This study proposes a method to simulate the images of the future European geostationary sensor dedicated to ocean color sensor: the geostationary ocean color advanced permanent imager (GeoOCAPI), and it demonstrates the sensor capabilities to monitor the water composition throughout the day. The temporal variation of the coastal seascape is obtained from biogeochemical and hydrosedimentary models, the ocean-atmosphere radiance is obtained from the water and atmosphere radiative transfer model. The GeoOCAPI images are simulated with 400-m resolution, 18 spectral bands with associated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and with 1-h acquisition frequency, on the Gulf of Lion (Marseille, France) during a pollution event caused by the urban outfall of Cortiou in... |

An innovative experiment was carried out in the vicinity of the Rhône River mouth in February 2014. An instrumental package, composed of a CTD, a LISST-100 type B (1.25–250 μm) and a LISST-HOLO (20–2000 μm), was used to characterize the hydrological parameters and suspended particles properties (concentration, size, composition, shape and effective density) in the region of freshwater influence (ROFI) of the Rhône River. Besides, a coastal SLOCUM glider, equipped with a CTD and optical backscattering sensors at several wavelengths, was deployed to detail the spatial description of the hydrological parameters and some particle properties. Large river discharge (annual flood ~ 5000 m3 s− 1) and strong wind conditions favored the dispersal of the river plume... |

As the current main source of continental fresh water discharge in the Mediterranean Sea, the Rhone River inputs are a key forcing for ecosystems of the Gulf of Lions in the western basin. In order to better characterize the exchanges at this key interface, an oceanographic buoy has been installed at the Rhone River mouth in June 2009 for high frequency multiparameter measurements with bottom, water column and air sensors. Data are sent in near real time towards an onshore data center. |

A new benthic station equipped with oxygen microelectrodes and environmental sensors was developed by Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de L’Environnement (LSCE) and Division Technique of the Institut National des Sciences de L’Univers (DT-INSU) to perform in situ time series monitoring of sediment oxygen demand, linked to the mineralization of organic matter. The time series typically cover periods of 2-3 months, with a base frequency of 1 set of oxygen profiles per day. The profiling head assessed the lateral heterogeneity of the sediment oxygen demand at the beginning of the time series over a 0.8-m long rectangle to discriminate spatial and temporal variability. A continuous recalibration is performed using a moored oxygen optode anchored to the... |

Ocean color satellite sensors are powerful tools to study and monitor the dynamics of suspended particulate matter (SPM) discharged by rivers in coastal waters. In this study, we test the capabilities of Landsat-8/Operational Land Imager (OLI), AQUA&TERRA/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and MSG-3/Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) sensors in terms of spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions to (i) estimate the seawater reflectance signal and then SPM concentrations and (ii) monitor the dynamics of SPM in the Rhone River plume characterized by moderately turbid surface waters in a micro-tidal sea. Consistent remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) values are retrieved in the red spectral bands of these four satellite... |

Temperature distributions on continental shelves (depth < 150m) are often complex because the many physical processes induce very high spatial (both horizontal and vertical) and temporal variability. Temporal variability extends from a few tens of minutes for solitons (internal wave), a few hours for internal tide and inertial waves to a few days for upwelling or sub mesoscale dynamics. In the 1980s, satellites provided access to knowledge of surface temperatures. On the other hand, the internal temperature structure still requires in-situ measurements, which leads to the deployment of moorings at sea. These operations are often expensive and risky because the coastal zone is generally subject to intense activities such as fishing and sea conditions can... |

In the framework of sustainable development, the anthropogenic impact of large coastal cities on the marine ecosystem is a key issue. This project aimed to improve our knowledge in marine ecosystem response to the anthropogenic supplies (from rivers, sewage outflows and atmosphere) from large cities. In particular, the goal is to underline how the physical forcing decreases or increases the anthropogenic impact on the coastal ecosystem and the assessment of the chemical contaminant (PCB) inputs (from city to sea) and exports (from mid-sea to open sea). |

The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and... |

Our study highlights the Lagrangian transport of solid particles discharged at the Marseille Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located at Cortiou on the southern coastline. We focused on episodic situations characterized by a coastal circulation pattern induced by intrusion events of the Northern Current (NC) on the continental shelf, associated with SE wind regimes. We computed, using MARS3D-RHOMA and ICHTHYOP models, the particle trajectories from a patch of 5.104 passive and conservative fine particles released at the WWTP outlet, during 2 chosen representative periods of intrusion of the NC in June 2008 and in October 2011, associated with S-SE and E-SE winds, respectively. Unexpected results highlighted that the amount of particles reaching the... |

Trace elements and organic carbon inputs to the Mediterranean sea from an urbanized area (Marseille city) were studied and characterized during flood events. Inputs were brought to the sea by two small coastal rivers whose waters were mixed together and also with treated wastewaters (TWW) just before discharge. The monitoring of the rivers during flood events showed the high temporal dynamics of water flow, suspended particulate matter (SPM), organic carbon and trace metals concentrations, typical of small coastal Mediterranean rivers and requiring an appropriate sampling strategy. Dissolved/particulate partition coefficient (log Kd) in rivers during floods remained quasi-constant for a given trace element, but differed from one element to another... |

This report reviews the data obtained during Leg1 and Leg2 of the TURBIDENT oceanographic campaign (May-October 2018) carried out in the Iles d'Or (Toulon) area to the Banc des Blauquières (Cassis), within the framework of the ANR ASTRID Turbdident. The objective of this campaign was to acquire an innovative data set providing relevant information on the ocean surface layer under the illumination zone of the MIO HF radar, in particular sub-surface current profiles obtained using acoustic Doppler current meters (ADCP) operating in a stabilised manner below the surface from an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from Ifremer, and temperature profiles obtained using low-cost thermistor lines developed in-house, in addition to more conventional measurements of... |

Human pressures on ecosystems have increased significantly over the last decades, and especially Mediterranean coasts are strongly impacted by the development of big cities and industrialized area, such as the Bay of Marseille. Prior to any investigations on ecological or contamination impacts, it was necessary to understand sediment dynamics and its response to natural extreme events such as storm or heavy rainfall events. In situ observations were dedicated to understand the behavior of bed sediments, and their spatial distribution. A benthic station was deployed for three months to observe the impact of extreme events on hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in a critical zone of the study area. These measurementswere used to calibrate and validate the... |
