Fonctionnement hydrodynamique du bassin de Thau. Validation écologique d’un modèle numerique de circulation (programme Écothau) ArchiMer
Millet, B.
The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin de Thau is reproduced with a two-dimensional numerical model of horizontal ciruclation using an Alternate Direction Implicit scheme. A stochastic analysis of frequencies on a yearly time scale of the velocity fields computed in the model and a spatial and stochastic treatment of the term (H2 y2), similar to an effective coefficient of horizontal dispersion by shear effect are presented. This approach will allow the delineation, in a stochastic manner, of the main structures of the circulation in the lagoon and the spatial heterogeneity of its ecohydrodynamic features. Two attempts of analogical research are presented, with sorne examples of the spatial structure in the phytoplankton biomass and the map of the...

Analysis and Interpretation of Frequency–Wavenumber Spectra of Young Wind Waves ArchiMer
Leckler, Fabien; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Peureux, Charles; Benetazzo, Alvise; Bergamasco, Filippo; Dulov, Vladimir.
The energy level and its directional distribution are key observations for understanding the energy balance in the wind-wave spectrum between wind-wave generation, nonlinear interactions, and dissipation. Here, properties of gravity waves are investigated from a fixed platform in the Black Sea, equipped with a stereo video system that resolves waves with frequency f up to 1.4 Hz and wavelengths from 0.6 to 11 m. One representative record is analyzed, corresponding to young wind waves with a peak frequency fp = 0.33 Hz and a wind speed of 13 m s−1. These measurements allow for a separation of the linear waves from the bound second-order harmonics. These harmonics are negligible for frequencies f up to 3 times fp but account for most of the energy at higher...

Freshwater and its role in the Arctic Marine System: sources, disposition, storage, export, and physical and biogeochemical consequences in the Arctic and global oceans ArchiMer
Carmack, E. C.; Yamamoto-kawai, M.; Haine, T. W. N.; Bacon, S.; Bluhm, B. A.; Lique, Camille; Melling, H.; Polyakov, I. V.; Straneo, F.; Timmermans, M. -l.; Williams, W. J..
The Arctic Ocean is a fundamental node in the global hydrological cycle and the ocean's thermohaline circulation. We here assess the system's key functions and processes: 1) the delivery of fresh and low salinity waters to the Arctic Ocean by river inflow, net precipitation, distillation during the freeze/thaw cycle and Pacific Ocean inflows; 2) the disposition (e.g. sources, pathways and storage) of freshwater components within the Arctic Ocean; and 3) the release and export of freshwater components into the bordering convective domains of the North Atlantic. We then examine physical, chemical or biological processes which are influenced or constrained by the local quantities and geochemical qualities of fresh water; these include: stratification and...

The Balearic current and volume transports in the Balearic basin ArchiMer
Garcialadona, E; Castellon, A; Font, J; Tintore, J.
The Balearic basin is a semi-enclosed basin located in the western Mediterranean Sea, connecting the Gulf of Lions and the Alboran basin. While the characteristics and circulation of the water masses have been rather well established, the exchanges with adjacent basins, essential to our understanding of the circulation in the western Mediterranean and for validating outputs of general circulation models, have never been determined in detail. We present here the data from the FE-89 (June 1989) Spanish cruise, during which high-resolution CTD and ADCP measurements were performed on the open boundaries of the Balearic basin. The fluxes for all the boundaries were calculated in a quasi-synoptic fashion. The values found in the Ibiza and Mallorca channels...

Dynamics of an Equatorial River Plume: Theory and Numerical Experiments Applied to the Congo Plume Case ArchiMer
Vic, Clement; Berger, Henrick; Treguier, Anne-marie; Couvelard, Xavier.
The Congo River has the second largest rate of flow in the world and is mainly responsible for the broad tongue of low-salinity water that is observed in the Gulf of Guinea. Despite their importance, near-equatorial river plumes have not been studied as thoroughly as midlatitude plumes and their dynamics remain unclear. Using both theory and idealized numerical experiments that reproduce the major characteristics of the region, the authors have investigated the dynamics of the Congo River plume and examine its sensitivity to different forcing mechanisms. It is found that near-equatorial plumes are more likely to be surface trapped than midlatitude plumes, and the importance of the effect in describing the strong offshore extent of the low-salinity tongue...

La dispersion des apports de la Gironde sur le plateau continental. Données in situ, satellitales et numériques ArchiMer
Hermida, J; Lazure, Pascal; Froidefond, Jm; Jegou, Anne-marie; Castaing, P.
Coastal waters are generally a product of mixing between continental and oceanic originated water masses. Near river mouth areas, as in the Gironde estuary, oceanic waters are modified by the influence of freshwater discharge that introduces suspended and dissolved substances, including pollutants. Within PNOC (Programme National d'Oceanographie Cotiere) our objective is to determine the extent of the influence of the Gironde estuary on to the Aquitanian continental shelf. Several cruises for collecting hydrological data have been carried out in this area. The data of every cruise were coupled with a NOAA-11 satellite passage. The recorded images have been analysed and were compared with the results given by a 3D mathematical model. The interaction among...

First direct estimates of volume and water mass transports across the Reykjanes Ridge ArchiMer
Petit, Tillys; Mercier, Herle; Thierry, Virginie.
The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature located south of Iceland in the North‐Atlantic Ocean that strongly influences the subpolar gyre (SPG) circulation. Based on velocity and hydrographic measurements carried out along the crest of the Reykjanes Ridge from the Icelandic continental shelf to 50°N during the RREX cruise in June – July 2015, we derived the first direct estimates of volume and water mass transports over the Reykjanes Ridge. North of 53.15°N, circulation was mainly westward; south of this latitude it was mainly eastward. The westward transport was estimated at 21.9 ± 2.5 Sv (Sv = 106 m3 s‐1) and represents the SPG intensity. The westward flows followed two main pathways at 57°N near the Bight Fracture Zone and at 59 – 62°N. We...

A dynamic explanation for the origin of the western Mediterranean organic-rich layers ArchiMer
Rogerson, M.; Cacho, I.; Jimenez-espejo, F.; Reguera, M. I.; Sierro, F. J.; Martinez-ruiz, F.; Frigola, J.; Canals, M..
The eastern Mediterranean sapropels are among the most intensively investigated phenomena in the paleoceanographic record, but relatively little has been written regarding the origin of the equivalent of the sapropels in the western Mediterranean, the organic-rich layers (ORLs). ORLs are recognized as sediment layers containing enhanced total organic carbon that extend throughout the deep basins of the western Mediterranean and are associated with enhanced total barium concentration and a reduced diversity (dysoxic but not anoxic) benthic foraminiferal assemblage. Consequently, it has been suggested that ORLs represent periods of enhanced productivity coupled with reduced deep ventilation, presumably related to increased continental runoff, in close...

Anatomical Indicators of Dominance between the Coronary Arteries of Dogs International Journal of Morphology
Oliveira,Carla Lívia Santos de; David,Gustavo Serra; Carvalho,Michelly de Oliveira; Dornelas,; Araújo,Sandra; da Silva,Nailton Cavalcante; Ruiz,Cristiane Regina; Fernandes,Juliana Ruiz; Wafae,Nader.
In humans, the right coronary artery is dominant. However, we did not find any citations in the literature concerning anatomical indicators of dominance among dogs. We used 30 hearts from mongrels of both sexes, fixed in 10% formalin. The branches of the coronary arteries were dissected with special attention to the levels that were considered to be reference points. In 96.7%, the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery reached or went beyond the crux cordis. The subsinuosus interventricular artery, ended before reaching the apex in 21 cases, at the apex in five cases and after the apex in four cases. The paraconal interventricular artery, ended before reaching the apex in two cases, at the apex in 11 cases and after the apex in 17 cases. The region...

Characterizing and Comparing the Spawning Habitats of Sardine (Sardinops sagax) and Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Northern Benguela Region OceanDocs
Tjizoo,Mbeurora Beau.
Spawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary current systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. The northern Benguela, as an eastern boundary current system, is characterized by turbulent conditions that seem to govern the variability observed in the abundance of these species. Sardine and anchovy have developed mechanisms that enable them to maximize productivity. In the northern Benguela, spawning intensity is historically known to be high in periods and vicinities where turbulence is reduced. However, it is believed that selection of conditions for spawning by these species may change withfluctuations in abundance of fish.

Estudios de la circulación forzada por el viento en el estuario del Río de la Plata y sus implicancias en la estratificación: resultados del análisis de datos y simulaciones numéricas OceanDocs
Meccia, V.L..
For the first time, the analysis of historical salinity data and new current series is combined with high resolution numerical simulations, with the aim of understanding the processes that occur in the active and important Río de la Plata estuary (South America). With that objective, the first relatively long ADCP current series collected in two points of the estuary are analyzed. Only 25% of the currents variance is accounted by the tide. Approximately another 25% is associated with internal wave activity at the sampling locations, where a strong stratification exists. These waves are forced by land-sea breeze and tide and are very frequent during spring and summer. The remaining 50% of the energy is wind driven and occurs in synoptic to intra-seasonal...
