The objective of this research is to present a method to bioassay entomopathogenic Bacillus species against sand fly (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) larvae. The vector Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) and some Bacillus strains were used in laboratory to develop this method. Some characteristics of this method are commented and the importance to develop a standard method to test pathogenicity of Bacillus species against phlebotomine larvae is also discussed. |

The effect of temperature on the development of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas, 1851) and Supputius cinctceps (Stål, 1860) was studied in order to adjust equations to predict the development of these predators under 18, 20, 25, 30, 32 and 35º±0.2ºC, relative humidity of 65±10% and photophase of 12 hours. Incubation period of the eggs and duration and viability of nymphal stage were quadratically influenced by temperature while egg viability decreased linearly with increased temperature. The best temperature for egg development was 29ºC for both species and for nymphal development of P. nigrispinus and S. cincticeps they were 29º and 28ºC respectivelly. Nymphal viability was highly affected by extreme temperatures, with optima around 24ºC for S. cincticeps and... |

This paper relates to the first case of Pinus patula defoliation by Fulgurodes sartinaria Guenée, 1857 (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fieldand laboratory studies showed that F. sartinaria is a voraceus species with high biotic potential. Avarage egg laying by female was 180.82 with 22.34±7.36% and 12.91±0.11 days of egg viability and incubation period, respectively. Larval period passed through five instars with a mean of 78.56±1.91 days. Pre-pupal and pupal stages had a mean period of 3.3±0.24 and 20.70±2.05 days, respectively. Males and females were very similar in appearance, with 12.88±0.92 and 12.00± 1.65 days of adult live, respectivelly. It were found an identified egg parasite and Brachymeria sp. pupal parasite. |

A diversified Lepidoptera fauna is found associated with Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. From October 1990 to September 1991 twelve light traps were used in three regions of the Cerrado area with Eucalyptus plantations (Bom Despacho - BD, Três Marias - TM and Montes Claros - MC), in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Twenty three Lepidoptera defoliator species were found in those regions. These species were affected by many factors, specially the plantation stage, the neighboring plant species, the type of brush vegetation and the species of Eucalyptus planted in a specific area. The saniples were not significantly different between regions in species richness (12 to 17 species; p=0.065) or eveness (0.53 to 0.70; p=0.779) in a randomized ANOVA test. Assuming a... |

Longevity and survival of the predator Podisus connexivus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were studied in three alternative preys: T1 - Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera, Bombycidae) catterpilars; T2 - Musca domestica (Diptera, Muscidae) larva and T3 - Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) larva. Longevity and survival were: 22,1±0,6 days and 54,3±5,3%; 25,2±1,3 days and 56,0±4,9% and 22,0±0,8 days and 34,6±8,6%, for treatments T1, T2 and T3, respectively. Comparing to other researches, a lower survival was found. This is probably because a F2 generation from field material, was used. Since the insect was not well adapted to the laboratory conditions this could have led to lower survival. |

Destas, sete são consideradas pragas primarias: Eupseudosoma aberransSchaus, 1905 e Eupseudosoma involutaSepp, 1852 (Arctiidae), "Thyirrteina leucoceraeaRindge, 1961, Glenaspp., e Oxydia veuliaCramer, 1779 (Geometridae); Nystalea nyseusCramer, 1775 (Notodontidae); Sarsina violascensHerrich-Schaeffer, 1856 (Lymantriidae) e seis pragas sencundárias:... |

This work investigated the potential of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Astigmata: Acaridae) to control Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) in the laboratory. L. serricorne is the most destructive insect pest ever found on stored tobacco. The experimental delineation had 33 arenas being each experimental unit with 11 arenas of experiments with eggs, larva of L. serricorne with the density of T. putrescentiae maintained constant, where from 11 of these arenas, eight were for the analysis of predation and three to evaluate the natural mortality of the insect. The highest predation rate was found during the larval stage with, approximately, 54, 68 and 78% mortality of L. serricorne from the fourth until the sixty day of predation. These... |

Reproduction and longevity of Supputius cincticeps (Stål) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed on Zophobas confusa Gebien, Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) or Musca domestica (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae were studied during two generations at 24.7 ± 1.1ºC, 70 ± 10% R.H. and 12 h of photophase. Body weight of newly-emerged adults, oviposition period, number of egg masses, total number of eggs and longevity of S. cincticeps were higher when fed on Z. confusa or T. molitor larvae than on M. domestica larvae. Regardless of diet, S. cincticeps showed better reproduction and longevity in the second generation in laboratory conditions. |
