Live food mediated vitamin C transfer to Dicentrarchus labraxand Clarias gariepinus OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Dhert, Ph.; Pector, R.; Mai Soni, A.F.; Nelis, H.; Ollevier, F.P.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Live food enrichment techniques, using formulated diets and emulsions for improving the nutritional quality of Brachionus and Artemia , were studied as a tool for transferring ascorbic acid (AA) to fish larvae. Artemia nauplii enriched for 24h with an experimental emulsion containing 20% HUFA and 0%, 10% and 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) were administered to catfish larvae in a 20-day feeding trial. Survival was not affected by the dietary AA, but from day 7 onwards a significantly positive effect of supplemental AA on growth was demonstrated. At the end of the experiment the 20% AP group weighed 30% more than the control (0% AP), i.e. 9.5 and 6.3mg DW, respectively. Evaluation of the physiological...

Enrichment of live food with essential fatty acids and vitamin C: effects on milkfish (Chanos chanos) larval performance OMA
Gapasin, R.S.J.; Bombeo, R.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Nelis, H.J..
The effects of essential fatty acids (EFA) and vitamin C-enriched live food on growth, survival, resistance to salinity stress and incidence of deformity in milkfish larvae reared in tanks were investigated. Larvae were either fed rotifers cultured on Chlorella sp. and newly hatched Artemia nauplii (control), highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-enriched rotifers and Artemia nauplii or HUFA + vitamin C-enriched rotifers and Artemia nauplii. Milkfish growth in outdoor nursery ponds was also assessed to compare with growth in indoor tanks. Milkfish fed rotifers/Artemia enriched with HUFA (32-48 mg dry weight, DW) or HUFA + vitamin C (33-45 mg DW) exhibited...

Effect of vitamin C incorporation in live food on the larviculture success of aquaculture species OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A study was undertaken to upgrade the levels of vitamin C in Artemia and Brachionus through bioencapsulation and to investigate in this way the requirements for ascorbic acid (AA) during larviculture of fish and prawn. Ascorbyl palmitate (AP) was used as the vit C source because of its stable and lipophylic characteristics which allowed its incorporation in booster emulsions and its readily conversion into AA by Brachionus and Artemia . Under standard conditions very high levels of AA could be incorporated into the Artemia nauplii: supplementation of the enrichment emulsion with 20% AP (w/w) increased the AA-content up to 2000 ppm after 24h enrichment. Also in...

Improved larval survival at metamorphosis of Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) using omega3-HUFA-enriched live food OMA
Dhert, P.; Lavens, P.; Duray, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) larvae were fed Brachionus cultured on Chlorella and, as soon as ingestion was possible, different types of Artemia , i.e., nauplii of the San Francisco Bay (SFB) strain, Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain or GSL nauplii that had been bioencapsulated with an emulsion containing high levels of the omega3-HUFAs (highly unsaturated fatty acids) 20:5 and 22:6. San Francisco Bay Artemia with a good natural fatty acid profile and small body size could be offered earlier than the larger but HUFA-poor Great Salt Lake strain. The poor nutritional quality of the latter, however, could be corrected by enriching the nauplii with an omega3-HUFA...

International study on Artemia : 41. Influence of culture conditions and specific diapause deactivation methods on the hatchability of Artemia cysts produced in a standard culture system OMA
Lavens, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Using cyst material produced in an indoor cyst production system from 4 Artemia strains belonging to the species A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, California, USA; Macau, Brazil; Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA) and A. parthenogenetica (Lavalduc, France), different factors were studied that affect dormancy in brine shrimp cysts. Preliminary experiments under varying (a)biotic culture conditions revealed an interaction between environmental conditions and hatching characteristics. Results obtained under better-defined conditions demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the amount of food available to the adult Artemia populations and the hatchability of their encysted...

A simple test for quality evaluation of cultured fry of marine fish OMA
Dhert, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval Lates calcarifer and Siganus guttatus. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In Lates demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In Siganus on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the...

Maturation performance of Penaeus vannamei co-fed Artemia biomass preparations OMA
Naessens, E.; Lavens, P.; Gomez, L.; Browdy, C.L.; McGovern-Hopkins, K.; Spencer, A.W.; Kawahigashi, D.; Sorgeloos, P..
Few shrimp hatcheries successfully propagate captive broodstock on a commercial scale. Diets for acceptable maturation performance of Penaeus vannamei have typically relied on the inclusion of marine polychaetes (bloodworm) from Panama or Maine, USA, which are expensive and are of unpredictable supply. Studies were therefore undertaken at experimental and commercial scale to replace or supplement the polychaetes by frozen ongrown Artemia which were either non-enriched or bioencapsulated with specific boosters. In experiment 1 the control diet consisted of frozen squid only and was evaluated against broodstock diets where 60% of the squid was substituted by bloodworm or enriched Artemia biomass....

Preparation and use of Artemia as food for shrimp and prawn larvae OMA
Dhont, J.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The brine shrimp,Artemia has played a significant role in the expansion of the commercial production of shrimp and prawn during the last decade. Being an off-the-shelf and easily usable live food,Artemia is the main alternative for the natural diet of shrimp larvae. It appeared in the late 1970s that the nutritional value of Artemia, especially for marine organisms, is not constant, but varies both geographically and temporally, causing unreliable outputs in marine larviculture. Through multidisciplinary studies in Japan and by the International Study on Artemia, both the causes for nutritional variability in Artemia and methods to improve poor-quality...

New developments in the high density flow-through culturing of brine shrimp Artemia OMA
Lavens, P.; Baert, P.; De Meulemeester, A.; Van Ballaer, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
A closed culture system for the high density culturing of Artemia spp. in 300-liter tanks using a new formula of artificial seawater and micronized waste products from agricultural crops as food is described. Culture conditions are greatly improved by applying a new filter technique and an electronic transparency meter which controls food distributions automatically. A total volume of 6,000 liters of culture water recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a cross-flow sieve and a plate separator at a flow rate of 3000 liters per hour.Production yields obtained with this culture system, when extrapolated to a 1 m³ tank, indicate that 50 g of brine shrimp cysts can be converted into 20 kg of fresh (wet dry) pre-adult...

Maturation performance, offspring quality and lipid composition of Macrobrachium rosenbergii females fed increasing levels of dietary phospholipids OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Menschaert, G.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Similarly, no major differences in the lipid composition of the midgut gland, ovaries and muscle tissue of females could be detected. Results...

Characterization of brine shrimp Artemia from Cam Ranh Bay in Central Vietnam OMA
Quynh, V.D.; Lavens, P.; Léger, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Artemia cysts collected from inoculation experiments in Cam Ranh salterns are evaluated for their potential use in aquaculture. Cyst biometrics, hatching quality, naupliar fatty acid profile and naupliar growth were measured and compared to reference Artemia strains. Cyst characteristics reveal that the parthenogenetic strain (PR China) used in inoculations, was eliminated from the environment and that the remaining brine shrimp are likely to be composed of Macau and Great Salt Lake Artemia strains, and of their cross-breds. Differences in cyst diapause deactivation characteristics between Macau and Great Salt Lake Artemia may have resulted in the disappearance of Macau...
