Cavolinia inflexa (Lesueur, 1813) proves not to be composed of subspecies or formae, or to show clinal variation. Maximum shell length varies between 4 and 7 mm, shell width between 2 and 4 mm, length/width ratio between 0.51 and 0.81. A geographic pattern in the occurrence of different length/width ratios, on which the subdivision of this species was always based in literature, could not be found. Frequency analyses of length for all samples combined did not show subdivision in local populations and length/width ratios over all samples did show only a pattern of shell growth. There is no valid ground for the subdivision of the species into different taxa. |

Re-examination of the Diacria quadridentata species group based upon morphology of the shell and zoogeographic data, led to a new classification comprising the recent taxa: D. quadridentata, D. costata with an equatorial and a central water form, D. danae with an equatorial and a central water form, D. schmidti schmidti, D. erythra crassa and the fossil taxa D. schmidti cocidentalis and D. erythra erythra from surface sediments. A method has been developed to estimate the relative age of the population, based on the development of shell and soft parts. Shell growth in the period of minute and adult stages together does not exceed 0.2 mm, and differs from species to species. |

After a few years of serious illness Dr. W. L. van Utrecht, born 13 December 1926 in Tiel, died still very unexpected at the age of 67 year on 10 August 1994. After a study of chemistry and biology he joined from 1952 till 1963 the working group for Cetacea of the Netherlands Organisation of Applied Sciences (TNO), and the University of Amsterdam in the periods 1953-1956 and 1963-1988. In the season 1953/54 his first large expedition took place with the catcher “Enern”, a three month trip for whale marking, and two month visit to South Georgia. As an inspector he made a cruise to the Antarctic ocean with the Dutch whalefactory ship “Willem Barendsz” in the seasons 1959/1960 and as a scientist in the period 1962/1963. In 1966 he got his PhD at the same day... |

Pump samples filtered from the sea-water tap have been used to determine microplankton volumes, species diversity and faunal composition in the different water masses sampled by the Amsterdam Mid North Atlantic Plankton Expedition between 55°N 30°W and 24°N 30°W in the period 9 April – 6 May 1980. The presence of a plankton bloom south of 40°N could be demonstrated. Six faunal assemblages are distinguished, viz.: Subarctic, Cold Temperate, Warm Temperate, N. Sargasso Sea, S. Sargasso Sea and a more Tropical assemblage. Some traces of upwelling near 55°, 48° 38° and 30°N could be demonstrated by the presence of benthic Foraminifera in these shallow samples. A list of samples is provided. |

Pelagic species are widely distributed in a horizontal plane and have three-dimensional distributions, since the sea covers about 70% of the surface of the earth, and on average 4 km deep. For most macrozooplankton and micronekton groups there seems to be no great expectations of finding new taxa with the exception of gelatinous groups and of the deep sea, which is a relatively unknown especially in the benthopelagic zone close to the sea-bed. However, we do not know very much about variation, either morphological or genetical, within socalled species in different parts of their range. We think we are dealing with single very broadly distributed species, which, in reality, are species complexes consisting of several more or less cryptic species or... |

From the Mid North Atlantic Ocean 18 species of Nemertinea are reported, two of which are new for the Atlantic, six are new for the North Atlantic. One specimen was the first male to be described of Dinonemertes investigatoris. For Nectonemertes mirabilis a seasonal shift in distribution is found with very shallow (300 m) occurrence in winter and spring north of 41° N. The other species were all collected in hauls below 500 m. |

The vertical distribution patterns of Paraphyllina ransoni Russell, 1956, Periphylla periphylla (Péron & Lesueur, 1809), Atolla parva Russell, 1958, A. vanhoeffeni Russell, 1957, and A. wyvillei Haeckel, 1880 are described. A comparison with other bathypelagic taxa shows that there are various upper limits to be drawn for the bathypelagic area. Four typically different vertical distribution patterns are described. |

The polychaetous worms collected by the Siboga-Expedition (1899-1900) are listed with some annotations. A few specimens – identified by Augener and Pettibone but never published – are added, so that this list gives a complete survey of all Polychaeta collected by the mentioned expedition. The types of 269 nominal species present in the Institute of Taxonomic Zoology (Zoological Museum), Amsterdam are incorporated in this list, for some species lectotypes are desinated. |

A new form is described in the polytypic species Clio pyramidata LINNAEUS, 1767. This new forma excisa was found at 57°31'S 02°56'W and it is related to the forms convexa (BOAS, 1886) and sulcata (PFEFFER, 1879). The shape of the shell of the new form excisa shows a great resemblance to the shape of the shell of these two forms and also a resemblance is present to the shape of the shell of the form martensii (PFEFFER, 1880). This resemblance, however, may indicate a relationship as well as a parallel development. The new forma and the form martensii live in the same area, so that the chemo-physical characteristics of the water may have caused a parallel development. As indicated in a previous paper, the polytypic species Clio pyramidata consists of several... |

In April 1987, seven specimens of a new species of the gymnosomatous pteropod, Pneumoderma heronensis, were collected from surface waters between Heron and Wistari Reefs, southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia (23° 27’S 151° 55’E). Additional specimens were identified from CSIRO plankton collections from the Northwest Shelf, Western Australia (19° 25’S 119° 30’E). This new species is described and illustrated from living specimens. Uniquely, P. heronensis possess 12 lateral buccal arm suckers, arranged alternately in two rows. Morphological comparisons are made with closely related species; P. mediterraneum (Van Beneden, 1838), P. atlanticum atlanticum (Oken, 1815) forma eurycotylum (Meisenheimer, 1905) and P. degraafíi Spoel & Pafort-van Iersel, 1982. |
