This paper develops a critical overview of the various problems and uncertainties faced in tuna stock assessment, management and conservation. This presentation is based on Atlantic tunas, but also on various tuna stocks worldwide. Tuna jisheries management is characterized by major uncertainties in the stock assessment; since these stock assessments are always done only on jishery data which are often biased. Fortunately most tuna stocks are showing a strong resistance to overfishing. These major characteristics of tuna stocks and jisheries, and the bias in the scientific analysis, are presented and discussed. As a result, many of the reference point recommended for the precautionary approach applied to jisheries are often quite inappropriate for tuna... |

This research was conducted to inventory and assess the flora of Mt Hamiguitan. Field reconnaissance and transect walk showed four vegetation types, namely: dipterocarp, montane, typical mossy and mossy-pygmy forests. Inventory of plants showed a total of 878 species, 342 genera and 136 families. Of these, 698 were angiosperms, 25 gymnosperms, 41 ferns and 14 fern allies. Assessment of conservation status revealed 163 endemic, 34 threatened, 33 rare and 204 economically important species. Noteworthy findings include 8 species as new record in Mindanao and one species as new record in the Philippines. Density of threatened species is highest in the dipterocarp forest and decreases at higher elevation. Species richness was highest in the montane forest and... |

The availability of online computerized assessments is increasing, especially for economics principles courses. A severe limitation of online assessments is the possibility of cheating. Scant information is available on student preferences, behavior, and learning that is accomplished when online assessments are completed either independently or in team settings. This study investigates the performance of students in a macro-economics principles course that recently adopted online assessment with an "open book, open friend" policy. Several strategies were developed that encouraged students to learn the material independently. Data were collected throughout the semester to quantify the number of students who actually did have a friend assist them... |

Student satisfaction with, and performance in, a first-offer online agrisales course was compared with that of students enrolled in a simultaneously-taught classroom course. Online and classroom students were equally satisfied with the course and the instructor using most measures, and student overall performance did not differ. However, online students tended to do better on exams while classroom students demonstrated a greater ability to apply course concepts to a practical setting. Changes were made in the online course to improve student understanding of and ability to apply course concepts. Specifically, online student exams were no longer open-note / open-book and were proctored. On-campus online students also participated in their final sales... |

Student satisfaction with and performance in an online agrisales course is compared with that of students enrolled in a simultaneously-taught classroom course. Assessment tools are developed for both sections. Online and classroom students were equally satisfied with the course and the instructor using most measures, but had different motives for course enrollment. Overall student performance did not differ. However, online students tended to do better on exams and homework assignments while classroom students demonstrated a greater ability to apply course concepts to a practical setting. Results suggest instructors be well-prepared to handle unique learner situations prior to marketing an online course and work to ensure students are motivated to... |

Fruit flies are recognised as one of the major pests of fruit and vegetable crops worldwide. Potential benefits from fruit fly research include biosecurity benefits from better quarantine surveillance that reduces the costs of an incursion by a damaging exotic pest fruit fly; market access benefits by enabling new fruit exports; and field control benefits from better crop management. The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR)’s investment in fruitfly research goes back some 25 years to an initial project in Malaysia. Since that time, ACIAR’s continued investment has funded a total of 18 projects ranging across several areas of fruit-fly research, and covering Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Fiji Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Cook... |

Ontologies are at the heart of the semantic web. They define the concepts and relationships that make global interoperability possible. However, as these ontologies grow in size they become more and more difficult to create, use, understand, maintain, transform and classify. As ontologies become common in more applications and as those applications become larger and longer-lived, it is becoming increasingly common for ontologies to be developed in different area of public sector of economics. Ontologies present special challenges to the problem of conceptual modeling. This paper describes the process of the implementation of a subontology of forecasting and evaluations for business analysis domain in order to develop an easy and correct way to find the... |

The benefits that students gain from designing and implementing their own independent undergraduate research projects is often presented as a valuable step in their academic career, and a stepping stone to graduate school success. However, it is not clear what benefits students receive when working as undergraduate research assistants on faculty research projects where they, the students, have little or no input into the project or its design. This paper reports on a survey of undergraduate students who participated as wage laborers on two separate faculty-directed research projects. The results of the study suggest that students gain valuable knowledge and skills that serve as constructive preparation for work, personal lives and graduate school careers;... |

This report summarizes the results of the North Dakota Land Valuation Model. This model is used annually to estimate average land values by county, based on the value of production produced on that land. The county land values developed from this procedure form the basis for the 2001 valuation of agricultural land for assessment of real estate taxes. The average all land value from this analysis is multiplied by the total acres of agricultural land on the county abstract to determine each county's total agricultural land value. The State Board of Equalization compares this value with the total value assessed to agricultural property in each county. Each county is required by state statute to assess a total value of agricultural property within 5 percent of... |

The International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT) is a CGIAR centre with a long tradition of impact assessment (IA). Until recently, such work had focused on the rates of adoption of improved germplasm and returns on investment. Limited attention was directed at measuring impacts in terms of livelihood security or poverty reduction. In 2005, therefore, CIMMYT's Impacts Targeting and Assessment Unit (ITAU) began to develop and promote more wide-ranging types of IA. In order to enhance its IA culture and institutionalize IA within the Center, ITAU organized a series of workshops that brought together different players amongst CIMMYT's staff and partners. Coupled with follow-up activities, these have made it possible for social and biophysical... |
