INCORPORATING NUTRIENTS IN FOOD DEMAND ANALYSIS AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G.; Chung, Rebecca H.; Chiang, Frank F..
Two levels version of the Rotterdam demand systems were developed using utility theory with additional nutrient variables. Income, price, and nutrient demand elasticities were estimated. Results show that some nutrients are important factors in determining the demand for food items.

A DYNAMIC DIFFERENTIAL DEMAND SYSTEM: AN APPLICATION OF TRANSLATION AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
The differential demand system or Rotterdam model is extended to include lagged consumption through translation parameters, allowing habit and inventory effects. Applications of the model to annual U.S. expenditure and weekly juice sales data illustrate the importance of the time interval of an observation on the relative strengths of the habit inventory.

Substitution between domestic and imported orange juice and impacts of U.S. tariffs on prices and production AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Spreen, Thomas H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
A demand system model differentiating goods by product form and origin is developed to examine the impact of eliminating U.S. tariffs on orange-juice prices. An empirical analysis suggests a range of tariff impacts on prices depending on the degree of substitution between products. The model yielded similar results as alternative models when substitution was assumed to be relatively strong. In the long run, lower, without-tariff prices can be expected to lead to lower Florida orange planting and production levels. A sustained reduction in the U.S. OJ price of half the value of the FCOJ tariff is estimated to reduce orange planting levels by about 50% and orange production would declined by 24% by 2021-22.

Modeling consumer's perception of orange juice AgEcon
Gao, Xiaoming; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
A multiple indicator and multiple cause model with dichotomous indicators was used to study consumer's perception toward orange juice. Results indicate that recalls of orange juice advertising messages by the respondent had a positive impact on his/her perception toward orange juice. Results also suggest that selected socioeconomic variables were important determinants of consumer perception.

COMMODITY ADVERTISING, IMPORTS AND THE FREE RIDER PROBLEM AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying; Fairchild, Gary F..
Advertising without supply control in the U.S. orange juice industry illustrates the import dimension of the free rider problem. Estimates of supply response to advertising are offered for "Florida-grown" orange juice, as well as for U.S. orange juice imports into both Florida and other U.S. ports.

Impact of U.S. duty drawback on the demand for orange juice AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Fernandes, Waldir B.; Spreen, Thomas H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
A demand system model differentiating goods by origin is developed to examine impacts of duty drawback on U.S. orange juice exports and prices. An empirical analysis suggests that on average duty drawback has increased annual orange juice exports by about 16.5 million SSE gallons or 11% of export sales, and has supported the U.S. price of orange juice by about 2 cents per gallon. Not all benefits of duty drawback go to exporters. Importers who own drawback credits but do not export product may realize benefits by selling their credits to exporters. The analysis suggests these benefits effectively reduce by the U.S. orange juice tariff, positively impacting imports and negatively impacting the U.S. price.

IMPACTS ON U.S. PRICES OF REDUCING ORANGE JUICE TARIFFS IN MAJOR WORLD MARKETS AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Spreen, Thomas H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
A demand model is developed to examine the impacts on orange juice prices resulting from elimination or reduction of the tariffs on orange juice imposed by the United States, European Union, and Japan. An empirical analysis suggests that elimination of the U.S. tariff by itself would decrease the U.S. orange juice price by about $0.22 per gallon, while simultaneous elimination of the U.S., European, and Japanese tariffs would decrease the U.S. price by about $0.13 per gallon. Alternatively, reducing these tariffs according to the Swiss 25 formula would decrease the U.S. price by an estimated $0.09 per gallon. The U.S. produces about 1.4 billion gallons of orange juice annually and each penny reduction in the price impact increases U.S. orange juice FOB...

IMPUTED MISSING INCOMES AND MARGINAL PROPENSITY TO CONSUME FOOD AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study has demonstrated the use of a type 2 tobit model to impute the incomes for nonresponding households. The imputed incomes generated from the type 2 tobit model for nonresponding households indicate that average incomes of nonresponding households are slightly higher than those of responding households. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that under the assumption that the predicted incomes derived from the type 2 tobit model are accurate, the deletion of nonresponsidng households would cause an overestimation of the impact of income on food expenditures for households with annual incomes of less than $20,000.

A study of the demand relationship between fixed-weight and random-weight citrus AgEcon
Gao, Zhifeng; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
Using Rotterdam demand system this study examines the demand relationships among four random-weight (FW) and fixed-weight citrus (RW). Results indicated that FW and RW grapefruit (and FW and RW oranges) are not substitutes; however, RW tangerine is a substitute of FW tangerines. In addition, promoting FW grapefruit would not influence the demand for RW grapefruit and vice versa. Promoting FW oranges (or FW tangerines) would decrease the demand for RW oranges (or RW tangerines) and vice versa.
