Scales characterising a high density thin layer of Dinophysis acuta Ehrenberg and its transport within a coastal jet ArchiMer
Farrell, Hazel; Gentien, Patrick; Fernand, Liam; Lunven, Michel; Reguera, Beatriz; Gonzalez-gil, Sonsoles; Raine, Robin.
An investigation into the distribution of Dinophysis spp. in coastal waters off the south coast of Ireland was carried out in July 2007. Dinophysis acuta was present as a sub surface layer containing up to 55,000 cells L-1. The population had a high percentage of viable cells (mean: 89%; median: 94%; n = 24) with a high specific division rate (~0.55 d-1). The layer, of approximately 5 m thickness, did not coincide with the fluorescence maximum and was present as a patch of horizontal dimension less than 10 km x 7 km. Both conventional and towed undulating CTD used in conjunction with high vertical resolution sampling methods showed the patch of Dinophysis to move with a similar speed and direction as the coastal flow, which ran parallel to the coast in the...

Tidal and wind-event variability and the distribution of two groups of Pseudo-nitzschia species in an upwelling-influenced ría ArchiMer
Diaz, Patricio A.; Ruiz-villarreal, Manuel; Velo-suarez, Lourdes; Ramilo, Isabel; Gentien, Patrick; Lunven, Michel; Fernand, Liam; Raine, Robin; Reguera, Beatriz.
High-resolution physical and biological measurements were carried out in May-June 2007 during the ‘HABIT-Pontevedra 2007' survey in Ría de Pontevedra (Galician Rías Baixas, NW Spain) to study small-scale physical-biological interactions in the distribution of microphytoplankton, with special emphasis on harmful species. Longitudinal transects from the Ría to the adjacent shelf were sampled to describe the spring-neap tidal and circadian variability. An in situ particle profiler, a moored ADCP, and a towed undulating CTD (Scanfish) were used during the survey, which took place after an upwelling pulse at neap tides during a downwelling–upwelling cycle and coincided with the annual maximum of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. Cell maxima of P. seriata (2×106 cells L−1)...

Integrated understanding of initial conditions of early life stages using integrated ecosystem survey data ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Huret, Martin; Doray, Mathieu; Bourriau, Paul; Lunven, Michel.
Since 2000, the yearly acoustic pelagic survey of Ifremer in the Bay of Biscay designed for fish stock assessment of small pelagic fish has been converted into an integrated pelagic ecosystem monitoring plateforme. This has been achieved by coupling sensors and automating data acquisition streams. The data series now spans from 2000 to 2014. Together with data sensors and sampling designs, we present here an integrated study allowing to understand the spawning process of anchovy. We compare the maps of anchovy eggs obtained with CUFES (continuous underway fish egg sampler) with that of their spawning adults sampled at the same time by acoustics and identification trawl hauls. The distributions of eggs are surprisingly different than that of adults, with in...

Monitoring of sea scallops Placopecten magellanicus in bottom seeding trials using video in Miquelon bay, Saint Pierre et Miquelon, France ArchiMer
Robert, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier; Lunven, Michel; Caisey, Xavier; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Le Gall, Erwan; Vasquez, Mickael; Rodriguez, Julien; Detcheverry, Sebastien; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Placopecten magellanicus production in Saint Pierre et Miquelon (NW North Atlantic) has been developed through direct seeding of juveniles on leased areas. However, most of the culture occurs in deep water ranging from 30 to 70 meters, which requires a monitoring by video to facilitate the grow-out and survival evaluation. In August 2008, a submersible leaded structure was connected by a video cable to the surface and observation screen was defined through the video, an altimeter and two lasers. The pictures were recorded on board on hard drive and digital video recorder DVCAM, and data were georeferenced by VIDEONAV software. Analysing the video tapes allows to establish a thematic database on the ground structure, presence or absence of seeded and wild...

Vertical and horizontal controls of a haptophyte thin layer in the Bay of Biscay, France ArchiMer
Farrell, Hazel; Gentien, Patrick; Fernand, Liam; Lazure, Pascal; Lunven, Michel; Youenou, Agnes; Reguera, Beatriz; Raine, Robin.
Investigations into the phytoplankton of the Bay of Biscay in July 2006 revealed an extensive bloom of an unidentified haptophyte species. High-resolution sampling techniques identified the region in the vicinity of the mouth of the Loire estuary as an area of high (106–107 cells l−1) cell densities of the haptophyte in a thin sub-surface layer. This organism dominated the phytoplankton population regionally. Measurements of the vertical distribution of horizontal shear showed that the population, located at ca. 20 m depth, was confined to a layer lying between two density discontinuities with high shear. Physical measurements indicated that the population was being advected southeastwards, along the coast. Seaward spreading of the population was also...

Motility and autotoxicity in Karenia mikimotoi (Dinophyceae) ArchiMer
Gentien, Patrick; Lunven, Michel; Lazure, Pascal; Youenou, Agnes; Crassous, Marie-pierre.
Karenia mikimotoi is one of the most common red-tide dinoflagellates proliferating in the eastern North Atlantic and around Japan. Kills of marine fauna are associated with its blooms. In mixed water columns it migrates vertically, while in stratified water columns, the population remains confined within pycnocline layers. Wind events, increasing mixing and agitation initiate declines in its populations. This paper is focused on the formulation of mortality rate relative to shear rate. Autotoxicity is demonstrated by the use of a synthetic toxin. Bioconvection observed in cultures allows the establishment of a trade-off between phototropism, which leads to the local accumulation of cells, and their autotoxicity, which would prevent cell concentration. The...

The ZooCAM, a new in-flow imaging system for fast onboard counting, sizing and classification of fish eggs and metazooplankton ArchiMer
Colas, Florent; Tardivel, Morgan; Perchoc, Jonathan; Lunven, Michel; Forest, Bertrand; Guyader, Gerard; Danielou, Marie-madeleine; Le Mestre, Sophie; Bourriau, Paul; Antajan, Elvire; Sourisseau, Marc; Huret, Martin; Petitgas, Pierre; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste.
In this paper we present the ZooCAM, a system designed to digitize and analyse on board large volume samples of preserved and living metazooplankton (i.e. multicellular zooplankton) and fish eggs > 300 µm ESD. The ZooCAM has been specifically designed to overcome the difficulties to analyse zooplankton and fish eggs in the framework of the PELGAS survey, and provide high frequency data. The ZooCAM fish eggs counts were comparable to those done with a dissecting microscope. The ZooCAM enabled the accurate prediction and fast on board validation of staged anchovy and sardine eggs in almost real time after collection. A comparison with the ZooScan, on a more complex zooplanktonic community, provided encouraging results on the agreement between the 2...

Etude de la croissances des moules sur tois sites de centrales nucléaires. Gravelines - Penly - Plogoff ArchiMer
Dewamurez, J.m.; Lunven, Michel; Toularastel, France.

Vertical distribution of phytoplankton communities and relationships with physico-chemical parameters resolved by a fine scale sampler ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Youenou, Agnes; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Berric, Roger; Le Gall, Erwan; Kerouel, Roger; Labry, Claire; Aminot, Alain.
Many studies in coastal areas have shown the existence of thin chemical and biological layers. Their thickness and vertical extension are mainly controlled by hydrological and physical forcing. An accurate description of the phytoplankton communities growing within these layers is difficult to obtain without a well-adapted sampling system. A new Fine Scale Sampler (FSS) has been designed in Ifremer in order to study phytoplankton distribution and associated dissolved properties in high stratified water column. This FSS consists in a vertical array of 15 sampling bottles, horizontally laid with 20 cm intervals. Data acquired from a CTD and Fluorescence probe provide a precise FSS positioning at the depth of highest density gradient or at chlorophyll a...

Seasonal variation of riverine nutrient inputs in the northern Bay of Biscay (France), and patterns of marine phytoplankton response ArchiMer
Guillaud, Jean-francois; Aminot, Alain; Delmas, Daniel; Gohin, Francis; Lunven, Michel; Labry, Claire; Herbland, Alain.
Seasonal variations in nutrient inputs are described for the main rivers (Loire and Vilaine) flowing into the northern Bay of Biscay. The river plumes are high in N/P ratio in late winter and spring, but not in the inner plume during the summer. Conservative behavior results in most nutrients entering the estuary and eventually reaching the coastal zone. Temporal and spatial aspects of phytoplankton growth and nutrient uptake in the northern Bay of Biscay distinguish the central area of salinity 34 from the plume area. The first diatom bloom appears offshore in late winter, at the edge of the river plumes, taking advantage of haline stratification and anticyclonic "weather windows." In spring, when the central area of the northern shelf is...

Use of SeaWiFS data for light availability and parameter estimation of a phytoplankton production model of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Gohin, Francis; Delmas, Daniel; Lunven, Michel; Garcon, Véronique.
Processing SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) data provides useful information for the observation and modelling of the phytoplankton production of the Bay of Biscay. Empirical algorithms allow the retrieval of chlorophyll a and non-living Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations. These data are used to constrain a coupled 3D physical-biogeochemical model of the Bay of Biscay continental shelf Two issues are investigated, depending on the variable used, to constrain the winter to spring phytoplankton production for the year 2001. First, SPM data is used as forcing data to correct the corresponding state variable of our model. This allows the realistic simulation of the light limited bloom at the end of February 2001, as observed with...

Acquisition de données sur l'expansion de Caulerpa taxifolia et Caulerpa racemosa en rade d'Hyères et en rade de Toulon (France) ArchiMer
Belsher, Thomas; Lunven, Michel; Le Gall, Erwan; Caisey, Xavier; Dugornay, Olivier; Mingant, Christian.
The oceanographic cruise Califa 2000, as the previous cruise, which concerned the "Parc National de Port-Cros", had for its principal objective to furnish some elements susceptible to help in the control of Caulerpa taxifolia expansion and in the protection of particularly sensitive areas (national parks, patrimonial sectors, regions of socio-economic importance). The cruise lasted from the 4th to the 21st of September 2000 in the rade d'Hyeres, Porquerolles island included, and the rade of Toulon. This detailed prospection gives a location of C. taxifolia and C. racemosa, a new invasive seaweed. (C) 2003 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

A new device for in situ video and fluorescence analysis of marine particles. Applications to phytoplankton studies. ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Lehaitre, Michel; Nascimben, Eric; Rouvillain, Julien; Berric, Roger; Le Gall, Erwan; Gentien, Patrick.
A new video-microscope has been developed for in situ investigation on marine particles. A field of view is produced by a laser beam at 473 nm. Individual cells or particles that entered this field of view appear as individual diffraction-limited spots of light, which are resolved from the dark background. A mobile high-pass optical filter (610 nm) can be controlled and displaced in front of the CCD camera, allowing simultaneously imaging and discrimination between fluorescing and non-fluorescing particles. We have the possibility to add a band pass filter for phycoerytrin detection. The system allows white light visualisation of particles ranging from 10 µm to several millimetres, depending on the zoom magnification. With the 610 nm high pass filter, the...
