The species Vellozia sincorana L.B.Sm. & Ayensu is key to biodiversity conservation in the tropical mountain region of Brazil. The massive post-fire flowering of this endemic species provides a large, episodic supply of floral resources, mostly nectar, to animals.

O gênero Phyllanthus L. (Euphorbiaceae) na Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brasil Acta Botanica

Este trabalho trata do estudo taxonômico das espécies de Phyllanthus L. encontradas na Chapada Diamantina, no Estado da Bahia. Foram reconhecidas 11 espécies: P. amarus Schumach. & Thonn., P. angustissimus Müll. Arg., P. claussenii Müll. Arg., P. flagelliformis Müll. Arg., P. heteradenius Müll. Arg., P. klotzschianus Müll. Arg., P. niruri L., P. orbiculatus Rich., P. scoparius Müll. Arg., P. spartioides Pax & K. Hoffm e Phyllanthus sp. O trabalho inclui chave de identificação para as espécies, bem como descrições e ilustrações para cada uma delas.

The role of temporal scale in linear edge effects on a submontane Atlantic forest arboreal community Acta Botanica

This study aims to detect the composition, abundance patterns, and successional stage distributions exhibited by arboreal species inside and at the linear edge of a submontane seasonal forest in the Chapada Diamantina (12°28'31'S, 41°23'14'W), Bahia, Brazil. The individual plants with breast height diameters ≥5 cm were sampled in 30 quadrats (10 m × 10 m), 15 in the forest edge and 15 inside the forest. Species were classified according to successional category. Phytosociological and diversity indices were calculated. Shannon indices were compared using Hutcheson's t-test, and the remaining parameters were analyzed by ANOVA. Habitat heterogeneity and diversity of bryophytes in campos rupestres Acta Botanica

ABSTRACT Campos rupestres (rupestrian grasslands) are characterized by the presence of rock outcrops associated with an herbaceous-shrub physiognomy typically growing on quartzitic soils; they occur a wide variety of habitats. Bryophytes respond rapidly and efficiently to variation in microclimate. The present work aimed to study bryophyte species richness, diversity and composition, their life forms, and the substrates they colonize in exposed and shaded habitats in campos rupestres of Chapada Diamantina. Asteraceae in the northern Espinhaço Range, Brazil: richness, endemism and conservation Acta Botanica

ABSTRACT Floristic inventories focussing on the Espinhaço Range have revealed an extensive diversity for Asteraceae and emphasize the high degree of endemism of its species. This study aims to explore the species-rich Asteraceae through a floristic survey, and by identifying endemic records for the municipality of Morro do Chapéu, Bahia. Samples were collected during six field trips in different phytophysiognomies and approximately 1,400 exsiccatae from the main herbaria collections were examined. Asteraceae in Morro do Chapéu is represented by 18 tribes, 72 genera and 119 species. Vellozia sincorana L.B. Sm. & Ayensu, an endemic of campos rupestres, is an endangered species collected by local people to start cooking fires due to the flammability of its resinous stems. A massive flowering of V. sincorana following a wildfire in October 1999 raised some questions: Does fire affect flowering and fruiting of V. sincorana? Is the height of individuals correlated with flowering and fruit production? A wildfire event on 8 November 2008 provided an opportunity to explore these questions. O gênero Evolvulus L. (Convolvulaceae) no município de Morro do Chapéu, BA, Brasil Acta Botanica

Este trabalho trata do estudo taxonômico das espécies de Evolvulus L. encontradas no município de Morro do Chapéu, situado na Chapada Diamantina, no Estado da Bahia. Foram encontrados 12 taxas de Evolvulus: E. argyreus choisy, E. echioides moric., E. elegans moric., E. glomeratus Nees & Mart., E. gnaphalioides Moric., E. gypsophiloides var. confertus Choisy, E. jacobinus Moric., E. latifolius Ker Gawl., E. linarioides Meisn., E. linoides Moric., E. pohlii Meisn. e E. pterocaulon Moric. Este trabalho é a primeira citação de E. argyreus para o Brasil e propõe o restabelecimento de E. echioides e de E. gypsophiloides var. confertus. Inclui chave de identificação para as espécies, descrições e ilustrações para cada uma delas.

The occurrence of microdiamonds in Mesoproterozoic Chapada Diamantina intrusive rocks: Bahia / Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

The origin of diamonds from Serra do Espinhaço in Diamantina region (State of Minas Gerais) and in Chapada Diamantina, Lençóis region (State of Bahia) remains uncertain, even taking into account the ample research carried out during the last decades. The lack of typical satellite minerals in both districts makes a kimberlitic source for these diamonds uncertain. In mid 18th century the occurrence of a metamorphosed igneous rock composed of martite, sericite and tourmaline was described in Diamantina region and named hematitic phyllite, considered by some researchers as a possible diamond source. Conhecimento de pescadores tradicionais sobre a dinâmica espaço-temporal de recursos naturais na Chapada Diamantina, Bahia Biota Neotropica

O conhecimento ecológico tradicional de uma população de pescadores da APA de Marimbus-Iraquara, foi estudado visando obter informações relacionadas à percepção local sobre distribuição espacial e sazonal dos recursos naturais. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevistas livres e semi-estruturadas, observações diretas, turnês guiadas e coletas de material zoológico. Os resultados sugerem a existência de um amplo conhecimento ecológico tradicional sobre as espécies e os ecossistemas locais, especialmente no que se refere à ictiofauna.

Diversidade florística de Rubiaceae na Serra da Fumaça – complexo de Serras da Jacobina, Bahia, Brasil Biota Neotropica

Este trabalho consiste no levantamento das espécies de Rubiaceae encontradas na Serra da Fumaça - complexo de Serras da Jacobina, Bahia. No período de junho de 2011 a agosto de 2012 foram realizadas coletas mensais de material botânico ao longo de trilhas e no interior da floresta contemplando todas as fitofisionomias existentes na área. Foram registradas 36 espécies distribuídas em 20 gêneros. Os gêneros mais representativos em número de espécies foram Borreria G.Mey. (5 spp.), Diodella Small, Mitracarpus Zucc. exSchult. & Schult.f. e Psychotria L. Population structure of two Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 (Teleostei, Characidae) species from upper Paraguaçu river BABT

The fishes of the family Characidae are among the main species of fresh water fishes in South America. In this work, some aspects of the population structure of two Astyanax species were assessed. The fishes were caught in Santo Antônio and São José rivers, in the Paraguaçu basin, by standardized monthly samplings adapted to the microhabitats. Astyanax sp. b (São José river) presented larger size than Astyanax sp. a (Santo Antônio river). The length-weight relationship showed positive allometric growth for Astyanax sp. a, and negative for Astyanax sp. b. Both the species showed a long reproductive period, with higher activities in dry period.

Composition and seasonal variation of the ichthyofauna from upper Rio Paraguaçu (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil) BABT

The aim of this work was to characterize the composition of the ichthyofauna of the upper course of the Rio Paraguaçu. Two excursions were carried out, one in the dry season, and the other in the rainy season, with 36 localities sampled. A total of 63 species were collected. Multivariate analyses indicated that abiotic variables such as the channel order and altitude were the main influences on the number of species present. The number of species in each excursion was equivalent in the two seasons, suggesting that seasonal changes have little influence on the ichthyofauna of this area.
