Insect-plant interactions: new pathways to a better comprehension of ecological communities in Neotropical savannas Neotropical Entomology
Del-Claro,Kleber; Torezan-Silingardi,Helena M.
The causal mechanisms shaping and structuring ecological communities are among the most important themes in ecology. The study of insect-plant interactions in trophic nets is pointed out as basic to improve our knowledge on this issue. The cerrado tropical savanna, although extremely diverse, distributed in more than 20% of the Brazilian territory and filled up with rich examples of multitrophic interactions, is underexplored in terms of biodiversity interaction. Here, this ecosystem is suggested as valuable to the study of insect-plant interactions whose understanding can throw a new light at the ecological communities' theory. Three distinct systems: extrafloral nectary plants or trophobiont herbivores and the associated ant fauna; floral...

Diversity of Calliphoridae (Insecta: Diptera) in Hudson, Argentina Neotropical Entomology
Centeno,Néstor; Almorza,David; Arnillas,Carlos.
Blowflies have sanitary and forensic importance, and different levels of association with human settlements (synanthropy). Therefore, specific diversity changes in each site could be used as an indicator of the anthropic impact. In this study, the community of Calliphoridae in Hudson (Argentina) was sampled in three sites with different degrees of Synanthropy (natural, rural and urban). Flies were attracted with bait and collected with an insect net. Twelve samples were collected in each site and both Simpson and Shannon diversity indexes were calculated. The Natural area was the most diverse. The other two areas showed no significant differences between them. The diversity was higher in the middle of spring and in late summer, and lower at the end of...

Geographical transition zone of Solenopsis fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Pseudacteon fly parasitoids (Diptera: Phoridae) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Pesquero,MA; Dias,AMPM.
Solenopsis saevissima (Smith) and Solenopsis invicta Buren are the most abundant and widely distributed fire ants in Brazil. The occurrence of the two fire ant species and of their parasitoids Pseudacteon spp. is described for a climatic and phytophysiognomic transition area in the state of São Paulo. Both fire ant species have a parapatric distribution, apparently determined by the climate: S. saevissima predominates in the north part of São Paulo (Aw climate), while S. invicta in the south (Cfa climate). A sympatric area is observed between the latitudes 21ºS and 23ºS. Two different communities of parasitic decapitating flies were associated with S. saevissima in the north and with S. invicta in the south, with a sympatric area in the municipality of São...

Abstract Forest fragments in urban areas have many habitat resources that frogs use for refuge, reproduction and growth. Knowledge of an anuran assembly is the first step towards understanding the importance of these forest fragments in areas highly threatened by anthropogenic actions. We sampled anurans during the day and night from November 2012 to August 2013 through visual and acoustic surveys. We found 333 individuals belonging to 19 species. The highest richness and abundance were recorded in January whereas the lowest richness and abundance were recorded in June. Most species were found in open areas. Our results highlight the importance of well-studied urban fragments for the anuran community. The conservation of these habitats may ensure the...

Pastoral Communities in Nigeria: Another Case of Marginalisation AgEcon
Aderinoye-Abdulwahab, S.A.; Adefalu, L.L..
The study which was conducted in rural communities of Kwara State, Nigeria set to uncover how pastoralists‟ families cope with their livelihoods when their husbands have gone grazing with the cattle. It examined the social and financial coping strategies of their families through Focus group discussions and interviews with pastoralists, their wives and some extension agents. The findings revealed that the pastoralists live in marginalised conditions and they lack access to social services needed to boost their living conditions. The study recommended increased social networks by government and agricultural bodies to improve on the livelihoods of these people.

Essays on Regional Differences in Time Preferences and Attachment to Place AgEcon
Yi, Dale.
Data from a national telephone survey of working-aged adults in the continental US is combined with US Census 2000 data to explore the determinants of attachment to place and time preferences for jobs, natural amenities, and financial assets. Five regions in the US were delineated so that regional differences in the determinants of the dependent variables of interest could be parsed out. The regions are the Great Plains, Borderlands, Appalachia, the Plantation Belt, and the rest of the continental US. The first essay that explores time preferences for jobs, natural amenities, and money. Each was embedded with a ten percent rate of return. In aggregate, the nation as a whole demonstrated that the discount rate for jobs, natural amenities, and financial...

Gender and Local Floodplain Management Institutions--A Case Study from Bangladesh AgEcon
Sultana, Parvin; Thompson, Paul M..
Floodplain wetlands are the major common pool natural resource in Bangladesh. Mostly men fish, and both men and women collect aquatic plants and snails. Case studies contrast a women-only, men-only, and mixed community based organization (CBO), each of which manages a seasonal floodplain wetland. The two CBOs in which women hold key positions are in Hindu communities where more women use aquatic resources, work for an income, and belong to other local institutions. In the oldest of these CBOs, more women have gradually become office bearers as their recognition in the community has grown. In the Muslim community, only a few women collect aquatic resources and in this community most women do not perceive floodplain natural resource constraints to be very...

Mudanças na esfera do trabalho: novos modelos de produção e comunicação AgEcon
Siqueira, Euler David de.
Descartes’ thought in the 17th century announces the dawning of Modern Age. One of his heritages was the notion that we could get to know further about nature, reducing the complex to its simplest parts. This form of thinking has made us see reality as one made up of parts. The explanation of such parts would enable us to number, ordenate and understand the all. The stratification and hierarchyzation of what one calls society in parts, similar to an organism or as a system formed by economy, communication, language, religion, politics, State, rights, has fomented the idea that such spheres find themselves separated, whereas they are not in fact. This article means to develop the idea that social reality, when seen as a whole, may be able to gather together...

Two Dimensions of the Spatial Distribution of Housing: Dependency and Heterogeneity across Tennessee’s Six Metropolitan Statistical Areas AgEcon
Cho, Seong-Hoon; Clark, Christopher D.; Park, William M..
A two-stage multinomial logit selection model is used to model the relationship between demographic characteristics and housing density across Tennessee’s six metropolitan statistical areas. The study finds that there is both spatial correlation and heterogeneity in the most densely populated area, has the least amount of spatial correlation among housing density at the neighborhood level, while Johnson City, which has the lowest overall housing density, has the highest degree of spatial correlation.

Bioeconomic Model of Community Incentives for Wildlife Management Before and After CAMPFIRE AgEcon
Fischer, Carolyn; Muchapondwa, Edwin; Sterner, Thomas.
This paper formulates a bioeconomic model to analyze community incentives for wildlife management under benefit-sharing programs like the Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) in Zimbabwe. Two agents influence the wildlife stock: a parks agency determines hunting quotas, and a local community chooses to either aid or discourage outside poachers. Wildlife generates revenues from hunting licenses and tourism; it also intrudes on local agriculture. We consider two benefit-sharing regimes: shares of wildlife tourism rents and shares of hunting licenses. Resource sharing does not necessarily improve community welfare or incentives for wildlife conservation. Results depend on the exact design of the benefit shares, the size of...

Necrophagous diptera associated with wild animal carcasses in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silva,Ândrio Z. da; Hoffmeister,Camila H; Anjos,Vanessa A. dos; Ribeiro,Paulo B; Krüger,Rodrigo F.
Necrophagous Diptera associated with wild animal carcasses in southern Brazil. The aim of this study was to acquire a better knowledge concerning the diversity of necrophagous Diptera that develop on wild animal carcasses. For this purpose, the decomposition of six wild animal carcasses was observed in order to collect and identify the main species of necrophagous flies associated with the decomposition process. The carcasses were found on highways near the cities of Pelotas and Capão do Leão in the initial stage of decomposition, with no significant injuries or prior larval activity. Four wild animal models were represented in this study: two specimens of Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840; two Tupinambis merianae Linnaeus, 1758; one Nothura maculosa...

Effects of habitat and landscape characteristics on medium and large mammal species richness and composition in northern Uruguay Rev. Bras. Zool.
Andrade-Núñez,María José; Aide,T. Mitchell.
The increasing world population and demand for food and other products has accelerated the conversion of natural habitats into agricultural lands, plantations and urban areas. Changes in habitat and landscape characteristics due to land-use change can have a significant effect on species presence, abundance, and distribution. Multi-scale approaches have been used to determine the proper spatial scales at which species and communities are responding to habitat transformation. In this context, we evaluated medium and large mammal species richness and composition in gallery forest (n = 10), grassland (n = 10), and exotic tree plantation (n = 10) in a region where grasslands have been converted into exotic tree plantations. We quantified mammal species...

Anurans from two high-elevation areas of Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Siqueira,Carla C; Vrcibradic,Davor; Dorigo,Thiago A; Rocha,Carlos F. D.
The anurofauna inhabiting higher montane Atlantic forest areas in southeastern Brazil, which often attain heights of more than 2000 m, is still insufficiently known. In this study, we present data on anuran species composition and abundances in two high-altitude (i.e. > 1000 m) sites within the Parque Estadual dos Três Picos (PETP), in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Field surveys were done at altitudes between 1100 and 1900 m above sea level. We recorded 35 species during our study, adding 22 records to the set of anuran species previously known to occur within the PETP. The stability of the species accumulation curve, as well as the richness estimations, showed that the sampling methodology employed and the total sampling effort were appropriate to...

Fish community structure in San Agustín Bay, Huatulco, Mexico RChHN
RAMÍREZ-GUTIÉRREZ,MARTÍN; TAPIA-GARCÍA,MARGARITO; RAMOS-SANTIAGO,EDUARDO; ULLOA,RAÚL.
San Agustín bay is one of the most important bays in the Huatulco National Park because it includes the broadest coral reef surface of this park, which supports a great diversity of fish species. The importance of the present work is that describes quantitatively, for first time, the fish assemblage of this reef area. Visual censuses were realized on transects, according to the coral reef size, on coral and rocky reefs, and coral rubble environments. 64 species, 46 genus and 29 families were registered. Seasonal variation in fish assemblage was observed; reflecting the influence of pelagic shoaling species associated with the Gulf of Tehuantepec upwelling, during the dry season. Thus species were Selar crumenophthalmus, Caranx caninus, and Sardinops...

Fire effects on a Spartina densiflora salt marsh in the floodplain of the Paraná River, Argentina RChHN
MADANES,NORA; FISCHER,SYLVIA; VICARI,RICARDO.
We studied the effects of fire on the structural attributes of a Spartina densiflora salt marsh. The study was carried out from November 1995, spring (N95S) to December 1996, late spring (D96LS). In November 1995, we installed 37 permanent plots. In January 1996, 32 of the plots were accidentally burned (B) and the remaining were not burned (NB). Vegetation on each plot was sampled seasonally, plant species were identified and cover-abundance was estimated. We analyzed and compared seasonal variations in plant species richness, diversity, composition and cover-abundance in burned and non-burned plots. In addition, we analyzed variations in biological types (forbs, graminoids) and types of life cycles (annuals, perennials) in B and NB plots before and after...

Comments on plant-herbivore-parasitoid interactions in two cerrado areas of Southern Brazil Zoologia
Caldas,Astrid; Passos,Fernando de C..
This work describes some interactions between lepidopteran larvae and braconid parasitoids on a group of plants at two sites. There was no significant difference in parasitoid diversity between the sites (Shannon index, p<0.05), and similarity was 62.5%, estimated through Sorensen's index. The diversity of hosts was also not different (p<0.05), but the similarity of host diversity was only 28.5%. This suggests that the parasitoids have strategies for maintaining similar reproduction rates, population densities and communities in areas with different potential hosts.
