Selection of phytotoxin producing rhizobacteria Anais da ABC (AABC)
Carvalho,Daniel D.C.; Oliveira,Denilson F.; Campos,Vicente P.; Pasqual,Moacir.
In order to select phytotoxin producing rhizobacteria to control weed plants, twenty five bacterial strains previously isolated from the rhizospheres of various plants were grown in a liquid medium and, after cell removal by centrifugation, the liquid phases were freeze-dried and the products were extracted with ethyl acetate/methanol. The extracts were concentrated to dryness under vacuum and dissolved in water and sucrose solution to be submitted to in vitro assays of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seed germination and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) coleoptile growth. Although most samples affected coleoptile growth, only those from four strains reduced lettuce seed germination. Two strains of Bacillus cereus, one strain of B. pumilus and one of...

Antagonism of Bacillus spp. against Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris BABT
Monteiro,Leila; Mariano,Rosa de Lima Ramos; Souto-Maior,Ana Maria.
The antagonism of eight Bacillus isolates was investigated against nine strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (causal agent of crucifers black rot) to assess the role of lipopeptides in this process. Antimicrobial and hemolytic (surfactant) activity tests were performed in vitro using agar diffusion methods. Antibiosis and hemolysis were positive for four Bacillus isolates against all X. campestris pv. campestris strains. The correlation observed between antimicrobial and hemolytic activities indicated that lipopeptides were involved in the antibiosis mechanism of the studied antagonists. Fermentation studies were carried out with the isolates that showed highest antimicrobial and hemolytic activities, to follow up growth and production of...

Gorlach-Lira,Krystyna; Pedroza,Maria Lourdes Vieira; Burdziej-Pokojska,Aleksandra; Rozycki,Henryk; Dahm,Hanna.
Proteolytic activity and cell biomass of thermophilic Bacillus sp. strain were evaluated at various levels of initial pH and temperature by applying response surface methodology. The mineral medium containing yeast extract (0.01%) and starch (1%) was used throughout the experiment. The results of statistical analysis revealed the polynomial model with high coefficient of determination (R² = 0.8) for the biomass and total proteolytic activity of the strain studied. This model showed a satisfactory adjustment of the statistic model with the experimental data. The p values showed that the temperature and pH had significant effect on biomass and proteolytic activity (P<0.05) of strain tested. The highest proteolytic activity (2.333 U/ml/h) of the Bacillus...

Feather degradation by strains of Bacillus isolated from decomposing feathers BJM
Swetlana,Nagal; Jain,P. C..
Feather waste is generated in large amounts as a by-product of commercial poultry processing. This residue is almost pure keratin, which is not easily degradable by common proteolytic enzymes. Eight strains of Bacillus, isolated from decomposing feathers were tested for the hydrolysis of feather wastes in the laboratory. Among these strains, Bacillus cereus KB043 was the best feather degrading organism when grown on basal medium containing 1% hen feather as sole source of carbon and nitrogen. It caused 78.16 ± 0.4 % degradation with a significant release of soluble protein (1206.15 ± 14.7 µg mL-1) and cysteine (20.63 ± 0.4 µg mL-1) in the cultivation fluid. The strain also showed the highest level of keratinase activity (39.10 ± 0.4 U mL-1). These data...

Characterization of Bacillus isolates of potato rhizosphere from andean soils of Peru and their potential PGPR characteristics BJM
Calvo,Pamela; Ormeño-Orrillo,Ernesto; Martínez-Romero,Esperanza; Zúñiga,Doris.
Bacillus spp. are well known rhizosphere residents of many crops and usually show plant growth promoting (PGP) activities that include biocontrol capacity against some phytopatogenic fungi. Potato crops in the Andean Highlands of Peru face many nutritional and phytophatogenic problems that have a significant impact on production. In this context is important to investigate the natural presence of these microorganisms in the potato rhizosphere and propose a selective screening to find promising PGP strains. In this study, sixty three Bacillus strains isolated from the rhizosphere of native potato varieties growing in the Andean highlands of Peru were screened for in vitro antagonism against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium solani. A high prevalence (68%) of...
