During ecological investigations on the optimum culturing conditions of ciliates, we studied the influence of a number of abiotic factors on the reproductive potential of the hypotrichous ciliate <i>Euplotes vannus</i> Muller, such as the nature and the quantity of food, the temperature and the salinity. The experiments were run in petri dishes of 5 cm diameter containing 5 ml of food suspension, and were always started with conjugants. The microphagous <i>Euplotes vannus</i> thrives on a variety of food media. Excellent results were observed on homogenized bakers yeast, i.e. 10.000-20.000 animals in 5 ml of food suspension. In good culturing conditions the stationary phase was reached in 7 days, which implicates a mean rate of... |

Considering the necessity for standardization of toxicity tests and the need for simple and reliable routine tests, the <i>Artemia</i> Reference Center at the State University of Ghent in Belgium has developed a short term standard toxicity test with <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. This simple and inexpensive bioassay which can be used as a screening test to determine the toxicity of chemicals to aquatic organisms, has been discussed in detail during a special workshop devoted to toxicity tests with brine shrimp, at the occasion of the "International Symposium on the brine shrimp <i><i>Artemia</i> salina</i>"(Corpus Christi, Texas, USA; August 1979). Besides a few minor modifications, the test methodology was... |

The controlled nursery culturing of mollusc spat produced to date by millions in commercial hatcheries is an intermediate step in mollusc farming which is receiving more and more attention. Different technologies for nursery culturing indoors as well as outdoors have been developed at different places. The principles are always basically the same and consist of culturing postlarvae of a few millimeters to a size of a few centimeters in densities as high as possible in specific devices containing seawater which is eventually enriched with live unicellular algae or inert foods. This paper reports on the first results obtained in Belgium in an indoor experimental nursery with spat of <i>Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas</i> and <i>Venerupis... |

Standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms to detect the impact of chemicals on freshwater or marine ecosystems is an urgent necessity. From the variety of methods, criteria, and test species proposed, simple standardized tests for algae, crustaceans, and fish are now close to being adopted at the international level for the freshwater environment. Despite the same urgency, very little has been achieved for the marine environment. <i>Artemia</i> is an extremely suitable test-species since, contrary to all other organisms, it does not require continuous maintenance of stock cultures. Unfortunately none of the <i>Artemia</i> toxicity tests that have been worked out so far can be adopted as such as a representative standard... |

1. A simple cylindrical hatching and separator box is described for <i>Artemia salina</i>nauplii (and other phototactic invertebrates), in which the "corner seeking effect" responsible for poor separation is avoided, and from which nauplii can be recovered very conveniently. 2. Separation is achieved by partly unscrewing an internal and closed cylinder from its fixed counter-part glued to the bottom of the box, till two slits are freed through which the nauplii migrate from the darkened internal hatching cylinder into the illuminated exterior compartment. Rescrewing the former cylinder separates the larvae from debris and unhatched eggs. |

A variety of ecotoxicological methods have been worked out and are described in the scientific literature to experimentally predict the impact of chemical substances on aquatic terrestrial biota. Only during recent years have serious efforts been made at both the national and international level to select a few bioassays which should be standardized for general applicability. The choice for a standard bioassay, of the test species as well as of the criterion to assess the dose-effect relationship is a matter of the compromises which one is willing to make between the factors ecological representativeness and sensitivity on one hand, and mangeability in the laboratory and cost of the test on the other hand. This assertion is demonstrated for the aquatic... |

Growth on submerged substrates (fouling or "Aufwuchs") has already been the object of numerous studies especially with regard to its economic implications. The scarcity of investigations on the influence of pollution on development and evolution of the fouling-biocoenosis is surprising. As far as we know the smaller fauna and flora in this particular situation have never been studied quantitatively. Therefore, in 1963, 1964 and 1965, a number of experiments were carried out in the harbour of Ostend (Belgium) on submerged substrates of different nature, in order to study the following less known aspects of fouling: a) the successive stages in the development of fouling, from bacteria to macro-organisms. b) the influence of several factors on its... |

Starting with the major issues of the recent World Conference on Aquaculture, organized in 1981 jointly by the European Mariculture Society and the World Mariculture Society, the paper indicates a number of new and appealing maricultural technologies in shellfish and fish farming. It is postulated that several of the techniques described will have a far-reaching impact on maricultural production in the next decade. Special attention is given to the potential of the mass production of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> in extensive and intensive operations, and in particular to its key role in vertically integrated aquaculture. |

Although standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms is an urgent necessity, very little has yet been achieved for the marine environment. As a first step in this direction, a simple, inexpensive and reliable short-term routine test with <i>Artemia</i> larvae is proposed. This test is the result of an extensive study in our laboratory, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of <i>Artemia</i> bioassays published by various authors. The major advantage of the brine shrimp as a test species is its continuous availability under the form of dry cysts which can be hatched very easily; this eliminates all biological, technological, and financial problems of stock recruitment and/or culturing. The acute test... |

1. Ostend, situated in the middle of the Belgian coast, is a typical seaside resort with a population of 60,000 in the winter and up to 200,000 in summer. All sewage (to the major part raw dornestic sewage, to a lesser extent sewage of industrial origin) flows into its harbour, causing a daily in flow of ca. one part of sewage per 100 parts of harbour water. This heavy pollution load causes significant physico-chemical and biological consequences. 2. The number of "estuarine" bacteria has increased enormously due to the great daily input of organic matter. The number of coliform bacteria is high; it decreases towards the seaward entrance of the harbour. 3. The beach in the small vicinity of the harbour is polluted. 4. The harbour water contains low... |
