Results of the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition to Ambon (1990). Part 8. Swimming crabs of Ambon (Crustacea: Decapoda: Portunidae) Naturalis
Spiridonov, V.A..
During the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition (RBE) to Ambon, 33 species of swimming crabs were collected in the littoral and upper sublittoral zone by hand on tidal flats, using SCUBA, and using a Holthuis dredge. Lissocarcinus arkati, L. laevis, Charybdis (C.) hellerii, C. (C.) orientalis, C. (C.) variegata, Portunus hastatoides, P. iranjae, P. longispinosus, P. stephensoni, T. chaptalii, T. cooperi, T. stephensoni are recorded at Ambon and in the Moluccas for the first time. The Portunus tenuipes complex is partly revised and P. rugosus sensu Stephenson (1961) is considered a synonym of P. tenuipes De Haan, 1835. A new species, P. pseudotenuipes occurring at Ambon, in the Philippines and off South-East Asia is described. The Ambon fauna includes 55...

A new family of brachyuran (Crustacea: Decapoda: Goneplacoidea) from the Eocene of Java, Indonesia Naturalis
Schweitzer, C.E.; Feldmann, R.M.; Bonadio, C..
A new family, Martinocarcinidae, must accommodate the monotypic genus Martinocarcinus Böhm, 1922. The genus displays a unique combination of dorsal, sternal and abdominal characters justifying placement in a new family. The Martinocarcinidae joins several other now extinct Eocene families that flourished at that time, supporting the long-held view that the Eocene was a time of radiation within the Brachyura.

New Late Cretaceous and Early Cenozoic decapod crustaceans from California, USA: implications for the origination of taxa in the eastern North Pacific Naturalis
Nyborg, Torrey G.; Vega, Francisco J.; Filkorn, Harry F..
Recent revision of Cretaceous and Paleocene brachyurans in the collections of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has revealed the presence of several new species. Based upon these fossils and their ages, it is evident that they played a pivotal role in the origination and subsequent dispersal of decapod crustaceans within the eastern North Pacific.

Progress on the fossil Xanthoidea MacLeay, 1838 (Decapoda, Brachyura) Naturalis
Schweitzer, Carrie E..
Identification and utilization of proxy characters in extant families has been accomplished with success for fossil members of the Calappidae, Hepatidae, Necrocarcinidae, Matutidae, and Hexapodidae. The fossil and extant Raninidae have been revised using primarily hard-part morphology preserved in the fossil record although formal designation of “proxy characters” has not occurred. Hard-part characters can also be used to differentiate among members of the Atelecyclidae and the Cheiragonidae. Thus, the method of using proxy characters is demonstrably suitable for application to a difficult group like the Xanthoidea.

A new classification of the Xanthoidea sensu lato (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) based on phylogenetic analysis and traditional systematics and evaluation of all fossil Xanthoidea sensu lato Naturalis
Karasawa, H.; Schweitzer, C.E..
A phylogenetic analysis was conducted including representatives from all recognized extant and extinct families of the Xanthoidea sensu lato, resulting in one new family, Hypothalassiidae. Four xanthoid families are elevated to superfamily status, resulting in Carpilioidea, Pilumnoidoidea, Eriphioidea, Progeryonoidea, and Goneplacoidea, and numerous subfamilies are elevated to family status. The Mathildellidae is moved from the Goneplacidae to the Portunoidea. Diagnoses for all superfamilies and families discussed herein are provided, embracing characters typically used by biologists as well as readily fossilized features of the dorsal carapace, sternum, abdomen, and chelipeds. All genera known from the fossil record at one time referred to the Xanthidae...

[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: Decapod crustacean ‘odds and ends’ from the Maastrichtian type area (southeast Netherlands, northeast Belgium) Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Fraaije, R.H.B.; Bakel, B.W.M. van.
Strata of latest Cretaceous (late Maastrichtian) and earliest Paleogene (early Paleocene) age in the (extended) type area of the Maastrichtian Stage are comparatively rich in decapod crustaceans. Particularly common are chelae of the callianassoid Mesostylus faujasi (Desmarest, 1822), followed by carapaces of various species of necrocarcinid and raninid, plus the ?longusorbiid Binkhorstia ubaghsii (van Binkhorst, 1857) and chelae of paguroids; other taxa are much rarer. Recently collected material, all stratigraphically well constrained, has enabled us to reinterpret, and reassign, a number of species. Specimens contained in old museum collections have proved indispensable in that respect. Undescribed taxa have also come to light; here a new dromioid,...

The Dakoticancridae (Decapoda, Brachyura) from the Late Cretaceous of North America and Mexico Naturalis
Bishop, G.A.; Feldmann, R.M.; Vega, F..
The podotrematous crab family Dakoticancridae includes four genera: Dakoticancer Rathbun, Tetracarcinus Weller, Avitelmessus Rathbun, and Seorsus Bishop, all known solely from the Late Cretaceous of North America. Lathelicocarcinus Bishop, originally referred to the family, must be reassigned. Fine details of anatomy, preserved on specimens of D. overanus Rathbun and A. grapsoideus Rathbun, permit description of genital openings and interpretation of functional morphology of appendages. Although one species, D. australis Rathbun, has been found associated with burrow structures, all were probably vagrant epifaunal animals on fine- to medium-grained siliciclastic substrata. Food was probably obtained by generalized low-level predation and scavenging....
