Identification key to the Gerridae (Insecta: Heteroptera: Gerromorpha) from the Amazon River floodplain, Brazil, with new records for the Brazilian Amazon Rev. Bras. Zool.
Moreira,Felipe F. F.; P. Alecrim,Viviani; Ribeiro,José R. I.; Nessimian,Jorge L..
Eighteen species from seven genera are recorded from the Amazon River floodplain, Brazil. An identification key, diagnoses, drawings, and taxonomic and biological notes are given for these species. The main features used in the identification key and diagnoses are: body and leg segments proportions, coloration patterns, presence and distribution of setae, and modifications of the apical abdominal segments and external genitalia of the male. Based on material collected in the floodplain streams and lakes, Cylindrostethus bassleri Drake, 1952 is recorded for the first time from Brazil, and new municipality records are presented for Brachymetra lata Shaw, 1933, B. shawi Hungerford & Matsuda, 1957, C. erythropus (Herrich-Schäffer, 1850), C. linearis...

Macroinvertebrates associated with bryophyta in a first-order Atlantic Forest stream Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rosa,Beatriz F. J. V.; Silva,Marcos V. D. da; Oliveira,Vívian C. de; Martins,Renato T.; Alves,Roberto da G..
This study describes the composition and structure of the benthic community associated with bryophytes in a first-order stream, located in a biological reserve of the Atlantic Forest, during two seasons. During three months of the dry season of 2007 and three months of the rainy season of 2008, samples of bryophytes attached to stones were collected randomly, along a 100 m stream reach. The structure of the community was analyzed through the mean density of individuals, Shannon's diversity index, Pielou's evenness, family richness, dominance index, and the percentage of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (% EPT). Chironomidae larvae were dominant in the two periods of study, followed by Ceratopogonidae in the rainy season, and Naididae in the dry...

Description of the immature stages of Leptonema tridens (Insecta: Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) from southeastern Brazil with notes on its biology Rev. Bras. Zool.
Nessimian,Jorge Luiz; Dumas,Leandro Lourenço.
The larva and pupa of Leptonema tridens Mosely, 1933 are described and illustrated. Larvae of L. tridens can be distinguished from other described larvae of Leptonema Guérin, 1843 mainly by the rodlike setae of the labrum and the forecoxa lacking processes, bearing only a row of spiniform setae on its inner surface. The specimens were collected in different localities of the Mantiqueira mountain range, Itatiaia massif, states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Larvae build typical hydropsychid shelters and are found in rapids, attached to rocky substrates. Gut content analysis revealed that larvae are omnivorous-filterers.

Estimation of dry mass of caddisflies Phylloicus elektoros (Trichoptera: Calamoceratidae) in a Central Amazon stream Rev. Bras. Zool.
Martins,Renato T.; Melo,Adriano S.; Gonçalves Jr,José F.; Hamada,Neusa.
Aquatic invertebrate biomass estimations are often important in ecological and biological studies. Biomass may be determined by regression models between body and case dimensions and dry mass. Using linear, exponential and power regressions we analyzed the relationship between body and case dimensions and the biomass of Phylloicus elektoros Prather, 2003. Furthermore, we used cross-validation to evaluate the predictions of our models and of the models developed for Phylloicus sp. from southeastern Brazil. We measured four body dimensions (head capsule width, interocular distance, body and pronotum length) of 152 larvae and two case dimensions (width and length) of 45 cases. Case width provided better fit with biomass than case length in all model classes....

Explaining dissimilarities in macroinvertebrate assemblages among stream sites using environmental variables Rev. Bras. Zool.
Melo,Adriano S..
The relationship between community structure and environmental factors usually varies according to ecosystem type, group of organisms, and spatial scale. In this study I assessed whether dissimilarities among assemblages of stream macroinvertebrates are related to differences in environmental variables. Data consisted of macroinvertebrate samples of 10 stream sites during the dry season. Seven environmental variables were assessed. The relationship among dissimilarities in assemblage structure and dissimilarities in environmental variables was assessed using the BioEnv approach. Conductivity and measures related to stream size were the most important variables. However, part of the correlation with conductivity was due to the high value observed in a...

Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera) associated with stones in a first-order Atlantic Forest stream RChHN
ROSA,BEATRIZ F. J. V; VASQUES,MONIQUE; ALVES,ROBERTO G.
Stones are stable substrates in streams, usually sheltering high richness and abundance of invertebrates. To investigate the structure of the Chironomidae assemblages associated with stones in a first-order stream located in an Atlantic Forest reserve in two periods of the year, stones with diameters from 10 cm to 25 cm were collected along a stretch of 100 m in riffle areas, during three months in the dry season and three months in the rainy season. The structure of the community was analyzed for each period through calculation of observed richness, Shannon's diversity (H'), and Pielou's evenness. The ordination of the samples from the dry and rainy seasons was evaluated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and the presence of indicator species in...

First records of four species of the genus Americabaetis (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) for Argentina Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Bardavid,Sofía; Nieto,Carolina.
The family Baetidae is the most diverse family into the Order Ephemeroptera and it has an almost cosmopolitan distribution. The genus Americabaetis Kluge was described in 1992 and actually it has 19 known species with a clearly Neotropical distribution. Although this genus is very common in lotic aquatic systems, it has been poorly studied in Argentina. Herein, we report four species for this country originally described from Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay: A. labiosus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, A. longetron Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, A. mecistognathus Salles & Raimundi, A. titthion Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty.

Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera assemblages in two Atlantic Rainforest streams, Southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Crisci-Bispo,Vera L.; Bispo,Pitágoras C.; Froehlich,Claudio G..
Assemblages of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) of rocky substrates were studied in two streams of the Intervales State Park. Monthly collections with a Surber sampler (10 random sampling units, 1m²) were carried out from September 1999 to September 2000 and quarterly from December 2000 to September 2001 in the Bocaina and Água Comprida Streams. The EPT fauna in the Bocaina Stream was more diversified and more abundant than in the Água Comprida Stream. The EPT fauna was quite different in the two streams both in composition as in functional aspects. The results of this study indicate that there was not a clear seasonal pattern in the temporal variation of density.

Diversity and structure of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (Insecta) assemblages from riffles in mountain streams of Central Brazil Zoologia
Bispo,Pitágoras C.; Oliveira,Leandro G..
The diversity and structure of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) assemblages in streams of Central Brazil (Serra dos Pireneus, Pirenópolis, State of Goiás) was investigated. Abundance data of EPT were obtained in Central-West Brazilian streams in order to evaluate the effect of spatial variability, including the effect of size of the stream and anthropic action, and seasonality (dry and rainy seasons) on faunal diversity and structure. The immatures were collected with circular sieves (0. 5 mm mesh) during one hour at five collection stations over 14 months. From a spatial point of view, the data showed that anthropic action determined the patterns of diversity whereas the size of streams (1st and 3rd-4th orders) determined the faunistic...

Relationships among some abiotic factors (temperature, velocity, flow, conductivity, oxy-reduction potential and pH) and the seazonal density of benthic insects (immature forms) of the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera at the Parque Ecológico de Goiânia, Goiás are studied. An area of 1m² was sampled and abiotic factors were recorded in 4 sites from August/1994 to July/1995. The faunistic composition was 75% Ephemeroptera, 1% Plecoptera and 24% Trichoptera. The data suggest the water velocity and flow as the main factors that determined the aquatic insects abundance.

Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera assemblages in litter in a mountain stream of the Atlantic Rainforest from Southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Crisci-Bispo,Vera L.; Bispo,Pitágoras C.; Froehlich,Claudio G..
The study of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera associated with litter in southeastern Brazil streams aimed to answer the following questions: 1) Does richness and composition of EPT fauna differ between riffle and pool mesohabitats despite being associated to the same substratum, litter? 2) Does the similarity of the EPT fauna between both mesohabitats change with time? 3) Does the EPT functional feeding structure differ between both mesohabitats (riffles-pools)? In order to answer these questions, monthly collections, from November 1999 to June 2000, were done in Ribeirão (Stream) Bocaina with a D-net (10 litter patches in riffles and 10 in pools). The EPT fauna at Ribeirão Bocaina was more diversified and more abundant in the litter in riffles...
