ECOSCOPA.

Soletchnik, Patrick; Bouquet, Anne-lise; Mille, Dominique.

Two Rare Anatomical Variations of External Jugular Vein: an Embryological Overview International Journal of Morphology
Ghosh,Susmita; Mandal,Lopamudra; Roy,Sanchita; Bandyopadhyay,Manimay.
Human anatomy is an ocean of unending variations and its mysteries are being unravelled since ages. Knowledge of variations in the superficial veins of head and neck is essential to carry out successful surgical procedures. During routine dissection of head and neck of two middle aged male cadavers, in the Department of Anatomy, Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata, India, we came out with some interesting venous architecture. The retromandibular vein on the left side of both the cadavers was found to be undivided and joined with the facial vein in the neck at an acute angle to form a common venous trunk at variable distances from the angle of the mandible. That trunk ultimately drained into the left subclavian vein. This might be the result of...

Multiple Variations of the Branches of the Brachial Plexus with Bilateral Connections between Ulnar and Radial Nerves International Journal of Morphology
Ajayi,Nasirudeen Oladipupo; Lazarus,Lelika; Satyapal,Kapil Sewsaran.
During routine dissection of the upper limbs of a Caucasian male cadaver, multiple variations of the branches of the brachial plexus were observed. On the left side, the musculocutaneous nerve was absent and the muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm were innervated by the median nerve. The median nerve was also formed from three roots viz; two from the lateral and one from the medial cord of the brachial plexus. On the right side, the musculocutaneous nerve contributed a long communicating branch to the median nerve in the distal half of the arm. There were also communicating branches between the ulnar and radial nerves in both limbs at the humeral level. The co-existence of these variations appears to be unique and has not been reported in the...

Communication of the Anterior Branch of the Great Auricular Nerve with the Cervical Branch of Facial Nerve and its Variant Nerve Endings Deep in the Parotid Gland International Journal of Morphology
Rao Sirasanagandla,Srinivasa; Nayak B,Satheesha; Bhat,Kumar M. R; Ravindra S,Swamy.
The communications between the branches of cervical plexus and cervical branch of facial nerve are common and are well known. However, this communication usually occurs between the transverse cervical nerve and cervical branch of facial nerve. During routine dissection classes for the Medical undergraduate students, we came across an anatomical variant of anterior division of great auricular nerve. This variation was found in a 60-year-old male cadaver of South Indian origin and it was unilateral. The great auricular nerve arose from the loop of ventral rami of C2 and C3 spinal nerves and divided into anterior and posterior branches. The anterior branch ran obliquely upwards and forwards on the surface of the sternocleidomastoid muscle along with the...

A portable bio-amplifier for electric fish research: design and construction Neotropical Ichthyology
Wells,Jonathan K.; Crampton,William G. R..
The weak electric organ discharges (EODs) of gymnotiform knife fishes can be readily amplified with a wideband amplifier connected to submerged electrodes. The output from such an amplifier can then be monitored with audio speakers or digitized for subsequent analysis. Commercially available devices are expensive and usually require mains electrical power. Here we provide design notes and instructions for the construction and calibration of a cheap, portable, battery-powered, AC-coupled wideband bio-amplifier. This device was designed to allow electric fishes to be located in the field, and also to permit the relatively noise-free acquisition of EOD waveforms from specimens held in temporary captivity. This contribution is intended to encourage students of...

Repeated Games Played in a Network AgEcon
Kinateder, Markus.
Delayed perfect monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted game is modelled by allocating the players to a connected and undirected network. Players observe their immediate neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate over time the repeated game’s history truthfully throughout the network. The Folk Theorem extends to this setup, although for a range of discount factors strictly below 1, the set of sequential equilibria and the corresponding payoff set may be reduced. A general class of games is analyzed without imposing restrictions on the dimensionality of the payoff space. Due to this and the bilateral communication structure, truthful communication arises endogenously only under additional conditions. The model also produces a network result; namely,...

The Glue that Holds Together Supply Chain Networks AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava; Dautzenberg, Kirsti; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
As in the agri-food business supply chain networks are evolving in our paper we want to elaborate on managerial questions regarding them. In this context our first aim is to advance the concept of chain management by introducing a more differentiated view. Since many articles highlight the pivotal role of communication the second aim of our paper refers to the role of communication for the management of supply chain networks. Because the agri-food business is still dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises our third aim is to apply our thoughts of chain management on small and medium-sized enterprises.

Comunicação para o Turismo no Espaço Rural AgEcon
Mariani, Milton Pasquoto; Gehlen, Marco Antonio.

The Geography and Channels of Diffusion at the World's Technology Frontier AgEcon
Keller, Wolfgang.
Convergence in per capita income turns on whether technological knowledge spillovers are global or local. Global spillovers favor convergence, while a geographically limited scope of knowledge diffusion can lead to regional clusters of countries with persistently different levels of income per capita. This paper estimates the importance of geographic distance for technology diffusion, how this changed over time, and whether international trade, foreign direct investment, and communication flows serve as important channels of diffusion. The analysis is based on examining the productivity effects of R&D expenditures in the world's seven major industrialized countries between 1970 and 1995. First, I find that the scope of technology diffusion is severely...

Towards Design For a Nutrient Trading Programme to Improve Water Quality in Lake Rotorua AgEcon
Kerr, Suzi; Lauder, Glen; Fairman, David.
This paper explores how to enhance the role for academic research (natural sciences, economics and their integration; and stakeholder management) within the development and implementation of water quality policy in New Zealand. Our focus is on the use of market based instruments and particularly nutrient trading programmes, which are one important part of the potential tool kit to address these issues. We discuss why nutrient trading might be an appropriate instrument for the Lake Rotorua catchment. We survey the existing literature and then outline the outstanding scientific, economic and governance questions that need to be addressed to design an effective trading programme. Finally we discuss how to design a process to address these questions drawing on...

EL CONSUMIDOR DE FRUTAS Y VERDURAS ECOLÓGICAS: HOMO EST TEMPERATUS AgEcon
Meneses, Gonzalo Dias; Rodriguez, Julia Nieves; Martel, Manuel Lopes.
The aim of this work is to analyze the model of consumer involvement with organic fruits and vegetables. An empirical survey was carried out using a 371 sample size questionnaire, which allowed for both path and multigroups analysis to be done. Based on the results obtained, we can affirm that the level of motivation to consume organic fruits and vegetables is intermediate, as the predominant motives are safety and self-realisation, and the volition model follows an inverse theoretical learning process. Furthermore, there is more than one model, since both gender and income influence significantly the involvement with organic food. Contradicting the predominant theoretical paradigm, this work tries to develop practical implications for organic food...

Communication, governance and multiply-owned Maori lands AgEcon
Barrett-Ohia, O..
Based on the premise that communication is critical to effective governance, this research examines the communication mechanisms used within Maori organisations. It is part of an objective funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology to "Define the important elements in building a governance structure to achieve alignment with the goals of owners on multiply-owned (Maori) lands". It contributes to both government and Maori agendas to accelerate Maori economic development while acknowledging the challenge in reconciling economic imperatives to increase profit with Maori cultural obligations to uphold spiritual and cultural (kaitiaki) obligations. Previous studies undertaken by AgResearch with groups other than the "traditional farmer"...
