The aim of the project "rationalization of biological sampling for stock assessment of marine fisheries in the bay of Biscay" is to perform statistical methods and computer programs allowing to test prognoses and diagnoses based on estimates of fishing mortalities, recruitments, yields per recruit, and the "gain-loss" function. The project gathers the laboratories of the community working on the Bay of Biscay fisheries, namely - Santander in Spain (1. E. 0) - La Rochelle and Lorient in France (IFREMER). A descriptive study has been carried out. The prepared documents contain a description of the procedures used to collect the information, by each of the laboratories involved, on: - landings - biological samplings. More comprehensive data have been gathered... |

Conducted within the AMBIO project, this work deals with coral reef fish communities and associated habitats, in the New Caledonian lagoons. It relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. The field work was realized in 2013 in and around the Merlet Marine Reserve, in the south of New-Caledonia, and located within the “Grand Lagon Sud” world heritage area. The sampling design covers the entire area, and was stratified according to reef type (outer slope, reef flat, reef shallow terrace, lagoon, and fringing reef). 162 stations were validated within 6 days. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a list of 429 fish species (cf. AMBIO/A/1). 28... |

Observing spatial and temporal variations of marine biodiversity from non-destructive techniques is central for understanding ecosystem resilience, and for monitoring and assessing conservation strategies, e.g. Marine Protected Areas. Observations are generally obtained through Underwater Visual Censuses (UVC) conducted by divers. The problems inherent to the presence of divers have been discussed in several papers. Video techniques are increasingly used for observing underwater macrofauna and habitat. Most video techniques that do not need the presence of a diver use baited remote systems. In this paper, we present an original video technique which relies on a remote unbaited rotating remote system including a high definition camera. The system is set on... |

• This guide depicts the STAVIRO and MICADO rotating video techniques. It is intended for potential users, whether, environmental managing bodies, academics and other scientists. • The STAVIRO is a remote underwater unbaited video system for monitoring and studying shallow biodiversity, mostly in coastal areas (between 0 and 50 m). It enables observing habitat and vagile macrofauna within a 5m (and often 10 m) distance around the system. Because it rotates, the STAVIRO enables a panoramic view without distorting image due to wide angle. Many stations can be achieved quickly (ca. 20-25 stations per day with two systems) without the need for divers, and field work does not require a scientific background. It allows to survey extended areas and to replicate... |

With the worldwide growing of human populations in coastal areas, recreational activities are increasing and diversifying. New Caledonia is surrounded by a large lagoon that provides a shelter for these popular activities. Although most of the lagoon areas are managed through well-established Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and 80% of its surface is a World Heritage property, these uses result in accrued and increasing pressures on the coastal environment. This paper provides an overview of the research projects developed since 2000 to better understand and assess recreational uses in the New Caledonian lagoon. Most of these projects were conducted in collaboration with MPA, environmental managers and with stakeholders. |

The response of fish assemblages to changes in protection status is a major issue for both biodiversity conservation and fishery management. In New Caledonia, the Abore reef marine reserve harbours more than 500 fish species, and has been subjected to changes in protection status since 1988. The present study investigates the impact of these changes on a wide subset of species (213), based on underwater visual counts collected before the opening and after the closure to fishing of this marine protected area (MPA). We analysed the spatial and temporal variability in fish assemblage attributable to protection status, explicitly considering habitat. To understand the successive responses of fish assemblage to fishing and protection, the assessment models... |

Assessing the impact of management scenarii on multi-species multi-fleet fisheries requires spatially and seasonally explicit simulation tools. No such tools are currently available in fisheries science. This paper presents a software that evaluates the impact of management measures on the dynamics of a complex fishery. The simulation model is generic in order to be used for different types of fisheries. Existing knowledge about each fishery is stored in a database included in the software, and may be easily modified. This includes the parameters describing each population and each fishing activity. Furthermore, the software allows for flexibility in several model assumptions. Both management measures and behaviour of fishermen in reaction to these... |

Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. The study was based on data from the Abore reef Reserve in New Caledonia. Two sets of methods: 1-inferential linear models (ANOVA, GLM): 2- Partial Least Squares (PLS) methods of regression, were used to test the effects of this MPA. PLS enabled us to test simultaneously within a model, density, species richness, biomass and mean... |

The development of fishing efficiency coupled with an increase of fishing effort led to the overexploitation of numerous natural marine resources. In addition to this commercial pressure, the impact of recreational activities on fish assemblages remains barely known. Here we examined the impact of spearfishing limitation on resources in a marine protected area (MPA) and the benefit it provides for the local artisanal fishery through the use of a novel indicator. We analysed trends in the fish assemblage composition using artisanal fisheries data collected in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (BSNR), a Mediterranean MPA where the spearfishing activity has been forbidden over 15% of its area. Fish species were pooled into three response groups according... |
