Liquid chromatographic determination of efficacy of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in brine shrimp (Artemia spp.) used for prophylactic chemotherapy of fish OMA
Nelis, H.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
The brine shrimp Artemia , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in Artemia franciscana, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of Artemia nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 µg/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg...

Description of a standard bioassay with the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia (M.) for the evaluation of the nutritional effectiveness of Artemia nauplii and metanauplii OMA
Léger, P.; Johns, D.; Sorgeloos, P..
A standardized bioassay is described for the nutritional evaluation of Artemia nauplii and metanauplii using juvenile Mysidopsis bahia. This test is particularly suited to evaluate the dietary value of different strains and batches of Artemia . One day starved, fed or enriched Artemia metanauplii can also be tested. For this test, a homogenous population of freshly-released juveniles (less or equal to 24h-old) were produced in a mysid generator-separator. The test animals were transferred into an experimental apparatus, cultured under standard conditions and offered Artemia ad libitum. After 12 days, data on survival, length, individual dry...

A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae OMA
Devresse, B.; Candreva, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (Dicentrarchus labrax) in commercial hatcheries.

International study on Artemia : 25. Factors determining the nutritional effectiveness of Artemia : the relative impact of chlorinated hydrocarbons and essential fatty acids in San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay Artemia OMA
Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Millamena, O.M.; Simpson, K.L..
Different Artemia cyst samples harvested from the San Francisco and the San Pablo Bay regions (California, USA), and suspect because of their poor nutritional performance in fish and crustacean farming, have been analyzed for their chlorinated hydrocarbon and fatty acid content. These results have been correlated with survival, growth, and biomass production of larvae of the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia Molenock fed those different Artemia in a standard culture test. Differences in chlorinated hydrocarbon content do not correlate with differences in mysid culture performance. Fatty acid profiles reveal three groups of Artemia batches with high, intermediate, and low levels of...

International study on Artemia : 29. Nutritional evaluation of Artemia nauplii from different geographical origin for the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia OMA
Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly hatched nauplii from reference Artemia and from 3 other Artemia strains were tested for their effects on survival, growth and reproductive characteristics of the crustacean Mysidopsis bahia (M.). The reference, French (Lavalduc) and Chinese (Tientsin) strains produced significantly better results for all criteria tested than the Canadian strain (Chaplin Lake). Results are discussed together with those reported for other predators.

Promising results in the seed culturing of the Manila clam Tapes semidecussata with a manipulated yeast product as a partial substitute for algae OMA
Albentosa, M.; Naessens, E.; Léger, P.; Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of preliminary trials conducted with Tapes semiducussata spat using manipulated yeast products as substitutes for unicellular algae in their diets. Findings showed that spat growth increased with increasing amounts of algae in the artificial diet; growth was very poor when no algae were offered at all. It is concluded that manipulated yeasts may replace a substantial part of the algae in clam diets, but complete replacement is not possible, yet.

Manipulated yeast diets as a partial algal substitute for rearing bivalve molluscs: laboratory trials with Tapes semidecussata OMA
Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The development of a cost-effective algal substitute would greatly reduce operating costs of bivalve hatcheries and has therefore been the subject of many studies. Previous work has resulted in the development of a yeast diet with improved digestibility and nutritional composition. Preliminary trials showed that this diet can substitute up to 80% of the algal diet in the seed culture of the Manila clam Tapes semidecussata. In this communication we propose a culture test diet which will be used to study further dietary improvements of the yeast product.Juveniles of the Manila clam (1 to 5 mg unit weight) were batch cultured in a 51 recirculating system. Optimal daily ration for the algal control diet Chaetoceros...
