The new Common Fisheries Policy may exempt some species from the landing obligation if a high survival rate can be demonstrated among discards. This study focuses on the survival capacity of Nephrops norvegicus discarded from trawlers of the Bay of Biscay (France). Three sea trials were conducted on board 3 commercial trawlers and 15 fishing operations were sampled. The vitality of Nephrops was classed into three categories (healthy, moribund or dead) before release at sea and samples of healthy and moribund individuals were kept in captivity on Nephrops grounds for three days. A Generalised Linear Model was used to examine the variability in the proportion of healthy Nephrops discarded, which was significantly influenced by tow duration, duration of air... |

In the context of the new European Common Fisheries Policy and in particular the Landing Obligation, the two Producers Organisations, COBRENORD and OPN launched the REJEMCELEC project in partnership with IFREMER and net suppliers. It was set in a complementary way to the CELSELEC project. The main goal is to reduce whiting, haddock and pelagic discards for single bottom trawlers fleets targeting whiting, squids, cuttlefish and monkfish within the Western Channel. A specific fleet targeting hake and John Dory in Celtic Sea during summer (around Scilly Island) was also studied in order to reduce discards of small haddock, hake and boarfish. After a state of the art, an analysis of quantitative data and various workshops organized in partnership between... |

Besides understanding the effects of fishing on harvested fish stocks, effects on non-target species, habitats and seafloor integrity also need to be considered. Static fishing gears have often been mentioned as a lower impact fishing alternative to towed gears, although studies examining their actual impact on the seafloor are scarce. In this study, we aimed to describe fish trap movements on the seafloor related to soaking time and trap retrieval. Impacts on the seafloor of lightweight rectangular traps and heavier circular traps were compared. We used 3D video cameras to estimate sweeping motion on the seabed and penetration into the sediment during soaking time. The area and distance swept by each type of trap during retrieval was determined by a... |

Improving the selectivity of a fishing gear is one technical management measure to significantly reduce by-catch of non-commercial species or undersized individuals. The efficiency of selective device is mainly estimated by comparing species composition, the biomass and length spectrum of caught individuals and escapees while the functional traits of species are rarely accounted for. Using an innovative technical device to reduce catches of undersized individuals in a multispecific bottom trawl fishery in the Bay of Biscay, namely a T90 mesh cylinder, we measured functional traits on both caught and escaped individuals of 18 species. Using a Principal Component Analysis and K-means partitioning, we clustered species into 6 groups illustrating 6 different... |

In the context of the landing obligation set by the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus was identified as a species likely to have high survival rate when discarded in the bottom trawl fishery of the Bay of Biscay. Previous studies in this area reported a survival rate between 30% and 51%, but the experiments were done on a limited monitoring period and the seasonal variations were not investigated. This study was designed to obtain a reliable value for survival rate after a 14-day monitoring period in onshore tanks allowing considering delayed mortality. The study also tested the effect on the survival rate of using a discarding chute system, a sorting device that was made mandatory on the 1st of January 2017 for Nephrops... |

In the English Channel and Southern Bight, French demersal trawlers target a mix of demersal species including whiting (Merlangius merlangus). The discard ban to be implemented in January 2016 motivated fishermen to look for technical measures to reduce unwanted catches of undersized individuals (<27 cm). From 2008–2014, 18 different gear configurations were tested for bycatch reduction on board fleets of vessels of 16–20 m and 20–24 m. Selective devices tested included grids, square mesh panels (SMP), square mesh cylinders (SMC), various combinations of these devices and large mesh trawls. Using the catch comparison method, our results focus on six devices that proved efficient to reduce catches of undersized whiting, equally divided between the two... |

There are different approaches to selectivity, including increasing cod-end mesh size, square mesh panels and rigid grids. Selectivity grids have traditionally been produced to be as rigid as possible to maintain spacing but this can result in heavy, expensive grids, handling problems and brittleness. This paper presents an alternative approach using flexible polyurethane polymers to produce lightweight inexpensive grids with much improved damage tolerance and ease of handling, which also possess interesting selectivity characteristics. The material selection, design and development tests are described first, then preliminary sea trial results are presented. A flexible grid with a 20 mm spacing between bars performed successfully and enabled a reduction in... |

In the context of the reform of the Common Fishing Policy (CFP) undertaken by the European Union and implemented since 1st January 2014, the discarding of unwanted catches will gradually be forbidden. Article 15 of the CFP lays down a landing obligation for all species subject to European quotas and will come into force between 2015 and 2019 according to the species and the zones. The Regulation allows several exemptions including one for "species for which scientific proof shows high survival rates, due to the characteristics of the fishing gear, the fishing methods and the ecosystem" (EU Regulation No. 1380/2013). In particular, Nephrops were identified by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) as one of the species having the... |

Influence of the nature of the twine on the codend selectivity: Reminder: During the “SELECT 12” campaign in April 1996, we demonstrated that the nature of the material used for the manufacture of the trawl codend has an influence on the selectivity. Results showed that the use of single twine made of polyamide in the codend was more selective on hake and Nephrops than single twine made of polyethylene. Nevertheless single twine made of polyamide codend loses “flexibility” with use and therefore a study should be done to investigate its impact on selectivity (fishermen do not often use this equipment: however this 150 mesh net is particularly selective and it would be premature to discard it). Influence of the diameter of the twine and the mesh number on... |
