Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-mediated genetic interference (RNAi) is a widely used reverse genetic tool for determining the loss-of-function phenotype of a gene. Here, the possible induction of an immune response by long dsRNA was tested in a marine bivalve (Crassostrea gigas), as well as the specific role of the subunit 2 of the nuclear factor kappa B inhibitor (I kappa B2). This gene is a candidate of particular interest for functional investigations in the context of oyster mass mortality events, as Cg-I kappa B2 mRNA levels exhibited significant variation depending on the amount of ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) DNA detected. Elevated atmospheric CO2 is a major driver of global change in the ocean, causing sea surface temperatures to rise and acidification of marine environments. Together these stressors may have additive, synergistic or unforeseen consequences for many marine organisms, particularly during early life stages. The economically important King Scallop (Pecten maximus) is found along a large latitudinal gradient in the Eastern Atlantic, but it is unclear how this species will respond to changing environmental conditions. Effect of the probiotic strain Phaeobacter gallaeciensis after bacterial challenge on the complete larval development of Pecten maximus ArchiMer

The aim of this project was to evaluate the impact of probiotic (Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, X34 strain) treatment on the complete development (from veliger to metamorphosis) of Pecten maximus larvae in the context of a bacterial challenge and in conditions more representative of hatchery practices. To that effect, the present study was divided into two main steps. In the first, we used in vitro analyses (antibiograms and microplate assays) to validate the inhibition abilities of X34 on the growth of four Vibrio pathogen species. During the second step, we added pathogens (Vibrio pectenicida) into rearing tanks after two weeks of pre-treatment with the probiotic and then followed the larval development of Pecten maximus through the monitoring of survival...

Digestive microbiota provides a wide range of beneficial effects on host physiology and are therefore likely to play a key role in marine intertidal bivalve ability to acclimatize to the intertidal zone. This study investigated the effect of intertidal levels on the digestive bacterial microbiota of oysters Crassostrea gigas and clams Ruditapes philippinarum, two bivalves with different ecological niches. Based on the 16S rRNA region sequencing, digestive glands, seawater and sediments harbored specific bacterial communities, dominated by OTUs assigned to the Mycoplasmatales, Desulfobacterales and Rhodobacterales orders, respectively. Until 1960, the black scallop Chlamys varia (Linné, 1758) was largely distributed over the French Atlantic coast. Nowadays, most of the deposits are gone. Since controlled mollusc reproduction techniques are now relatively mastered, some reimplatation attempts have been conducted on a number of oyster culture sites, including the Arcachon Bay, from 1989 to 1992. Despite some good results in hatchery and nursery, the rearing attempts failed. Effect of a mono-specific algal diet on immune functions in two bivalve species - Crassostrea gigas and Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer

The impact of diets upon the fatty acid composition of haemocyte polar lipids and consequently upon immune parameters has been tested in the oyster Crassostrea gigas and the clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Oysters and clams were fed each of three cultured algae: Chaetoceros calcitrans, which is rich in 20:5(n-3) and 20:4(n-6) and poor in 22:6(n-3) fatty acids; T-Iso (Isochrysis sp.), which is rich in 22:6(n-3) and deficient in 20:5(n-3) and 20:4(n-6); and Tetraselmis suecica, which is deficient in 22:6(n-3) and contains only small amounts of 20:5(n-3) and 20:4(n-6).
