Soluble fractalkine in the plasma of fibromyalgia patients Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARCIA,JUAN J.; ORTEGA,EDUARDO.
Fibromyalgia is a form of non-articular rheumatism in which inflammatory cytokines seem to be involved. However, there is still no analytical specific diagnostic criterion for this disease. The aim was to examine a possible role of fractalkine as a biomarker in fibromyalgia. Plasma levels of soluble fractalkine were compared between women diagnosed with fibromyalgia (n=17) and healthy women (n=10) as controls. Fractalkine released by monocytes was also evaluated. Fibromyalgia patients showed lower plasma fractalkine than healthy women. Since most inflammatory pathologies show elevated plasma levels of soluble fractalkine, the results may contribute towards a differential diagnosis for fibromyalgia.

Cytochrome P450 detection in liver of the catfish Ancistrus multispinis (Osteichthyes, Loricariidae) BABT
Klemz,Claudio; Salvo,Ligia Maria; Bastos Neto,Jayme da Cunha; Bainy,Afonso Celso Dias; Assis,Helena Cristina da Silva de.
Sensitive biological responses to environmental contaminants are useful as early warning signals to predict the damages by long-term exposure. Protocols standardization to quantify biochemical parameters in different fish species is required to validate its use as biomarkers. Comparative studies from different fish species and its interpretation are a challenge for the validation of its use as general biomarkers, representative of environmental impact. In this study, the protocol for liver cytochrome P450 (CYP) analysis from the native Brazilian fish Ancistrus multispinis was established. The microsome contamination by hemoglobin during the analysis of CYP in liver was detected, leading to misinterpretation of the results. The spectrophotometric method for...

Sumrin,Aleena; Moazzam,Shumaila; Khan,Aleena Ahmad; Ramzan,Irsa; Batool,Zunaira; Kaleem,Sana; Ali,Moazzam; Bashir,Hamid; Bilal,Muhammad.
ABSTRACT Rapid advances in medicine and biotechnology resulted in the development of non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers enabling convenient and accurate detection. Exosomes has recently emerged as non-invasive biomarker for a number of diseases including cancer. Exosomes are the small endosome originated membranous vesicles secreted in a number of biological fluids such as serum, saliva, urine, ascites, cerebrospinal fluid, etc. Exosomes contain microRNA proteins and mRNA which can be used as disease specific biomarkers. Here we reviewed recent advancement in the field of exosomes as diagnostic biomarker for cancer along with a brief overview of their biogenesis, function and isolation.

Biochemical biomarkers of exposure to deltamethrin in freshwater fish, Ancistrus multispinis BABT
Assis,Helena Cristina da Silva de; Nicareta,Lilian; Salvo,Ligia Maria; Klemz,Claudio; Truppel,Jessé Henrique; Calegari,Rossana.
This study aimed to determine the effect of sublethal doses of deltamethrin, using biochemical biomarkers as activities of cholinesterase (ChE), ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and the Na+K+- ATPase and levels of total cytochrome P450 (CYP450). Fishes received sublethal doses of deltamethrin and were sacrificed after 96 h of exposure. Samples of gills, heart, brain, liver and muscle were collected for enzymatic analyses. Deltamethrin inhibited the activity of the gills and heart Na+ K+-ATPase, induced the liver total CYP450, as well as the liver EROD activity. The activity of the ChE was not inhibited by deltamethrin. Deltamethrin altered the hepatic metabolism and the normal ionic flux in Ancistrus multispinis.

Immune responses to Leptospira infection: roles as biomarkers for disease severity BJID
Chirathaworn,Chintana; Kongpan,Sutthikarn.
Various leptospiral components have been identified and shown to be involved in tissue destruction. In addition, immune responses to leptospires have been implicated in target organ damages in severe leptospirosis cases. Several inflammatory mediators were shown to be higher in susceptible animals than in resistant hosts. Moreover, cytokines/chemokines and serum proteins induced following Leptospira infection were suggested to be biomarkers for disease severity in human leptospirosis. This review focuses on the role of immune responses in the severity of leptospirosis. Studies in both animal models and humans are discussed.

LncRNA SNHG12 promotes cell growth and inhibits cell apoptosis in colorectal cancer cells BJMBR
Wang,J.Z.; Xu,C.L.; Wu,H.; Shen,S.J..
Several long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) might be correlated with the prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) and serve as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker. However, the exact expression pattern of small nucleolar RNA host gene 12 (SNHG12) in colorectal cancer and its clinical significance remains unclear. The level of SNHG12 was detected by qRT-PCR in CRC tissues and CRC cells. MTT assay and colony formation assay were performed to examine the cell proliferation of CRC cells transfected with pcDNA-SNHG12 or si-SNHG12. Flow cytometry technology was used to detect cell cycle and cell apoptosis of CRC cells transfected with pcDNA-SNHG12 or si-SNHG12. The protein level of cell cycle progression-related molecules, including cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK4, CDK6),...

Decreased expression of chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein 9 is a novel independent prognostic biomarker for colorectal cancer BJMBR
Xu,Li; Peng,Hui; Huang,Xiao-Xu; Xia,Ya-Bin; Hu,Kai-Feng; Zhang,Zheng-Ming.
Previous studies suggested that chromodomain helicase DNA-binding proteins (CHDs), including CHD 1–8, were associated with several human diseases and cancers including lymphoma, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, etc. To date, little research on CHD 9 in human cancers has been reported. In this study, we assessed the prognostic value of CHD 9 in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). We screened for CHD 9 expression using immunohistochemical analysis in 87 surgical CRC specimens and found that the expression was upregulated in 81.5% of the cases, while 7.4% were decreased; in the remaining 11.1% of the cases, levels were not altered. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients with high CHD 9 expression had better prognosis than those with low...

Prevalence of ERG expression and PTEN loss in a Brazilian prostate cancer cohort BJMBR
Morais,C.E.; Gurgel,D.C.; Teixeira,A.C.; Mattos,T.V. Arruda; Silva,A.V. Alves da; Tavora,F..
PTEN is the most commonly inactivated tumor suppressor gene in primary prostate cancer (PCa) and its loss is associated with poor clinical outcomes. ERG rearrangement is a genomic alteration frequently found in PCa and its prognostic significance has yielded mixed results. Although the association of PTEN and ERG biomarkers has potential impact on clinical outcomes, studies examining the two genes simultaneously are scarce in Brazilian populations. In this study, we retrospectively examined the relationship between ERG expression and PTEN loss in 119 surgically treated prostate cancer patients from Northeastern Brazil through immunohistochemical analysis. ERG expression was found in 41.0% (48/117) of cases and the loss of PTEN detected in 38.1% (40/105) of...

Global microRNA profiles and signaling pathways in the development of cardiac hypertrophy BJMBR
Feng,H.J.; Ouyang,W.; Liu,J.H.; Sun,Y.G.; Hu,R.; Huang,L.H.; Xian,J.L.; Jing,C.F.; Zhou,M.J..
Hypertrophy is a major predictor of progressive heart disease and has an adverse prognosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) that accumulate during the course of cardiac hypertrophy may participate in the process. However, the nature of any interaction between a hypertrophy-specific signaling pathway and aberrant expression of miRNAs remains unclear. In this study, Spague Dawley male rats were treated with transverse aortic constriction (TAC) surgery to mimic pathological hypertrophy. Hearts were isolated from TAC and sham operated rats (n=5 for each group at 5, 10, 15, and 20 days after surgery) for miRNA microarray assay. The miRNAs dysexpressed during hypertrophy were further analyzed using a combination of bioinformatics algorithms in order to predict possible...

Bioinformatics analysis of biomarkers and transcriptional factor motifs in Down syndrome BJMBR
Kong,X.D.; Liu,N.; Xu,X.J..
In this study, biomarkers and transcriptional factor motifs were identified in order to investigate the etiology and phenotypic severity of Down syndrome. GSE 1281, GSE 1611, and GSE 5390 were downloaded from the gene expression ominibus (GEO). A robust multiarray analysis (RMA) algorithm was applied to detect differentially expressed genes (DEGs). In order to screen for biological pathways and to interrogate the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway database, the database for annotation, visualization, and integrated discovery (DAVID) was used to carry out a gene ontology (GO) function enrichment for DEGs. Finally, a transcriptional regulatory network was constructed, and a hypergeometric distribution test was applied to select for...

Urinary semaphorin 3A as an early biomarker to predict contrast-induced acute kidney injury in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention BJMBR
Ning,Li; Li,Zhiguo; Wei,Dianjun; Chen,Haiyan; Yang,Chao; Wu,Dawei; Wang,Yanchun; Zhang,Jingwei.
Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a serious complication of diagnostic coronary angiograph and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, the exact pathophysiological mechanisms underlying CI-AKI development are largely unknown. The present study examined whether urinary semaphorin 3A levels predict the development of CI-AKI in patients undergoing PCI. This study enrolled 168 patients with stable angina undergoing elective PCI. Serial urine samples, obtained at baseline and 2, 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h post-PCI were analyzed by semaphorin 3A and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) ELISA kit. AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine beyond 50% according to the RIFLE classification system. Receiver operator...

MicroRNAs in veterinary cardiology Ciência Rural
Wolf,Marcela; Muehlbauer,Eloísa; Sousa,Marlos Gonçalves.
ABSTRACT: The use of biomarkers is an important recent development in veterinary medicine. Biomarkers allow non-invasive quantification of substances with diagnostic and prognostic potential in several diseases. The microRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression and are expressed in different forms in many diseases. Reduced or over-expression of microRNAs showed to be part of the pathogenesis of some heart diseases in humans and animals. Diagnostic and therapeutic value of measuring microRNAs in veterinary cardiology is increased because abnormal expression can be managed by the use of antagonists (in the case of overexpression) and mimicking (in the case of underexpression). Thus, this literature review aimed to compile scientific...
