and offered Artemia ad libitum. After 12 days, data on survival, length, individual dry... |

Different Artemia cyst samples harvested from the San Francisco and the San Pablo Bay regions (California, USA), and suspect because of their poor nutritional performance in fish and crustacean farming, have been analyzed for their chlorinated hydrocarbon and fatty acid content. These results have been correlated with survival, growth, and biomass production of larvae of the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia Molenock fed those different Artemia in a standard culture test. Differences in chlorinated hydrocarbon content do not correlate with differences in mysid culture performance. Fatty acid profiles reveal three groups of Artemia batches with high, intermediate, and low levels of... |

The development of a cost-effective algal substitute would greatly reduce operating costs of bivalve hatcheries and has therefore been the subject of many studies. Previous work has resulted in the development of a yeast diet with improved digestibility and nutritional composition. Preliminary trials showed that this diet can substitute up to 80% of the algal diet in the seed culture of the Manila clam Tapes semidecussata. In this communication we propose a culture test diet which will be used to study further dietary improvements of the yeast product.Juveniles of the Manila clam (1 to 5 mg unit weight) were batch cultured in a 51 recirculating system. Optimal daily ration for the algal control diet Chaetoceros... |
