Interesting records of whale epizoic crustaceans from the Dutch North Sea coast (Cirripedia, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Fransen, C.H.J.M..

Coexistence of surface and cave amphipods in an ecotone environment Naturalis
Luštrik, R.; Turjak, M.; Kralj-Fišer, S.; Fišer, C..
Interspecific interactions between surface and subterranean species may be a key determinant for species distributions. Until now, the existence of competition (including predation) between these groups has not been tested. To assess the coexistence and potential role of interspecific interactions between surface Gammarus fossarum and subterranean Niphargus timavi, and to determine their micro distributions, we conducted a series of field and laboratory observations. We aimed to determine: (1) species substrate preference, (2) whether the presence of G. fossarum influences the habitat choice of N. timavi, and (3) possible predation effects on micro habitat choice of small juveniles. Throughout a small river in SW Slovenia, N. timavi was predominantly found...

Faasse, M.A.; Moorsel, G.W.N.M. van.
New and lesser-known amphipods of hard substrates in the Delta area of the Netherlands (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Gammaridea) The distribution of 27 new and lesser-known amphipod species of sublittoral hard substrates in the Delta area in the southwest of The Netherlands is described. Data from literature on these species are scarce and/or not readily available. They are supplemented with results from recent investigations of mainly sublittoral hard substrates. Of the 22 marine species only nine occur offshore as well as inshore. The others seem to be restricted to inshore man-made coastline protections. This probably reflects the scarcity of hard substrates further offshore. Four invasive species were recorded in the brackish and freshwater part of the Delta...

El Gtari, M.; Bouriga, N.; Medini-Bouaziz, L.; Hamaied, S.; Charfi-Cheikhrouha, F..

The distribution of littoral caprellids (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidea) along the Pacific coast of continental Chile RChHN
THIEL,MARTIN; GUERRA-GARCÍA,JOSÉ M.; LANCELLOTTI,DOMINGO A.; VÁSQUEZ,NELSON.
Many littoral caprellid species have a very ample distribution, some having been reported from all over the world. The cosmopolitan distribution of many littoral caprellid species might be facilitated by the fact that they are often associated with fouling communities on floating objects, which have a high potential of far-range dispersal. This dispersal potential may also have implications for the distribution of caprellids on local and regional scales. Herein we examined the distribution of littoral caprellid species on two spatial scales, local (tens of kilometers) and regional (hundreds of kilometers) along the Pacific coast of continental Chile. On the local scale, we studied the caprellid fauna in different habitats (intertidal boulders, subtidal...

Ecologia populacional dos Amphipoda (Crustacea) dos fitais de Caiobá, Matinhos, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Dubiaski-Silva,Janete; Masunari,Setuko.
Spalial and temporal density distributions of Amphipoda from the phytals of Caiobá are described. Air temperature oscillated from 16ºC (August and May) to 23ºC (March), surface water temperature from 17ºC (August) to 25ºC (March) and the salinity from 29.3‰ (May) to 32.8‰ (August). Two samples of 25cm² (for algae less than 5cm long), 100 cm² (for algae between 5-10cm long) and whole plants (for algae more than 10cm long) were removed with a spatula from the rocky surface at Caiobá Beach, in August/86, November/86, March/87 and May/87. After sorting, the algal substrata were weighted, their adsorption coefficient calculated and the sediment retained among the thallii weighted. The average distance between the branching was measured for all branched algae....

Use of the burrowing amphipod Tiburonella viscana as a tool in marine sediments contamination assessment BABT
Abessa,Denis M.S.; Sousa,Eduinety C.P.M.; Rachid,Bauer R.F.; Mastroti,Ricardo R..
The acute toxicity of sediment samples from Santos Estuary was evaluated by using sediment toxicity tests with the burrowing amphipod Tiburonella viscana. Survival of amphipods acclimated for 2 and 15 days was also analyzed. The sensitivity of this species was evaluated by 48h-exposure tests using potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) as a reference substance. The sediment samples from Gonzaga Beach, Prainha and Paranapuã Beach were not toxic to T. viscana, whereas the samples collected at Santos Channel and São Vicente Bay were toxic. The acclimation period did not affect survival significantly, in spite of the higher mortality within the 15-day acclimated group. The estimated 48-h LC50 to K2Cr2O7 was 6.029 mg/L (3.27-11.12). Toxicity tests using T. viscana were...
