Calliphoridae (Diptera) from Southeastern Argentinean Patagonia: Species Composition and Abundance 99
Schnack,Juan A.; Mariluis,Juan C..
Species composition and spatial and temporal numerical trends of blow flies (Diptera, Calliphoridae) species from three southeastern Patagonia localities: Río Grande (53° 48' S, 67° 36' W) (province of Tierra del Fuego), Río Gallegos (51° 34' S, 69° 14' W) and Puerto Santa Cruz (50° 04' S, 68° 27' W) (province de Santa Cruz) were studied during November, December (1997), and January and February (1998). Results showed remarkable differences of overall fly abundance and species relative importance at every sampling site; nevertheless, they shared a poor species representation (S £ 6). The cosmopolitan Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, the nearly worldwide Lucilia sericata (Meigen), and the native Compsomyiops fulvicrura (Robineau-Desvoidy) prevailed over...

Estudo filogenético de Mesembrinellinae com ênfase no gênero Eumesembrinella Townsend (Diptera, Calliphoridae) 104
Toma,Ronaldo; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
A study of phylogenetic relationships of the genera of Mesembrinellinae and of the species of Eumesembrinella Townsend, 1931, on the ground of shared derived character states (synapomorphies) is presented. Resulting the following assumption: Laneella Mello, 1967 presenting sister group relationship with all other Mesembrinellinae, followed by Souzalopesiella Guimarães, 1977, M. peregrina Aldrich, 1922 that was isolated from Mesembrinella Giglio-Tos, 1893. Mesembrinella was considered paraphiletic, its species were judged in changeable positions at the bifurcation point of analysis of Albuquerquea Mello, 1967 with the tricotomic interrelationships of Thompsoniella Guimarães, 1977, Huascaromusca Townsend, 1918 and Eumesembrinella Townsend, 1931. Análise de sobrevivência e estimativa de entropia para Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) 104
Moura,Maurício O.; Bonatto,Sionei R..
The life expectancy of Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann, 1830) reared in artificial diet and controlled temperatures chamber set at 27±1oC, 70±10% RH and 12 hours of photophase was analysed using entropy (H). Entropy (H) was used to quantify the distribuition of deaths between ages and then quantify the impact of mortality on life expectancy. The entropy values obtained for males (H=0,245) and females (H=0,299) were intermediary between the theoretical values of H=0,5 and H=0 suggesting a tendency toward rectangular distribuitions in both sexes. The effect of mortality across ali ages on expectation of life was different at each age. For males the highest values were found between days 10 and 20 and between days 15 and 25 for females. This íindings imply...

Bonatto,Sionei Ricardo.
Bionomic characteristics of Sarconesia chloroüaster (Wiedemann, 1830) were obtained, rearing it with an artificial diet and a conlrolled temperature chamber set at 27±lºC, 70± 10% RH and 12 hours photophase. The duration of the wholeevolutive cycle ofS. cholorogaster was about 19.61 days. The incubation period was the shortest (14.30 hours), the pupal one (pre-pupal and pupal together) was the longest (9.57 days), followed by the larval period that had about 9.44 days. A life table for immature stages was done in order to obtain a survival curve. The average of the adults longevity was about 25.28 days. There is no statistical difference between the duration of male and female longevity. The duration of the periods of pre-posture and posture were almost...

Calliphoridae (Diptera) em Manaus, Amazonas: II. Padrão de atividade de vôo em cinco espécies 104
Paraluppi,Norival D.; Castellón,Elóy G..
Five species of calliphorid flies, Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794), C. putoria (Wiedemann, 1830), C. albiceps (Wiedemann. 1819), Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius, 1775) and Phaenicia eximia (Wiedemann, 1819), were collected hourly belween 6:00 and 18:00h., during five consecutive days per month for 12 moths; using home-made traps baited with rotting bovine lung. The data were statisticaly analyzed with relation to precipitation, temperature, relative humidity and luminosity. The results indicate that precipitation must have acted upon the seasonal abundance of the species, and that these responded equally to temperature, relative humidity and luminosity, throughout the entire day, except for P. eximia, which exhibited greater sensibility to these...

First description of the immature stages of Hemilucilia segmentaria (Diptera: Calliphoridae) 48
THYSSEN,PATRICIA J; LINHARES,ARÍCIO X.
The immature stages oí Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius, 1805) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are described. Egg morphology and structures such as the cephalopharyngeal skeleton, anterior and posterior spiracles, and the dorsal spines between the prothorax and mesothorax from first, second and third instar larvae are characterized, using light and scanning electron microscopy. This species is abundant in Neotropical forests and, because of its necrophagous behavior, is of substantial medico-legal importance for estimating the postmortem interval in criminal investigations. Information presented herein may be useful to differentiate among eggs and larvae of closely related species and to supplement the database for blowfly identification

Demographic aspects of Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera, Calliphoridae) adults maintained under experimental conditions: reproductive rate estimates 52
Carvalho,Marcelo Henrique de; Von Zuben,Claudio José.
The objective of this work was to evaluate some aspects of the populational ecology of Chrysomya megacephala, analyzing demographic aspects of adults kept under experimental conditions. Cages of C. megacephala adults were prepared with four different larval densities (100, 200, 400 and 800). For each cage, two tables were made: one with demographic parameters for the life expectancy estimate at the initial age (e0), and another with the reproductive rate and average reproduction age estimates. Populational parameters such as the intrinsic growth rate (r) and the finite growth rate (lambda) were calculated as well.

Behavior of the combined radial post-feeding larval dispersal of the blowflies Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya albiceps (Diptera, Calliphoridae) and implications for forensic entomology 52
Gomes,Leonardo; Sanches,Marcos Rogério; Von Zuben,Claudio José.
The aims of this work was to study the life stages of Chrysomya megacephala in a circular arena allowing the combined radial post-feeding dispersal from the center of the arena of C. albiceps and C. megacephala larvae. To determine the location of each pupa, the distance from the center, the depth and weight of each pupa formed were analyzed. For the larvae of C. albiceps, females released buried deeper than males, reaching an average depth of 10.74 cm and C. megacephala larvae presented greater average results than C. albiceps for all variables, particularly distance, which was 16.02 cm for this species and 12.30 cm for C. albiceps. C. albiceps larvae preyed on 30 C. megacephala larvae in both experiments. These results could be used in forensic...

Fernandes,Ciciane Pereira Marten; Machado,Camila; Lopes,Thiago Vaz; Cunha Filho,Nilton; Bretanha,Paulo Ribeiro; Schons,Sandro; Félix,Samuel Rodrigues; Nobre,Márcia de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Myiases occur by the infestation of fly larvae in tissues of live vertebrate animals, resulting in economic loss. Phytotherapy is considered an important alternative in the control of insects, which may reduce the economic impacts . Carapa guianensis is a plant that has been studied as a repellent against mosquitoes and Caesalpinia ferrea is reported in tropical climates, and there are few studies about its repellent action. The present study was designed to evaluate the repellent action of s C. guianensis and C. ferrea plants on flies species of the Calliphoridae family. W.O.T. traps containing deteriorated bovine liver and herbs cream of at concentrations of 20 and 50% were used to catch the flies. It was reported that the creams containing C....
