La conchyliculture charentaise est une filière enracinée dans les écosystèmes de la Gironde et des Pertuis Charentais. Les interdépendances de la conchyliculture avec les autres usages présents sur ces territoires sont connues, anciennes et doivent être vues dans une perspective historique. Les concepts de biodiversité développés entre autres dans le Millenium Ecosystem Assessment permettent une lecture nouvelle de la place de la conchyliculture dans son environnement. Les différentes composantes de la biodiversité offrent des services écosystémiques qui permettent à l’homme de profiter de la consommation de coquillages. Mise au point d'un test microcrustacé marin ArchiMer

Because of the low number of currently available toxicity tests for marine environment, the authors describe an experimental procedure using a marine copepod : Tigriopus brevicornis. This method can be used to quantify the 50 % inhibition of larval production or growth. The variability in controls larval production reaches about 9 %. The toxicity of two contaminants : tributyltin (TBTF) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) was determined with this method and the 50 % decreases in larval production are respectively 1,4 µg/l (TBTF) and 61 µg/l (Cd++).

Effects of cadmium on aneuploidy and hemocyte parameters in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, are commonly reared in estuaries where they are exposed to anthropogenic pollution. Much research has been made on the toxicity of cadmium to aquatic organisms because the compound recurrently contaminates their environment. Our study examined the influence of cadmium on aneuploidy level (lowered chromosome number in a percentage of somatic cells) and hemocyte parameters in C. gigas at different stages of life. Adults and juveniles were exposed to two different concentrations of cadmium. Aneuploidy is the alteration of the normal diploid chromosome number. In the Pacifie oyster, Crassastrea gigas, hypodiploid cells have regularly been reported as have a negative correlation between this phenomenon and growth and evidence for a genetic basis. We previously demonstrated a positive relationship between a pollutant, atrazine, and aneuploidy in Crassastrea gigas adults and juveniles. Comparative study of potential transfer of natural and anthropogenic cadmium to plankton communities in the North-West African upwelling ArchiMer

A Lagrangian approach based on a physical-biogeochemical modeling was used to compare the potential transfer of cadmium (Cd) from natural and anthropogenic sources to plankton communities (Cd-uptake) in the NorthWest African upwelling. In this region, coastal upwelling was estimated to be the main natural source of Cd while the most significant anthropogenic source for marine ecosystem is provided by phosphate industry. This report synthesizes the knowledge on the biogeochemical cycle, bioconcentration processes and ecotoxicity of cadmium in the marine environment. Man induced changes on the cadmium cycle, especially along the French coasts are reviewed. Concentration levels, mechanisms and fluxes between geochemical reservoirs are assessed. Emphasis is given on sublethal effects and toxicity mechanisms. Quality standards used in European Community countries are listed. Conclusions and recommendations for environmental management and research are given.

Contribution à l'étude des effets de la bioaccumulation de cadmium par l'huître Crassostrea gigas dans l'estuaire de la Gironde ArchiMer

Le cadmium, sous produit du zinc est utilisé en industrie. La quasi totalité du cadmium utilisé a été disséminée dans l'environnement. Le cadmium provoque chez l'homme des intoxications par inhalation et par ingestion par l'intermédiaire d'aliments contaminés. Les organismes marins comme l'huître concentrent le cadmium et le stockent sous des formes biodisponibles par les mammifères qui les consomment. Face à ce problème important nous avons mené une enquète avec l'aide de l' IFREMER et de la DDASS sur les effets possibles de l'accumulation de cadmium par les consommateurs d'huitres. Quantifying diet-borne metal uptake in Gammarus pulex using stable isotope tracers ArchiMer

Gammarids are aquatic amphipods widely used for water quality monitoring. To investigate the copper and cadmium diet-borne metal uptake in Gammarus pulex, we adapted the pulse-chase stable isotopes-based approach to determine the food ingestion rate (IR), the gut retention time (GRT) and the metal assimilation efficiencies (AE). G. pulex were fed with 65Cu-, 106Cd-, and 53Cr-labeled alder leaves for 7.5 h and then with unlabeled leaves for 5 d. Cadmium pathways in an exploited intertidal ecosystem with chronic cadmium inputs (Marennes-Oleron, Atlantic coast, France) ArchiMer

The Marennes-Oleron Bay is subject to chronic pollution by cadmium (Cd) from the Gironde watershed. An ecosystem approach was used to study the fate of cadmium in the different biological compartments. The median Cd concentration was 0.4 mu g g(-1) dry weight for the 63 benthic species measured. When combined with the respective biomasses for the different species studied, we estimated that 7 kg of Cd is partitioned into the soft tissues of the benthic species in the bay. The majority of this cadmium was distributed between primary producers, mainly microphytobenthos (40 %), and suspension-feeders, mainly oysters (40 %). The impact of environmental factors on aneuploidy level in the oyster Crassostrea gigas was studied with experiments in controlled conditions which exposed adult and juvenile oysters to different pollutants (atrazine, a herbicide, and cadmium, a heavy metal) frequently found in Marennes-Oléron Bay. A positive correlation between atrazine concentration and aneuploidy in C. gigas was observed. Moreover, the impact of atrazine on aneuploidy level persisted in time both within and between generations, demonstrating the influence of an environmental pollution on this phenomenon. The early diagenesis of Cd and Hg has been studied in different coastal areas (vasière Ouest-Gironde, Pertuis d'Antioche, baie de Marennes-Oléron). For these two metals, the fluxes at the sediment-water interface have been calculated. The flounder (Platichthys flesus) is a flatfish that inhabits marine coastal environments, especially estuaries. It is an alternative quantitative biological indicator to the common marine mussel (Mytilus spp.), which is currently used as a sentinel species to monitor chemical contamination in numerous monitoring programmes. Response of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera to cadmium and chromium: Identification of molecular biomarkers ArchiMer

This study was designed to identify in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, used as a bio-accumulator, molecular biomarkers for the presence of heavy metals in the lagoon environment. Pearl oysters were exposed to 2 concentrations (1 and 10 μg L− 1) of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) compared to a control. Twelve target genes encoding proteins potentially involved in the response to heavy metal contamination with antioxidant, detoxification or apoptosis activities were selected. P. margaritifera accumulated Cd but not Cr, and mortality was related to the amount of Cd accumulated in tissues.
