Le risque thermique : caractérisation des environnements thermiques des 3 sites atliers de MOREST en lien avec les mortalités observées sur le terrain ArchiMer

Temperature affects undoubtedly the 3 working sites where, systematically, the observation of the first abnormal mortalities coincides with a water temperature of around 19°C. The nature of the processes implied could have a "cumulative" effect, affecting the physiology (this phenomenon has been observed with other marine species) or a "threshold" effect, acting only as a trigger. The question has not been answered yet. The kinetics of the thermic evolution around the mortality period has to be studied in depth in order to understand if this temperature acts more as an "associated factor", during a chronic stress period, or during an acute stress, as suggested by the "on-bottom/off bottom" mortality model of the Marennes Oléron Bay [12].

This work presents interactions between quantitative and qualitative river freshwater inputs and the shellfish farming (oyster and mussel) in the Pertuis Charentais. The quantity of freshwater (i.e. salinity) seems to have a weak influence on the shellfish farming contrarily to its quality determined by particulate and dissolved matters contained in the water. In autumn and winter, large precipitations have a "globally positive" effect amending the coastal ecosystem. Associated dissolved nutriments and the organic matter largely determine the quality of the coming spring growth for bred shellfish, itself controlling in turn the annual yield efficiencies. Bilan d'étude sur la croissance de la moule (Mytilus edulis) sur bouchots et filières dans les Pertuis Charentais entre 2000 et 2005 (Réseau REMOULA) ArchiMer

En France, dans les pertuis Charentais plusieurs travaux de recherche ont été réalisés sur la moule (Mytilus edulis) dans les années 80 et 90 (1), (2), (3) 1. Ce n’est qu’en 1999 et 2000 que le programme européen Essence(2) a permis une comparaison entre l'élevage sur filières et l'élevage sur bouchots. Cette comparaison a mis en évidence une différence de croissance en partie liée au temps d'émersion des moules élevées sur bouchot (4), (5). Suite à ces résultats, la profession, représentée par les SRC de Ré Centre Ouest, et la Section Régionale Conchylicole Poitou- Charentes demande à Ifremer de mettre en place un réseau de suivi "biologique" dans les Pertuis Charentais.

Summer mortality of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) in relation to environmental rearing conditions ArchiMer

The purpose of this study is to investigate summer mortality of the cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in relation to culture practices in the traditional oyster production region of Marennes-Oleron (France). Four oyster rearing conditions, varying culture location ("on-" or "off-bottom"), and site depth (65% to 80% daily immersion termed "deep" or 45% to 65%, termed "shallow") were studied to compare biologic performance and maturation status of oysters, in relation to sediment and water column parameters. The most severe mortality occurred in June to July in "on-bottom" reared oysters (25%), as compared with 10% mortality in "off-bottom" cultured oysters. En complément des travaux réalisés dans le cadre du contrat INVABIO par le LBEM de La Rochelle pour parvenir à une caractérisation génétique de l'espèce Ocinebrellus inornatus, (Garcia-Meunier, 2002). Nous avons étudié la possibilité de caractériser les deux espèces Ocinebrellus inornatus (Récluz, 1851) et Ocenebra erinacea (Linné, 1758) présentent dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron depuis 1995 (Pigeot et al., 2002) par une approche biométrique différente de celle présentée par Houart (2001) dans son ouvrage. This paper investigates the biological responses of Crassostrea gigas under traditional culture conditions on a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron bay. Summer mortality has been regularly observed in recent years in oysters reared using "on bottom" culture conditions. Mortalité de l'huître Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron: étude de la variabilité spatiale de son environnement et de sa biologie par un système d'informations géographiques (SIG) ArchiMer

The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. Mise au point technique de l'élevage de l'Ombrine Sciaenops Ocellata ArchiMer

Depuis maintenant plus de trois ans, l'équipe IFREMER de Martinique travaille à la mise au point technique de l'élevage de l'ombrine subtropicale (Sciaenops ocellata), dans des conditions intensives. En matière de reproduction, l'équipe IFREMER a engagé dès 1987, une opération de transfert de la technologie Américaine de maturation et ponte grace au contrôle environnemental de la température et de la photopériode. Près de 50 millions d'oeufs ont été produits en 1989, à partir de 5 femelles de 5 à 6 kg. Apports terrigènes et salinité côtière: cas du Bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer

Entre 1977 et 2015, la température des eaux de surface du Bassin de Marennes-Oléron (référence station Boyard) a augmenté en moyenne de 1,5 °C. Le réchauffement principal a eu lieu entre les années 1982-83 et 1997-99. L’étude compare deux périodes « avant » (1977-1991) et « après » (2000-2015) le réchauffement. Elle met en évidence une « salinisation » estivale des eaux de surface dans le nord du bassin de Marennes-Oléron, avec +1,2 ; +0,7 et +0,7 de salinité pour les mois de juin, juillet et août. Optimisation of the traditional Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas Thunberg) culture on the French Atlantic coastline: autumnal fattening in semi-closed ponds ArchiMer

Oyster farming in France is a traditional activity. Each year, 60,000 tons of C. gigas are fattened before being sold. Present-day fattening techniques for improving oyster taste and colour and increasing the meat weight are not particularly reliable. To optimize the fattening process, large phytoplanktonic blooms were induced in ponds, then distributed in oyster ponds. Despite the variability of the autumn weather conditions, diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) have been successfully cultured in outdoor ponds. Summer mortality of selected juvenile pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas under laboratory conditions and in comparison with field performance ArchiMer

This study reports mortality under laboratory conditions in unselected controls and two lines of juvenile Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas, previously selected for their high or low survival in the field during the summer period. Oysters were also deployed in field conditions and mortality between both conditions was then compared. In the laboratory, mortality was observed in all experiments and it always lasted for a week indicating that mortality under laboratory conditions was a short-term event. It was also shown that mortality could be repeated for a batch in several experiments using oysters which never experienced any abnormal mortality.
