| In all marine benthic environments, organism replacement depends on recruitment limitation, i.e. the impact of both pre- and post-settlement events on the success of recruitment. The relative contribution of pre- versus post-settlement processes in shaping adult populations has been extensively studied. Most analyses concluded that recruitment limitation is a strong determinant of adults' density. The magnitude of its limitation depends on context, varies with species, and can be strongly modified by all the events preceding and following recruitment itself. | In the summer of 2004, a video survey was carried out in the northern part of the central mud bank (Grande Vasiere) of the Bay of Biscay to study the small scale relationship between the dominant crustacean megafauna Nephrops norvegicus, Munida rugosa and Goneplax rhomboides and juvenile hake (Merluccius merluccius). Using a towed body, high-resolution videos were recorded in six sampling sites. Statistical modelling using generalised additive models (GAM) revealed variations in activity patterns for two species. More N. norvegicus were observed outside their burrows at dawn and somewhat at dusk (no observations during night) while G. rhomboides was less observed in the morning. | The Abra alba community from the Gravelines area has been studied since 1976. During this period, sudden and unpredictable variations of the species composition have been observed. These important changes affect a limited number of species without changing the bionomical structure of the community. The species in question are found to be characteristic of this community, and are the more abundant ones. Multivariate statistical methods were used to study quantitative data on the benthic population collected from 1978 to 1992. This analysis was performed in association with air temperature data.
