Large-scale patterns of river inputs in southwestern Europe: seasonal and interannual variations and potential eutrophication effects at the coastal zone ArchiMer
Romero, Estela; Garnier, Josette; Lassaletta, Luis; Billen, Gilles; Le Gendre, Romain; Riou, Philippe; Cugier, Philippe.
We provide data on nutrient export for 28 rivers in southwestern Europe and analyze long-term changes in the context of anthropogenic pressures and regulation policies. Special attention is given to seasonal variations, because the integrated annual values that are usually provided do not allow us to establish comparisons with seasonal phytoplankton dynamics. The eutrophication risk associated with river inputs is addressed by means of an indicator (Index of Coastal Eutrophication Potential, ICEP, Billen and Garnier, Mar Chem 106:148–160, 2007). An overview of the temporal evolution and the intra-annual variability of the ICEP is discussed for specific rivers and integrated coastal regions. The annual dynamics of the eutrophication indicator is analyzed to...

Etude des transports de matieres en suspension en Manche par l''emploi de l'imagerie CZCS ArchiMer
Thomas, Y.
The suspended matter distribution in Channel surface waters during 1981 have been obtained by the interpretation of radiometer recording (Coastal zone Color Scanner working on Nimbus 7 satellite). After imagery calibration and calculation of suspended matter concentration using algorithm from in situ measurements, the maps interpretation allows the study of: (1) resuspension of infratidal fluvial particles by swells and tides; (2) characterizing of intertidal zone given estuarine material by erosion; (3) determination of river plume limits with regard to Seine flow rate; (4) calculation and modeling of solid load; (5) estimation of suspended particles masses and volumes to strike the balance; (6) differentiation of hydrobiological behaviors in Western and...

Dynamique des eaux (en Baie de Seine): Synthese des discussions ArchiMer
Chabertd'Hieres, G.
The discussions about "water dynamics" have dealt with the knowledge of long-term water mass circulation (from several days to several months), by the effects of three parameters: tides near limits and in the Seine Bay, turbid freshwater discharge (Seine river) and winds. This communication gives information about Eulerian and Lagrangian drift, used for residual current exhibition.

The french approach to managing water resources in the mediterranean and the new European Water Framework Directive ArchiMer
Henocque, Yves; Andral, Bruno.
The main content of the new European Water Framework Directive is presented. Within its river basin management approach, a special mention of coastal waters status is made. Among the issues at stake are the setting up of river basin management plans, including coastal waters, and water quality assessment system leading to an harmonized definition of quality objectives and their appropriate indicators. The Rhone-Mediterranean-Corsica Water Master Plan, launched in 1996, is considered to be well fitted to this river basin approach and the necessary tools which go with it. It shows up how a river quality assessment system (SEQ) can be adapted to the coastal waters and how it can progressively lead to an efficient set of publishable environmental and...

Temporal changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter sedimentation in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Charles, F; Medernach, L; Jordana, E; Nozais, C; Vetion, G; Colomines, Jc.
Gross sedimentation rates (GSRs) were monitored together with meteorological data and the main biochemical characteristics of the collected material (i.e. organic content, C, N, total proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and available proteins) over a three year cycle at a shallow station (18 m) of the Bay of Banyuls, France. GSRs were between 0.26 (11/04/92) and 317.75 gDW m(-2) d(-1) (18/02/94). They followed an annual cycle with low and relatively constant values during spring and summer and high, variable Values during fall and winter. During the study GSRs correlated poorly (state of the sea, precipitation) or even non-significantly (wind speed) with the main meteorological parameters. GSRs correlated negatively with the organic content of the material...

Flood inputs in a Mediterranean coastal zone impacted by a large urban area: Dynamic and fate of trace metals ArchiMer
Oursel, B.; Garnier, C.; Zebracki, Mathilde; Durrieu, G.; Pairaud, Ivane; Omanović, D.; Cossa, Daniel; Lucas, Yves.
Trace elements and organic carbon inputs to the Mediterranean sea from an urbanized area (Marseille city) were studied and characterized during flood events. Inputs were brought to the sea by two small coastal rivers whose waters were mixed together and also with treated wastewaters (TWW) just before discharge. The monitoring of the rivers during flood events showed the high temporal dynamics of water flow, suspended particulate matter (SPM), organic carbon and trace metals concentrations, typical of small coastal Mediterranean rivers and requiring an appropriate sampling strategy. Dissolved/particulate partition coefficient (log Kd) in rivers during floods remained quasi-constant for a given trace element, but differed from one element to another...

Trophic ecology of suspension-feeding bivalves inhabiting a north-eastern Pacific coastal lagoon: Comparison of different biomarkers ArchiMer
Mathieu-resuge, Margaux; Kraffe, Edouard; Le Grand, Fabienne; Boens, Andy; Bideau, Antoine; Lluch-cota, Salvador E.; Racotta, Ilie S.; Schaal, Gauthier.
Understanding the nature and origins of food sources supporting coastal lagoon-inhabiting organisms is necessary to evaluate the ecological status of such ecosystems. The trophic ecology of a bivalve specie Spondylus crassisquama was studied in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon (Baja California, Mexico), combining stable isotope (SI), fatty acid (FA) and sterols analyses along a transect under oceanic influences. The second objective of the study was to investigate if sterols compositions give complementary information to those obtained from FA and SI. Temporal and spatial patterns of the three biomarkers in bivalve tissues suggest oceanic inputs at the mouth of the lagoon, while the inner station was characterized by a contribution of local sources including an...

Atmospherically-promoted photosynthetic activity in a well-mixed ecosystem: Significance of wet deposition events of nitrogen compounds ArchiMer
Boulart, C; Flament, Pierre; Gentilhomme, V; Deboudt, K; Migon, C; Lizon, F; Schapira, M; Lefebvre, Alain.
Wet atmospheric deposition of dissolved N, P and Si species is studied in well-mixed coastal ecosystem to evaluate its potential to stimulate photosynthetic activities in nutrient-depleted conditions. Our results show that, during spring, seawater is greatly depleted in major nutrients: Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN), Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) and Silicic acid (Si), in parallel with an increase of phytoplanktonic biomass. In spring (March-May) and summer (June-September), wet atmospheric deposition is the predominant source (> 60%, relative to riverine contribution) for nitrates and ammonium inputs to this N-limited coastal ecosystem. During winter (October-February), riverine inputs of DIN predominate (> 80%) and are annually the most...

Tanzanian Coastal and Marine Resources: Some Examples Illustrating Questions of OceanDocs
Francis, J.; Bryceson, I..
The coast of Tanzania is characterised by a wide diversity of biotopes and species, typical of the tropical Indowest Pacific oceans, and the peoples living there utilise a variety of its natural resources. Because of the extent of the diversity and variety, several different examples are used by this study to elucidate the complexity of issues and multiplicity of management responses related to use of coastal and marine resources. It emerges that coastal management requires an integrated cross-sectoral approach to address the wide array of interrelated issues involved.

Pressures on the Nigerian Coastal Zone: Its Environmental need for Sustainable Resources OceanDocs
Umana, U.A..
A coastal zone contains a range of natural envionments that man uses in different ways to provide a variety of goods and services. Some of these goods (e.g. oil and gas, fish and mangrove wood) and services (e.g. recreational values of beautiful beaches) are tangible and marketable. Other such as nutrient flows, waste reception and stabilization functions are less tangible.

The coastal zone and oceanic problems of Sub-Saharan Africa OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C..
The coastal zone and oceans surrounding Sub-Saharan Africa, with their vast resources of food, energy, and minerals, not only are composed of various fragile ecosystems, but are scenes of a variety of often conflicting uses. At present, the uncontrolled development of the coastal zone and ocean and the almost haphazard exploitation of their natural resources threaten to turn the promise of economic prosperity into an environmental nightmare that portends great dangers for present and future generations. There is the urgent need to put in place national management policies that address the environmental controls and procedures to be applied in pursuit of economic development. However, the oceans have no physical boundaries corresponding to national...

Dynamique sédimentaire et répartition granulométrique des sédiments de surface dans la frange littorale Ras Taguermess-Ras Marmour (golfe de Gabès) OceanDocs
Brahim., M.; Abdelfattah., A..
