| Zojuist bereikt ons het bericht dat in mei de nieuwe (20e) druk van de Flora van Nederland zal verschijnen. Hoewel deze druk een voortzetting is van de nu 100-jarige Flora van Nederland, is hij ten opzichte van de laatste druk zowel qua uitvoering als qua inhoud dusdanig gewijzigd, dat van een nieuwe flora kan worden gesproken. Door de auteurs van het systematische gedeelte, F. Adema, G.J. de Joncheere en R. van der Meijden, zijn alle sleutels en beschrijvingen geheel herzien, terwijl E. J. Weeda alle standplaats- en verspreidingsgegevens in overeenstemming met de huidige situatie heeft gebracht. De nieuwe druk, uitgegeven door Wolters-Noordhoff te Groningen, zal ca. ƒ 60 kosten. |

| Evenals in voorgaande jaren organiseert het Rijksherbarium tezamen met de Commissie voor het Floristisch Onderzoek van Nederland van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Botanische Vereniging een aantal zaterdagexcursies. Ook dit jaar wordt getracht de zaterdagexcursies verschillende malen in te passen in bepaalde regionale onderzoeken. | Dr J. Hutchinson retired after 44 years of service in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (May 31, 1948), as Keeper of the Museum. He will devote his time mainly to the writing of some general handbooks especially his Genera Plantarum. He was succeeded by F.N. Howes, D. Sc. Mr H.K. Airy Shaw was appointed Principal Scientific Officer, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on Dec. 31st, 1948. |

| The frontispiece of this number serves to feast our eyes on the daring fecit of Mr. Corner who has now organized the Malaysian Moraceae, a work on which he has spent more than a decade of intensive work, following many years of earlier work in prewar time. Daring because it confronts us with an attempt to make an imaginary picture of the prototype, or archetype, of a family as it emerged from this study. I feel certain that this will stimulate interest in evolutional thinking on the basis of morphology and anatomy combined with geography. | The first instalment of ”Flora Malesiana” was published in the last days of December 1948. The issue was 2500 copies, of which 1500 have been distributed. It contains a notice on 4 unnumbered pages (the first the provisional title page) which explains the scheme for the whole of the Flora while a brief outline is given of the contents of volumes 1-4 of the first series. |

| Phyllitis scolopendrium (L.) Newm. weer op Yoorne. Nadat alle oude groeiplaatsen verdwenen waren, hetzij door natuurlijke successie, hetzij door droge zomers of door padverbreding, vond de botanisch analyst D. van der Laan, werkzaam aan het Biol. Station te Oostvoorne tegen de noordmuur van zijn huis in de gemeente Rockanje een klein ex., dat zich in de loop van 1961 goed ontwikkelde en de winter 1961-’62 goed doorkwam. VAN BALGOOY — A farewell to the Rijksherbarium (Summary of the farewell speech by Van Balgooy): I grew up on a farm in Central Java, adjacent to rain forest, where wild boars and leopards were our next-door neighbours. When still a toddler I started observing plants and animals and carried out lots of experiments of which I shall spare you the gruesome details. The Japanese occupation was a blessing in disguise for my brother and myself: no school and ample time to roam the forest. | A letter was read, addressed to the Secretary by Dr. A. A. W. Hubrecht, F. M. Z. S., calling attention to the account of a supposed new Mammal from Sumatra by him, published in the » Notes from the Leyden Museum” (vol. XIII, p. 241), under the belief that it would turn out to be an unknown species of Edentate, and which he had proposed to call Trichomanis hoevenii. Further inquiries and information received from Mr. Pruys van der Hoeven (after whom the supposed new animal had been named) had convinced Dr. Hubrecht that it was an Arctonyx (A. collaris), and that no further hopes could be entertained of the existence of an unknown Edentate in the forests of Sumatra. |

| This year it is 175 years ago that the Botanical Garden of Bogor (’s Lands Plantentuin, Buitenzorg) was founded. From a humble origin it became one of the most important gardens in South East Asia, if not of the whole tropical world. Its history has been extensively described by Rijnberg (1922) and briefly by Ms. Soegiarto (1992), unfortunately only in Dutch and Indonesian, respectively. Set up as an experimental garden for the cultivation of species of economic importance, it has been instrumental in the introduction of the oilpalm, rubber, and kina in Indonesia and surrounding countries.
