Copper induces expression and methylation changes of early development genes in Crassostrea gigas embryos ArchiMer
Sussarellu, Rossana; Lebreton, Morgane; Rouxel, Julien; Akcha, Farida; Riviere, Guillaume.
Copper contamination is widespread along coastal areas and exerts adverse effects on marine organisms such as mollusks. In the Pacific oyster, copper induces severe developmental abnormalities during early life stages; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. This study aims to better understand whether the embryotoxic effects of copper in Crassostrea gigas could be mediated by alterations in gene expression, and the putative role of DNA methylation, which is known to contribute to gene regulation in early embryo development. For that purpose, oyster embryos were exposed to 4 nominal copper concentrations (0.1, 1, 10 and 20 μg L−1 Cu2+) during early development assays. Embryotoxicity was monitored through the oyster embryo-larval...

Metal bioaccumulation and metallothionein concentrations in larvae of Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Damiens, Gautier; Mouneyrac, Catherine; Quiniou, Francoise; His, Edouard; Gnassia Barelli, Mauricette; Romeo, Michèle.
Larval stages of bivalve molluscs are highly sensitive to pollutants. Oysters from a hatchery from Normandy (English Channel) were induced to spawn, and fertilized eggs were exposed to copper or cadmium for 24 h. Metal accumulation (from 0.125 to 5 mu g Cu L-1 and from 25 to 200 mu g Cd L-1) and MT concentrations were measured in larvae. Compared to controls, larvae accumulated copper and cadmium with an increase in MT concentrations particularly with cadmium (i.e. 130.96 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 12.69 mu g MT (mg protein)(-1) at 1 mu g Cu L-1 versus 23.19 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 8.92 mu g MT (mg protein)(-1) in control larvae; 334.3 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and 11.70 mu g MT (mg protein)(-1) at 200 mu g Cd L-1 versus 0.87 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and...

The effect of copper on the daily growth rate and photosynthetic efficiency of the brown macroalga Padina boergesenii OceanDocs
Pratap, H.B.; Mamboya, F.A.; Mtolera, M.S.P.; Björk, M..
The effect of copper (Cu) on the daily growth rate (DGR) and photosynthetic efficiency (PE) of the brown macroalga Padina boergesenii was studied under controlled laboratory conditions. The DGR was measured as an increase in fresh weight while the PE was measured as the ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm). Padina boegesenii were exposed to 25, 50, 100 and 500mg Cu/l for 21 days. The DGR and PE of P. boergesenii decreased significantly with an increase in copper concentration in the growth media. This study shows that copper is acutely toxic to P. boergesenii at concentrations higher than 500mg Cu/l. Low concentration of copper is toxic to P. boergesenii after a prolonged exposure of 21 days. Similarly, exposure time has a...

Algae have been used as bioindicators by having several advantages such as they have short life cycles, they can take up nutrients directly from water, they are generally easy to collect in sufficient amounts from various habitats; and they readily accumulate compounds present in seawater, making tissue analyses reliable indicators of water quality. In order to evaluate the bioremoval capability of the green alga Rhizoclonium riparium, the photosynthetic responses to heavy metal pollution under different sublethal concentrations of copper was assessed. Photosynthetic rates were significantly low (p <0.05) at low copper concentrations, between (0.01 y 10 mg/l). Maximum photosynthetic values were shown at 30 y 60 mg/l and almost cero at 150 mg/ l of Cu....

Toxicity of cadmium and copper and their effect on some biochemical parameters of marine fish mugil sheheli OceanDocs
Abou El-Naga, E.H.; El-Moselhy, K.M.; Hamed, M.A..
The present work aimed to estimate the toxicity of cadmium and copper to fingerlings of marine fish Mugil seheli, as well as the effect of different concentratios of Cd and Cu on some biochemical parameters (Aspartate and alanine transaminase enzymes, glucose, glycogen, lipid and protein) in the fish organs. 96-h LC50s of Cd and Cu were 5.36 and 1.64 ppm, respectively. Levels of aspartate and alanine transaminase were reduced within 2 days of exposure to different concentrations of Cd (2.0 and 0.5 ppm) and Cu (0.5 and 0.2 ppm) in both plasma and muscle tissue. Glucose was increased reaching the highest values after 4 days of the treatment with Cd and Cu, while muscle glycogen was increased at first days then dropped after 14 days below control level....

Etude des polluants chimiques (Cu, Fe, Zn, Cd et Hg) dans les moules (<Perna perna>) prélevées au niveau de la baie du Lévrier. OceanDocs
Dartige, A.Y..

Pre-concentration and separation of Fe (III), Co (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) by solid-phase extraction using silica modified with N-propylsalicylaldimine OceanDocs
Hamed, M.A..
N- propylsalicylaldimine based on porous silica, as ion exchanger, was used for the separation and preconcentration of Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ from surface water samples collected from eleven locations at Nile river, Mediterranean and Red seas as well as tap water of Mansoura city. The effects of pH value, time of stirring, concentration of eluting acids and some common ionic species on the separation and preconcentration of the investigated metal ions in synthetic aqueous solutions were studied. The results indicate that the optimum conditions for separation are pH = 9.0-9.5 and time of stirring = 30 min. HCl is better eluent for the investigated metal ions than HNO3 except for Fe3+. Citrate and EDTA gave severe interference on the recovery of the metal...

Toxicity of copper, mercury and lead to a marine nematode OMA
Vranken, G.; Heip, C.H.R..
Toxicity of copper, lead and mercury to the nematode <i>Diplolaimella</i> spec 1 is studied. Mortality responses obtained demonstrate high resistance to heavy metals. Population growth parameters as the intrinsic rate of natural increase and net-reproductivity are significantly depressed at copper-concentrations which cause no juvenile mortality. The lowest concentrations tested caused significant inhibition of development rate in both sexes. For this particular nematode species suppression of fecundity and developmental inhibition are more reliable criteria, determining non-exceedable limits with regard to environmental safety. Our tests show that nematode productivity may be significantly depressed at copper levels found in some areas of the...

COPPER CRISIS AND AGRICULTURAL RENAISSANCE IN ZAMBIA: AN ECONOMY-WIDE ANALYSIS AgEcon
Lofgren, Hans; Robinson, Sherman; Thurlow, James.
Zambia's strong dependence on copper exports has suppressed other tradables sectors, indicative of a Dutch disease phenomenon. The current copper crisis will have strong economic effects, possibly reversing such Dutch disease effects. We use a computable general equilibrium model built around a 1995 social accounting matrix to simulate the short- and long-run effects of two scenarios that reflect the current crisis, a 20 percent reduction in world copper prices and a complete collapse of copper mining. Compared to the short run, the long run is characterized by more flexibility in production technology and capital allocation. Both scenarios require a significant reduction in the "non-copper" trade deficit, absorption, and household consumption. The...

Assessment of micronutrient extractants from soils of Paraná, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sarto,Marcos Vinicius Mansano; Steiner,Fábio; Lana,Maria do Carmo.
In Brazil, plant-available micronutrients in the soil can be determined by several chemical extractants, the most common of which are dilute acid and chelating solutions. The purpose of this study was to assess the extractants 0.1 mol L-1 HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA for analysis of the micronutrients Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in soils from the state of Paraná. In samples from 12 soils (0-20 cm layer), wheat was planted (Triticum aestivum), grown for 42 days after emergence, and then bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for 38 days. At the end of each planting period, the soil was sampled again. All extractants tested to assess the availability of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn correlated with each other. The efficiency of the extractants HCl, Mehlich-3 and DTPA in assessing...

The effects of heavy metals on the incidence of morphological deformities in Chironomidae (Diptera) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Deliberalli,Wanessa; Cansian,Rogério L.; Pereira,Albanin A. M.; Loureiro,Rafael C.; Hepp,Luiz U.; Restello,Rozane M..
ABSTRACT Streams in urban areas are strongly impacted by the input of organic matter and metals, for instance copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). These metals are essential for the aquatic biota, but when absorbed in excess they are toxic. In Chiro nomidae larvae, the deleterious effects of heavy metals can be ascertained by analyzing the morphological deformities of the larval mentum, a structure of the oral cavity. In this study, we evaluated I) the bioavailability of Cu and Zn in urban stream sediments and II) the relationship between Cu and Zn concentrations and the incidence of deformities in the mentum of Chironomus larvae. Chironomid flies were collected from four locations in two streams at an urban area in southern Brazil. They were identified and the...

Recent advances in the study of biocorrosion: an overview Rev. Microbiol.
Beech,Iwona B.; Gaylarde,Christine C..
Biocorrosion processes at metal surfaces are associated with microorganisms, or the products of their metabolic activities including enzymes, exopolymers, organic and inorganic acids, as well as volatile compounds such as ammonia or hydrogen sulfide. These can affect cathodic and/or anodic reactions, thus altering electrochemistry at the biofilm/metal interface. Various mechanisms of biocorrosion, reflecting the variety of physiological activities carried out by different types of microorganisms, are identified and recent insights into these mechanisms reviewed. Many modern investigations have centered on the microbially-influenced corrosion of ferrous and copper alloys and particular microorganisms of interest have been the sulfate-reducing bacteria and...

Cupric citrate as growth promoter for broiler chickens in different rearing stages Scientia Agricola
Brainer,Mônica Maria de Almeida; Menten,José Fernando Machado; Vale,Marcos Martinez do; Morais,Sônia Cristina Daroz de.
Feeding cupric citrate as alternative to cupric sulfate to broilers has been suggested in the literature. Day-old male broiler chicks (1,200) were used in an experiment to evaluate the efficacy of cupric citrate supplementation (75 mg Cu kg-1) during the 1-21, 22-42 or 1-42 d periods in comparison to an unsupplemented diet and a diet supplemented with cupric sulfate (200 mg Cu kg-1, 1-42 d). A randomized block design was used, with five treatments, six replicates and 40 birds per pen. The diets, based on corn and soybean meal, and water were offered ad libitum during the 42-day experimental period. Over the entire period, there was no effect of copper supplementation (P > 0.05) on bird live weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and...

Copper desorption in a soil with variable charge Scientia Agricola
Casagrande,José Carlos; Jordão,Camila Beig; Alleoni,Luís Reynaldo Ferracciú; Camargo,Otávio Antônio de.
Adsorption processes of heavy metals in soils have been more extensively studied than desorption, in spite of this latter process being related to nutrient bioavailability in the soil solution. Copper desorption from surface (0-0.2 m) and subsurface (1.0 - 1.2 m) samples of an Anionic Acrudox was studied at two pH values (4.5 and 7.5). Soil samples were incubated with Cu rates varying from 0 to 400 mg kg-1, during 4 and 12 weeks, in the presence of CaCl2 as support electrolyte at concentrations of 0.01 and 0.001 mol L-1. Complete soil adsorption of added Cu was observed at pH 7.5 in all incubation periods, indicating that a 24h-shaking period was enough to reach equilibrium and maximum adsorption. Copper adsorption varied with the incubation period and was...

Effect of liming on micronutrient availability to soybean grown in soil under different lengths of time under no tillage Agronomy
Moreira, Silvino Guimarães; Prochnow, Luís Ignácio; Pauletti, Volnei; Silva, Bruno Montoani; Kiehl, Jorge de Castro; Silva, Carine Gregório Machado.
The effect of liming on the availability of micronutrients to soybean cultivated during different numbers of years under no tillage (NT) was investigated. The treatments consisted of the number of years under NT (three, six, and nine years) and five rates of lime (0, 33, 67 and 100% of the amount calculated to raise soil base saturation to 70%) broadcast on soil surface plus the rate of 100% broadcast with incorporation in the 0-0.20 m layer of a clayey Red Oxisol. Soil and leaf samples were collected at two vegetative stages of the crop (vegetative V4 and blossoming R2). The soil was sampled at depths of 0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, and 0.20-0.30 m. Surface liming had little effect on extractable soil micronutrient and nutrient concentrations in soybean...
