Sex and age composition of a Stoat population (Mustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758) from a coastal dune region of the Netherlands Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Bree, P.J.H. van.
The age composition of a sample of a Stoat population from the Netherlands was studied. Various relative age criteria were tested on their validity in separating age groups. The study of the layered cemental deposits contributed the most important part to the final conclusions. By using also the data on the sexual cycle of the Stoat, a theoretically expected age pyramid was calculated, which was compared with the actually found age composition.

The layered structure of bones of birds as a possible indication of age Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Utrecht, W.L. van.
A method of age determination, new in birds, is described. The method has been derived from similar methods commonly used to determine age of fishes, amphibians, reptilians, and mammals. It consists of demonstrating, by preparation of transverse transparent sections, the presence of annual deposits in the periosteal zone (= zone of outer circumferential lamellae) of bone. Evidence is presented that the layered structures in the periosteal zone are indeed annual and thus related with age.

North Jamaican Deep Fore-Reef Sponges Naturalis
Lehnert, Helmut; Soest, R.W.M. van.
An unexpectedly high amount of new species, revealed within only one hour of summarized bottom time, leads to the conclusion that the sponge fauna of the steep slopes of the deep fore-reef is still largely unknown. Four mixed gas dives at depths between 70 and 90 m, performed in May and June, 1993, at the deep fore-reef off the north Jamaican coast in front of the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, revealed a total of 27 demosponge species, ten of which are new to science.

Skrjabingylus nasicola (Nematoda) in skulls of Mustela erminea and Mustela nivalis (Mammalia) from the Netherlands Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Land, J. van der; Bree, P.J.H. van.
The occurrence of the skull parasite Skrjabingylus nasicola (Leuckart, 1842) in Stoats and Weasels from the Netherlands has been studied extensively. A redescription is given of certain morphological characters of the parasite, which includes the discovery of hitherto unknown peribuccal papillae. The genus Skrjabingylus is discussed. The extent of infection and the damage caused by the parasite in Stoats and Weasels has been assessed by studying collections of preserved skulls. Detailed comparisons are made between the infection percentages in both species of mustelids in different areas of the Netherlands and in different European countries. Also the relation between infection and age and sex has been studied. In the discussion an attempt is made to...

A new sponge Desmapsamma vervoorti spec. nov. (Poecilosclerida: Desmacididae) from Indonesia Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van.
A new poecilosclerid sponge species Desmapsamma vervoorti spec. nov. is described from several Indonesian localities: Ambon, Jedan, Salayar, Komodo, Java, and Irian Jaya. The species was earlier reported from several Indo-Pacific localities as D. anchorata (Carter, 1882), a common Caribbean shallow water species. Comparison with Caribbean specimens makes it clear that Indo-Pacific specimens demonstrate small but consistent differences.

Taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography of the marine sponge genus Acarnus (Porifera: Poecilosclerida) Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Hooper, J.N.A.; Hiemstra, F..
Cosmotropical species reported in the genus Acarnus, viz. A. innominatus Gray (1867), A. tortilis Topsent (1892) and A. souriei Levi (1952), are demonstrated to show small, but consistent interregional morphological differences, leading to the conclusion that these “species” are very probably complexes of closely related species derived from former widespread (Tethyan and/or Gondwanan) ancestors. On the basis of this analysis, six regional Acarnus forms are described as new species, viz. A. claudei n.sp. from South East Africa (formerly described as A. innominatus by Lévi, 1963), A. hoshinoi n.sp. from NW Australia (formerly described as A. innominatus by Hooper, 1986) A. deweerdtae n.sp. from the West Indian region (newly discovered material related to A....

A Bibliography of Pelagic Tunicates Naturalis
Waard-Pouw, G. van; Soest, R.W.M. van.
The present bibliography on pelagic Tunicates has been compiled over a period of 4 years, mainly by the first author. It is meant, not as an official publication, but as a working aid for students of pelagic Tunicates. It comprises about 1300-1400 different titles of books and articles. For obvious reasons the mere listing of all those titles in alphabetical order would be impractical for specialized demands. Splitting this list in as many subheadings as possible in a way like the Zoological Record would be ideal. However, many articles and books are difficult to place under one heading; the same titles would have to be mentioned under a number of different headings. With as many headings as possible this would mean a multiplication of the 1300-1400 titles...

Ecology and distribution of two sympatric, closely related sponge species, Halichondria panicea (Pallas, 1766) and H. bowerbanki Burton, 1930 (Porifera, Demospongiae), with remarks on their speciation Naturalis
Vethaak, A.D.; Cronie, R.J.A.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
North Atlantic coastal waters harbour two closely related sympatric sponges belonging to the genus Halichondria, viz. H. panicea and H. bowerbanki. From the study of their littoral and sublittoral microdistribution and ecology in the Oosterschelde area (= Eastern Scheldt, S.W. part of The Netherlands) it is concluded that both occupy largely similar niches, although it was found that H. panicea is better equipped to endure exposure to air since it occurs up to a higher intertidal level than H. bowerbanki, while the latter is better equipped to withstand siltation. Other environmental factors as depth, light, current velocity and salinity affect the distribution and behaviour of both species similarly. From these observations it can be inferred, that...

The genus Thalia Blumenbach, 1798 (Tunicata, Thaliacea), with descriptions of two new species Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van.
Investigations of the marine pelagic tunicate genus Thalia Blumenbach, 1798, resulted in the description of two new species, T. cicar and T. sibogae. In addition the three known subspecies of Thalia democratica (Forskål, 1775) are considered full species. The distribution of these species, including Thalia longicauda (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), is given and a key to the solitary and aggregate zooids of the species is added. The specific status of the six taxa of the genus is discussed.

Lissodendoryx species of the Indo-Malayan Archipelago (Demospongiae: Poecilosclerida) Naturalis
Hofman, Caroline C.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
A brief history of the genus Lissodendoryx Topsent, 1892 is given and the Indo-Malayan representatives are described based on material collected by the Siboga Expedition (1899-1900) and the Indonesian-Dutch Snellius II Expedition (1984-1985), on reexamination of previously described specimens from the area, and on the literature. Previously, ten species assigned to Lissodendoryx were reported from this area. Two of these, L. baculata Topsent, 1897 and L. tawiensis Wilson, 1925, do not conform to the presently employed definition of the genus Lissodendoryx. One, L. sinensis Brøndsted, 1934, is considered a junior synonym of L. ternatensis (Thiele, 1903). L. grata (Thiele, 1903) is a valid species of Lissodendoryx, with L. oxytes De Laubenfels, 1954 of the...

A new sublithistid sponge Monanthus ciocalyptoides n.sp. (Porifera, Halichondrida), from the West Indian region Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Zea, S..
Monanthus ciocalyptoides n. sp. is described from two localities in the West Indian region, viz. the Saba Bank (17°25’N 63°33’W) and the Colombian Caribbean (11°20’N 74°09’W). The genus was hitherto known from South African waters only, by the type-species M. plumosus Kirkpatrick (1903). The systematic status of the new species and the genus as sublithistid members of the order Halichondrida is discussed.

Affinities of the family Sollasellidae (Porifera, Demospongiae). I. Morphological evidence Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Hooper, J.N.A.; Beglinger, E.; Erpenbeck, D..
Comparison of Sollasella digitata Lendenfeld, 1888, up until the present assigned to its own family Sollasellidae Lendenfeld, 1887 in the order Hadromerida, and Raspailopsis cervicornis Burton, 1959, assigned to Raspailiidae Nardo, 1833 in the order Poecilosclerida, leads to the conclusion that both should be considered congeneric and are best assigned to a single genus Sollasella. This conclusion is based on examination of habit and skeletal characters of the type material of S. digitata and both type and freshly collected material of S. cervicornis. The conclusion is strengthened by the discovery of a new species, Sollasella moretonensis n.sp. collected in North Australia (primarily in the northeastern coast, but also an isolated record from the...
