Is curtobacterium wilt biocontrol temperature dependent? Agronomy
Martins, Samuel Julio; Medeiros, Flavio Henrique Vasconcelos; Souza, Ricardo Magela; Vilela, Laize Aparecida Ferreira.
Abiotic stress interferes with plant-microbial interactions, but some microorganisms may buffer this interference. We investigated the interaction between temperature and bacterial wilt (Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens - Cff) biocontrol and the ability of Bacillus subtilis strain ALB629 to colonize bean seedlings, to inhibit pathogen growth and to use different C and N sources. B. subtilis ALB629rif, a mutant selected from the wild population of ALB629, was used to monitor plant colonization at 20°C and 30°C. ALB629rif was detected only in the plant roots (103.22 CFU g-1) at the lower temperature but colonized the roots, stems, and leaves (105.85, 104.48, and 104.01 CFU g-1), respectively, at 30ºC. The area under the disease progress curve...

Moya,Paulina; Pedemonte,Debora; Amengual,Susana; Franco,Mario E. E; Sisterna,Marina N.
"Net blotch" (Drechslera teres) and "Bipolaris spot blotch" (Bipolaris sorokiniana) are foliar diseases of barley. Biological control is currently considered as an efficient alternative to chemical management of these plant diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify 2 isolates of Chaetomium (C2 and C5), endophytics on barley seedlings and to study the in vitro interactions with D. teres and B. sorokiniana, isolated from seeds of the same host. Cultural and morphological characterization of all microorganisms was done. In addition, molecular characterization of Chaetomium spp. was conducted and dual culture tests were carried out to find, by microscopic observations, the effects of the antagonist on the morphology of the pathogens. The results...

Resistance of sugarcane cultivars to Mahanarva fimbriolata Bragantia
Dinardo-Miranda,Leila Luci; Fracasso,Juliano Vilela; Perecin,Dilermando; Miranda,Isabella Dinardo; Réchia,Nádia Mandello; Buzzatto,Driele Francine dos Santos.
ABSTRACT The spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) is one of the most important pest of sugarcane in Brazil. Population control measures are currently restricted to the use of chemical insecticides and the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, in part because very little information exists regarding the resistance of sugarcane cultivars. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance mechanisms of 18 sugarcane cultivars to M. fimbriolata to provide information for growers hoping to manage this pest. Isolated buds of each cultivar were planted in pots and maintained in a greenhouse for approximately three months. The pots were then moved to climate-controlled chambers (26 ± 1 ºC; 70 ± 10% RH; 12 h photoperiod) to carry...

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to select forage grasses with potential resistance to Mahanarva fimbriolata by assessing effects on insect. No-choice assays were conducted with 12 genotypes and laboratory-reared insects. The following parameters were assessed: mortality and duration of the nymphal stage; adult weight and longevity; pre-oviposition period; number of eggs/female; viability and duration of the embryonic period. As main result it was verified that the mortality of nymphs reared on Panicum maximum cv. Paredão is almost complete and that this forage grass may be characterized as resistant to this insect by antibiosis. Further, the grasses can be divided into three groups following a cluster analysis: P. maximum cv. Aries, Setaria sphacelata...

Portes,Ciro da Silva; Oliveira,Andriélen Virke de; Simer,Patrícia; Lunkes,Alessandra Machado; Coelho,Alexandre Rodrigo.
This work evaluated the antagonism of killer positive yeast strains (isolated from 11 samples of different frozen fruit pulps) against the strains of Penicillium expansum and Aspergillus ochraceus. Of the total 41 killer yeasts tested in YM agar, 19 showed antibiosis against P. expansum and A. ochraceus, with inhibition zone ranging from 10 to 18 mm and 10 to 19 mm, respectively. In the following step, the extracellular activity of Kluyveromyces sp. FP4(13) was tested performing the assay in YM broth. The antifungal activity of Kluyveromyces sp. FP4(13) cell-free culture supernatant (25ºC/96 h) was more effective against the conidia germination, showing inhibition rates of 93.33 and 86.44% for P. expansum and A. ochraceus, respectively. The micelial growth...

Bacterial selection for biological control of plant disease: criterion determination and validation BJM
Mota,Monalize Salete; Gomes,Cesar Bauer; Souza Júnior,Ismail Teodoro; Moura,Andréa Bittencourt.
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the biocontrol potential of bacteria isolated from different plant species and soils. The production of compounds related to phytopathogen biocontrol and/or promotion of plant growth in bacterial isolates was evaluated by measuring the production of antimicrobial compounds (ammonia and antibiosis) and hydrolytic enzymes (amylases, lipases, proteases, and chitinases) and phosphate solubilization. Of the 1219 bacterial isolates, 92% produced one or more of the eight compounds evaluated, but only 1% of the isolates produced all the compounds. Proteolytic activity was most frequently observed among the bacterial isolates. Among the compounds which often determine the success of biocontrol, 43% produced compounds which...

Evaluation of Resistance of Cucumber Cultivars to the Vegetable Leafminer (Liriomyza sativae Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in Greenhouse Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Basij,Moslem; Askarianzaeh,Alireza; Asgari,Shahriyar; Moharramipou,Saeid; Rafezi,Ramin.
The leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard, is distributed around the world and is an important pest of vegetables and ornamentals. Given the resistance potential of the leafminer to current insecticides, the use of resistant plant cultivars and parasitoids could be effective integrated pest management (IPM) strategies against it. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a preferred host for this insect. Seventeen cultivars of cucumber have been evaluated to study resistance mechanisms to L. sativae. All cucumber cultivars were evaluated in screening tests in greenhouse with indices such as the number of leafminer stings, the number of larval mines, the proportion of larval mines to leafminer stings, and the rate of injury. Significant differences (p < 0.01)...

Strawberry genotypes with resistance to Tetranychus urticae mediated by leaf trichomes Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Resende,Juliano Tadeu Vilela de; Lima Filho,Renato Barros de; Ribeiro,Luana Karolline; Corrêa,Jéssica Vanessa Wosniak; Maciel,Cleber Daniel de Goes; Youssef,Khamis.
ABSTRACT The two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) is the main pest encountered in strawberry cultivation in protected environments, causing damage and increasing the cost of production associated with chemical control. Breeding programs are essential for obtaining new cultivars that are more tolerant to two-spotted spider mites. The objective was to evaluate whether the leaf trichomes mediatethe resistance of intraspecific strawberry hybrids to two-spotted spider mites. Preselected hybrids were subjected to infestation by two-spotted spider mites and evaluated via the no-choice assay and the travel test. Resistance was correlated with the density of trichomes, both glandular and non-glandular, present on the surface of the leaflets of strawberry...
