Assessment of impacts from human activities on ecosystem components in the Bay of Biscay in the early 1990s ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Bertrand, Jacques; Brind'Amour, Anik; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena.
The ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management and, more specifically, the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive require the assessment of the state and dynamics of an ecosystem in order to determine suitable management strategies. This paper takes an analytical approach to assess the state of the Bay of Biscay ecosystem in the early 1990s, chosen as a period of reference because key monitoring data series have been collected since then. To assess the state of the ecosystem, the pressures exerted by six broad categories of human activities were examined. A literature review of the ecosystem components was made and a component tree was tailored according to data availability. Data rich components were subdivided into subcomponents for their...

Determining long‐term changes in a skate assemblage with aggregated landings and limited species data ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena.
Sustainable fisheries management requires assessment of exploited populations and communities. Traditional fisheries stock assessment methods need species‐specific input data, which for skates have only recently become available in Europe. To overcome this limitation, a Bayesian multispecies biomass production model was developed. In addition to aggregated landings, input data are short time series with species‐specific information (landings and biomass indices). Applying the approach to four main skate species and a group of two skate species, all managed together in the Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic), long‐term changes in the skate assemblage composition were identified. Since the 1990s, Leucoraja naevus became increasingly dominant, while the...

Scientific interest in deep-water marine resources has increased dramatically over the last 10-20 years as management bodies have sought advice on how to manage deep-water fisheries and protect deep-water ecosystems. The strengths and weaknesses of the management and monitoring of deep-water stocks, fisheries, and ecosystems in various areas of the world are described, with the objective of informing the EU FP7 DEEPFISHMAN project so that it can fulfill its primary aim, which is to develop strategic options for a short-and long-term management and monitoring ecosystem-based framework for the northeast Atlantic. To provide a baseline, the current monitoring and management regime in the northeast Atlantic is reviewed, followed by a brief description of the...

A random effects population dynamics model based on proportions-at-age and removal data for estimating total mortality ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Bravington, Mark V.; Lorance, Pascal.
Catch curves are widely used to estimate total mortality for exploited marine populations. The usual population dynamics model assumes constant recruitment across years and constant total mortality. We extend this to include annual recruitment and annual total mortality. Recruitment is treated as an uncorrelated random effect, while total mortality is modelled by a random walk. Data requirements are minimal as only proportions-at-age and total catches are needed. We obtain the effective sample size for aggregated proportion-at-age data based on fitting Dirichlet-multinomial distributions to the raw sampling data. Parameter estimation is carried out by approximate likelihood. We use simulations to study parameter estimability and estimation bias of four...

Développement de la pêche martiniquaise - Mise en valeur des ressources démersales : des bancs du nord de la Guadeloupe, entre 100 et 300 m de profondeur autour de la Martinique ArchiMer
Battaglia, Andre; Guillou, Alain; Lorance, Pascal; Reynal, Lionel.

Deschamps, Gerard; Miossec, Dominique; Pannier, Thierry; Huet, Jerome; Lorance, Pascal.
These studies of halieutic ecology produced at the request of Electricité de France by the French Institute of Research for Exploitation of the Sea in the Normand Breton Gulf must constitute one of the elements making it possible to come to a conclusion or not on the feasibility of the tidal power plant construction project; these studies have three parts: The first part discusses halieutic zooplankton. In the first place, the main species that constitute the exploitable living resources are considered, observed from the first stages of their life, in the egg or at different larval stages preceding the juvenile state. Also of interest are certain holoplanktonic groups. The whole of these observations establishes the status of zooplanktonic populations...

Observations of chondrichthyan fishes (sharks, rays and chimaeras) in the Bay of Biscay (North-eastern Atlantic) from submersibles. ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Latrouite, Daniel; Seret, Bernard.
Forty one manned submersible dives were carried out during 2 cruises in the Bay of Biscay covering a range of depth from about 100 to 2100 m. Chondrichthyan species were observed in most of the dives, some of them were easily identified and their behaviour could be studied. Twenty-two chondrichthyan species (9 sharks, 8 rays and 5 chimaeras) were recorded. Shark species were always seen active except Scyliorhinus canicula and Galeus melastomus. Some representatives were found motionless on the bottom, sometimes forming groups for the first species. Chimaeras appeared to strongly react to the presence of the submersible. The density of chondrichtyes and their relative frequency in the total fish assemblage were estimated, the results are globally consistent...

Interannual variability of fisheries economic returns and energy ratios is mostly explained by gear type ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Daures, Fabienne; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Lorance, Pascal.
According to portfolio theory applied to fisheries management, economic returns are stabilised by harvesting in a portfolio stocks of species whose returns are negatively correlated and for which the portfolio economic return variance is smaller than the sum of stock specific return variances. Also, variability is expected to decrease with portfolio width. Using a range of indicators, these predictions were tested for the French fishing fleets in the Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic) during the period 2001–2009. For this, vessels were grouped into eight fishing fleets based on the gears used and exploited species were grouped into five functional groups. The portfolio width of fleets ranged from 1–3 functional groups, or 4–19 species. Economic fleet...

Space-time modelling of blue ling for fisheries stock management ArchiMer
Augustin, Nicole H.; Trenkel, Verena; Wood, Simon; Lorance, Pascal.
Fishery catch data offer a rich potential source of information for management, if modelling can separate out the effects of fishing effort, species behaviour and population abundance. Here, we model catch data from the blue ling fishery off the northwest coast of Scotland, using generalised additive mixed models with a space time interaction represented via a novel tensor product of a soap film smooth of space with a penalized regression spline of time. The use of soap film smoothers avoids imposing correspondences between spatially adjacent areas that are in fact separated by the stock boundary. The comparison of the performance of the soap film smooth for space–time with that of a thin plate regression spline based on root mean squared prediction errors...

Variability in natural behaviour, and observed reactions to an ROV, by mid-slope fish species ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena.
The behaviour of eight large benthopelagic fish taxa was analysed using video records collected with an ROV on the mid-slope of the Bay of Biscay. The studied species were roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), deep-sea scorpionfish (Trachyscorpia cristulata echinata), and black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo), as well as individuals belonging to the families Alepocephalidae, Chimaeridae, and Scyliorhinidae, and to the order Squaliformes. Some of the observed fish were grouped at the family taxonomical level due to visual identification to species being unreliable. Assumed natural (undisturbed) behaviour was categorised in terms of (i) body position with respect to the bottom sea floor, (ii) locomotion and...

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. Europe has a long tradition of exploiting marine fishes and is promoting marine economic activity through its Blue Growth strategy. This increase in anthropogenic pressure, along with climate change, threatens the biodiversity of fishes and food security. Here, we examine the conservation status of 1,020 species of European marine fishes and identify factors that contribute to their extinction risk. Large fish species (greater than 1.5 m total length) are most at risk; half of these are threatened with extinction, predominantly sharks, rays and sturgeons. This analysis was based on the latest International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) European regional Red List of marine fishes, which was coherent with assessments of the status of fish stocks...

Effects of density dependence, zooplankton and temperature on blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou growth ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Lorance, Pascal; Fassler, S. M. M.; Hoines, A. S..
Blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou mean total length at age in the north-east Atlantic Ocean was found to vary by around ±6% during the period 2004–2011 and mean mass at age by ±22% during the years 1981–2013. Linear modelling provided strong evidence that these phenotypic growth variations can be explained by trophic conditions, mainly negative density dependence and also food availability, and a negative long-term temperature effect on asymptotic siz

Black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, in the northeast Atlantic: distribution and hypothetical migratory cycle ArchiMer
Farias, Ines; Morales-nin, Beatriz; Lorance, Pascal; Figueiredo, Ivone.
The biology, ecology, and dynamics of the deep-sea teleost black scabbardfish in the northeast Atlantic are reviewed. The black scabbardfish is a commercial bathypelagic species found in the NE Atlantic mostly from Iceland to the Canary Islands and Western Sahara, at depths from 800 to 1300 m. The spatial structure of its population is still uncertain, although the existence of one single stock that migrates around the NE Atlantic driven by feeding and reproduction is the most likely hypothesis consistent with available data. This review is based on data from commercial fisheries off the Faroe Islands, Hatton Bank, the west of the British Isles, and Portugal (mainland, Azores, and Madeira) and from Icelandic and Scottish scientific surveys collected...

Effets de la pêche et du réchauffement climatique sur la coexistence spatiale des espèces de poissons du golfe de Gascogne. Conséquences pour les pêcheries ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian; Thebaud, Olivier; Guyader, Olivier; Lorance, Pascal; Boucher, Jean; Chevaillier, Pierre.
The populations of fishes dwelling near the sea bed (demersal species) on the continental shelf are usually the object of intense commercial exploitation. The Bay of Biscay shelf is no exception. Hence, populations suffer from this exploitation. Moreover, the general role played by hydro-climatic variations in the regulation of the abundance of demersal fish populations (population dynamics) is traditionally admitted. In the Bay of Biscay, a warming of the surface water has been observed over the three last decades (Koutsikopoulos et al., 1998). Climate change therefore has potential consequences on fish communities. Thus, the structure and dynamics of fish populations on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay are susceptible to suffer both from the...
