About 30% of the 100 million inhabitants of the western Indian Ocean (WIO) region reside in the coastal strip and are heavily dependent on goods and services provided by oceans and coasts. Coastal areas provide food and resources which support the economies of coastal states of the western Indian Ocean such as fisheries, shipping, petroleum exploitation, seabed mining, energy and tourism. Coastal and marine areas house a bounty of biodiversity and the oceans are also responsible for balancing the extremes of climate conditions. However, our efforts to effectively manage the use of coastal resources in a sustainable manner are constrained by inadequate knowledge in the ecosystems and inadequate capacities to generate the knowledge. This is compounded by the... |

Construction of large dams with reservoir type storage impound water behind them for seasonal annual, and in some cases for multi-annual storage and regulation of a river. Similarly, tubewells abstract surface and ground water bodies from their natural flow. The impoundment of water by damming and its abstraction through tubewells are common practices in the world and even within the Africa region (WCD, 2000). Globally, the number of large dams has grown at a tremendous pace during the last 50 years (Fig. 1.1) The fast growth in dam construction is driven by an increasing demand of water from urban and rural communities for reliable freshwater supply, agricultural irrigation and hydro-electric power. As these practices become more widespread, they are... |

Integrated management study of the western area of Batabanó gulf, southern coast of Pinar del Río, is presented. A taxonomy of uses and of matrices relating uses and resources, were done. Uses are biological, hydrological, populational and recreational and are also included the run-offs from the coast and the research studies done in the area. Hydrological uses present a high level of interaction with other factors, showing it importance in the activities taken place in the zone. This interaction may be dangerous over the resources where the fisheries are developed. The resources studied were from the agriculture and fishery ones, woodland and bee production and the ecosystem. Lobster fishery is affected by a varied group of factors, like the volume of... |

The Kenya coastline extends from 40 4's to 4041's from Kiunga in the North coast to Vanga in the South, wich is a distance of ca 575km. The coastal areas of Kenya are known to be rich and extremely valuable as they concentrate a rich diversity of natural habitats and a large variety of natural resources. Coastal communities have from time immemorial depended on the exploitation of these resources for commerce and industry. Alongs this coastline, mangroves are common feature in delta, creeks, protected bays, island and river estuaries. |

The aim of this guide is to assist in the organisation of environmental information and thus to contribute to the concerted preparation of management plans which should be implemented by all the environmental actors : decision-makers, managers, users and scientists. The proposed methodological approach provides the unifying thread for the user of this guide. It comprises a certain number of stages which lead to the formulation of the management objectives. The assistance given contributes finally to the definition of the real management strategy to be applied (plan, diagram, programme of action and follow up). The architecture of this methodological approach is organised around a master chart, referred to as “Stages in the Approach”. This indicates the... |

The Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM) Training Workshop for the English Speaking Caribbean States was held in Bridgetown, Barbados, March 16–18, 2011. The Meeting was attended by 22 participants representing Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Curacao, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago. The main objective of the meeting was to assist Member States in building the resilience of SIDS economies mainly dependant on coastal tourism using knowledge and expertise of the CZMU of Barbados for developing their own capacity to manage coastal areas. The meeting updated the ICAM management plan for the Caribbean Small islands incorporating economic and social issues as well as recent priorities of climate change adaptation and coastal... |

Like people in many nations, South Africans value their coastal resources and are striving to manage them more effectively (Cicin-Sain & Knecht 1998; CMPP 1998, 2000; Glavovic 2000 a, b, c; Glavovic et al. 2001). The White Paper for Sustainable Coastal Development in South Africa aims to promote sustainable coastal development through integrated coastal management. This new policy represents a marked shift from earlier views of the coast and how it should be managed. What was, until relatively recently, a predominantly biophysical and bureaucratic view has been transformed into a participatory approach driven by human development imperatives and the need to promote sustainable livelihoods. How did this transformation take place, and what lessons might... |

Developing capacity in coastal and marine issues of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region is a very important activity, given the present growing and projected pressures on the coastal and marine resources. The region’s experience in both knowledge-based, technical and equipment capacity building has been progressively growing. Many large milestones have been reached in this current effort to assess the capacity of the WIO region both in the form of increasing the knowledge base on core competencies of a good coastal manager as well as identifying the capacity-building efforts going on in the region. > Management of coastal and marine issues is critical to ensure a sustainable future in a region where tens of millions of people depend on coastal... |

The statement ‘Competition for limited resources and space makes coastal regions flashpoints for conflict’ summarizes the reasons for holding an inter-regional workshop on conflict resolution in Maputo, Mozambique from 19–23 November 2001. Participants from African, Asian, European and South American regions met for five days to discuss ways to manage conflicts over coastal resources and values in continental coastal areas. A variety of case studies dealing with coastal conflicts in urban and industrial sites, as well as rural and protected areas, were discussed. Recognizing that conflict cannot be fully prevented or resolved, the goal is to reduce conflict to a manageable level. The first step in any resolution process is to describe the nature and cause... |
