A new method of oyster cultivation, the Stanway oyster cylinder, has been experimented in the basin of Arcachon since the autumn of 1989. The first observations on three species of juvenile bivalves showed that this system could be successfully used with the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas . A comparative study of the growth of this last species, reared in cylinders and oyster bags, has been carried out since spring 1990. The first results showed that the growth of juveniles and 18 months old oysters in cylinders is not as good as in bags. A methology for the stocks assessments of cultivated oysters among along the French Atlantic coasts ArchiMer

An assessment of the reared stocks of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas ) has been recently conducted on the major French areas of molluscs culture. The methodology proposed included both estimates of densities obtained by subsampling in the field, and aerial photographs which covered the cultivated, intertidal area. The size and the number of samples were designed to reach a precision of 10% on the final assessment in each area. The field work consisted in weighing and counting the oyster in unit areas of 0.5 m2 for the bottom culture or in trays or bags, for the off bottom technique. These results give a better knowledge of the technique evolution and of the general structures in the cultivated areas.

Après une quinzaine d'années pendant lesquelles le captage de l'huître creuse a été normal ou pléthorique dans le Bassin d'Arcachon, la saison 1998 a conduit à un faible recrutement. Ce déficit de captage a suscité la mise en place, en 1999, d'un programme pluriannuel destiné à mieux comprendre les raisons de la variabilité du recrutement de naissains d'huîtres creuses. Le programme a ainsi été poursuivi au cours des étés 2000 à 2002.

Spatial and long-term changes in the functional and structural phytoplankton communities along the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer

Spatial and interannual variations of phytoplankton diversity were characterized along the French Atlantic Coast in relation to physical factors and large-scale climatic indices using phytoplankton surveys conducted from 1993 to 2010 in four geographical areas. This study relates phytoplankton diversity to oyster recruitment success by comparing a 'specific' versus a 'functional' diversity approach. Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. Durant chaque saison estivale, le laboratoire IFREMER d'Arcachon réalise, dans le cadre d'une convention avec la Section Régionale Conchylicole (SRC) ArcachonAquitaine, le suivi de la reproduction des huîtres creuses dans le Bassin d'Arcachon. Ce suivi a pour but de fournir aux ostréiculteurs les informations nécessaires à la mise en oeuvre du captage de naissains : - dates et importance des pontes, - vitesse de développement des larves, -  présence dans le milieu des stades les plus évolués (proches de la fixation). Le suivi de la reproduction est réalisé entre mi-juin et mi septembre, des pêches de plancton étant réalisées quatre fois par semaine dans différents sites représentatifs du Bassin. Role of tidal pumping on nutrient cycling in a temperate lagoon (Arcachon Bay, France) ArchiMer

The hypothesis of nutrient-rich pore-waters seeping at low tide through sediments to channel waters, which drain tidal flats during ebb, was evaluated in the Arcachon lagoon. The back of the bay is affected by freshwater inputs and underground freshwater discharges. The upper part of tidal flat consists of permeable sandy sediments, which are covered by a muddy sediment layer on the lower part. Permeable sediments outcrop in the bed of channel web. Surface water chemistry and early diagenesis processes in sediment were estimated by collecting channel web waters and cores on a tidal flat and in channels at different seasons and time scales. L’ostréiculture constitue la principale activité aquacole française. Cette activité de quasi-monoculture, basé sur l’élevage de l’huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, repose en grande partie sur le recrutement naturel de l’espèce qui assure 70% des besoins en jeunes huîtres (naissain). Or, depuis une dizaine d'années, dans les bassins d'Arcachon et de Marennes-Oléron, principaux centres de captage français pour l’huître creuse, la collecte du naissain ou captage devient encore plus variable qu’auparavant: à des années de captage presque nul (par exemple les années 2002, 2005, 2007) succèdent des années où il est surabondant (par exemple les années 2003 ou 2006). La conchyliculture, et principalement l’élevage de l’huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, constitue la principale activité aquacole française. Cette activité repose, en grande partie, sur le recrutement naturel de l’espèce qui assure 70% des besoins en jeunes huîtres (naissain) : cette activité de collecte s’appelle le captage. Afin d ' améliorer la précision des résultats et depuis 1986, quelques modifications ont été apportées à la stratégie d'échantillonnage qui avait été adoptée en 1985 : - prise en compte de la structure en âge de l a population, en différenciant les huîtres âgées de 1 an de celles d'âge supérieur, - traitement séparé des poches et des collecteurs pour l'élevage en sur élevé . Au cours des trois années , le stock d'huîtres en élevage est resté relativement stable : 1985 37 996 t ± 1 970 t précision 5,1% 1986 37 835 t ± 4 196 t précision 11,1% 1987 39 079 t i 3 350 t précision 8,6% avec environ 80% représenté par la culture à plat. Cependant, il est apparu que les différentes variables estimées et leur précision variaient d'une année à l 'autre en liaison...
