Virulence factors of Escherichia coli isolated from diarrheic calves Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rigobelo,E.C.; Gamez,H.J.; Marin,J.M.; Macedo,C.; Ambrosin,J.A.; Ávila,F.A..
One hundred seventy-three Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves from northwestern São Paulo State, having diarrhea were examined for the production of thermolabile (LT) and thermostable (ST) enterotoxins and for the presence of virulence factors associated with bovine colibacillosis. Eighty-five (49.1%) of the E.coli strains produced toxins; 53 isolates were detected as producing STa toxin, and 9 also produced LT toxin. By PCR, 23 isolates were shown to harbor only the LT-II gene. Nine (5.2%) isolates harbored Shiga toxin genes: four carried the stx2 gene, four the stx1 gene and one carried both. Three of the isolates showing stx1 also carried the eae gene. Among the E. coli isolates examined for susceptibility to 10 antimicrobial agents,...

Ávila,L.G.; Silva,D.G.; Sato,R.A.; Fagliari,J.J..
The clinical conditions of healthy calves infected with 10(9) CFU of Salmonella Typhimurium were evaluated and the viability of the experimental model in disease induction was verified. Twelve male Holstein calves, 10 to 15-days old, were examined. They were allocated into two groups, control and experimentally infected. Animals were submitted to clinical examination after inoculation and at every 24 hours, during six days after infection. Samples of rectal swabs were collected for Salmonella Typhimurium isolation. Results showed that all animals had different degrees of diarrhea, with mucus and bleeding, 24 to 72 hours after experimental infection with Salmonella Typhimurium, accompanied by fever, but no signs of sepsis. The isolation of Salmonella...

Fagliari,J.J.; Weiss,D.J.; McClenanhan,D.; Evanson,O.A..
Ten healthy 2 to 4-week-old Holstein calves were randomly allotted into control and infected groups. Control calves (n=5) were inoculated intrabronchially with 5ml of Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline solution (DPBSS). Infected calves (n=5) were inoculated intrabronchially with 5x10(9) log-phase Mannheimia haemolytica organisms suspended in 5ml of DPBSS. Blood samples were obtained 15 minutes before and one, two, four and six hours after inoculation. Serum protein concentrations were determined by means of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Serum concentrations of proteins with molecular weights of 125,000 D (ceruloplasmin), 60,000 D (a 1-antitrypsin), 45,000 D (haptoglobin), and 40,000 D (acid glycoprotein) were significantly...

Pharmacokinetics of sodium meclofenamate in pre-ruminant cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Picco,E.J.; Diaz David,D.C.; Encinas,T.; Rubio,M.R.; Boggio,J.C..
The pharmacokinetic profile of sodium meclofenamate, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, was determined in six pre-ruminant calves after intravenous and intramuscular administration at a dose of 2.2mg/kg of body weight. Meclofenamate concentrations were measured using a high performance liquid chromatography assay. The pharmacokinetics of sodium meclofenamate after intravenous and intramuscular administration to calves were characterised by a rapid distribution phase (t½alpha ), 15.45± 4.85min and 23.14± 7.24min for the intravenous and intramuscular administration, respectively, followed by a longer elimination phase (t½beta ) after intramuscular treatment (17.55± 6.52h.). The apparent volume of distribution (Vd) of the drug after intravenous...

Serum protein concentrations, including acute phase proteins, in calves with hepatogenous photosensitization Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fagliari,J.J.; Passipieri,M.; Okuda,H.T.; Silva,S.L.; Silva,P.C..
One hundred 6- to 12-month-old Nelore calves were allotted into control group (G1; 50 healthy calves) and photosensitization group (G2; n= 50). Blood samples were collected 12 to 24 hours after the onset of dermatitis (M1), and 15 to 30 days after that (M2), at time of resolution of clinical signs. Serum protein electrophoresis was performed by means of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Eighteen serum proteins with molecular weights ranging from 16,000 to 189,000 daltons (Da) were identified in all calves. In M1 and M2 serum concentrations of proteins with molecular weights of 115,000Da (ceruloplasmin), 61,000Da (a1-antitrypsin), 45,000Da (haptoglobin), and 40,000Da (acid glycoprotein) were significantly increased in calves. In...

Bovine coronavirus detection in a collection of diarrheic stool samples positive for group a bovine rotavirus BABT
Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Stipp,Danilo Tancler; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Neonatal diarrhea is an important cause of economic losses for cattle farmers. The main viral etiologies of enteric diseases are group A rotaviruses (GARV) and the bovine coronavirus (BCoV). Although both viruses infect calves of the same age, the occurrence of mixed infections is still under studied. The present study describes the co-infection of BCoV and GARV in stool samples. Forty-four diarrheic fecal samples from calves up to 60 days old that had previously tested positive for GARV by SS-PAGE were analyzed using semi-nested PCR for BCoV. A product with 251 bp of the BCoV nucleoprotein gene was amplified in 15.9% (7/44) of the samples, demonstrating that co-infection is not an unusual event. These results reinforce the need for testing for both GARV...

Clinical and virological characteristics of calves experimentally infected with a Brazilian isolate of bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1a Ciência Rural
Quadros,Luana Marchi; Jardim,José Conrado dos Santos; Merchioratto,Ingryd; Brum,Mário Celso Sperotto.
ABSTRACT: To study the pathogenicity of the Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 1a 241.10 isolate, four calves were intranasally inoculated with a viral suspension containing 107.2 TCID50 mL-1. One calf was left uninoculated and kept in contact with the other calves to investigate viral transmissibility. After inoculation, the animals were monitored daily for clinical signs of infection. The presence of the virus in the blood and nasal secretions was confirmed by virus isolation in cell culture. White blood cells were quantified prior to and every 3 days after infection, and the presence of antibodies was checked every 7 days, starting at day 0 until day 42 post-inoculation (pi). After infection, nasal and ocular serous secretions were...

Pulmonary choristoma is a rare malformation reported in different animal species defined as a mass of normal histological pulmonary tissue in an abnormal location. A case of pulmonary choristoma and meningocele is reported in a calf that presented a fluctuating subcutaneous fluid containing mass, measuring 15 x 15 x 20cm in the skull frontal region. The skin covering the sac was surgically removed. Macroscopically, subcutaneous nodules up to 2cm in diameter with irregular whitish areas mixed with red areas were observed. In the histological examination, pulmonary lobules tissue composed by alveoli, bronchi, bronchioles and cartilage were observed. Dilated blood vessels and hemorrhages were present between the lobules. In this case the pulmonary choristoma...
