Fish community structure in San Agustín Bay, Huatulco, Mexico RChHN
RAMÍREZ-GUTIÉRREZ,MARTÍN; TAPIA-GARCÍA,MARGARITO; RAMOS-SANTIAGO,EDUARDO; ULLOA,RAÚL.
San Agustín bay is one of the most important bays in the Huatulco National Park because it includes the broadest coral reef surface of this park, which supports a great diversity of fish species. The importance of the present work is that describes quantitatively, for first time, the fish assemblage of this reef area. Visual censuses were realized on transects, according to the coral reef size, on coral and rocky reefs, and coral rubble environments. 64 species, 46 genus and 29 families were registered. Seasonal variation in fish assemblage was observed; reflecting the influence of pelagic shoaling species associated with the Gulf of Tehuantepec upwelling, during the dry season. Thus species were Selar crumenophthalmus, Caranx caninus, and Sardinops...

Mycale alagoana sp.nov. and two new formal records of Porifera (Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida) from the shallow-water reefs of Alagoas (Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Cedro,Victor Ribeiro; Hajdu,Eduardo; Correia,Monica Dorigo.
The Porifera occurring at Alagoas State reefs (north-eastern Brazil) are still little-known, with few species listed and even fewer formally described. From a total of 48 species recorded from the state, only eight belong to the Poecilosclerida, including those (re)described in this study. Here we describe a new species, Mycale (Mycale) alagoana sp.nov., and redescribe two species: Lissodendoryx (Lissodendoryx) isodictyalis (Carter, 1882) and Mycale (Naviculina) diversisigmata Van Soest, 1984, both first formal redescriptions from the Southwestern Atlantic. Additionally, Mycale (Aegogropila) escarlatei Hajdu et al., 1995 is here reported from Alagoas for the first time, in discussing the difficulties inherent to recognition in the field of small crustose...

Evaluation of the community structure of marine sponges in reef patches of the southern Caribbean, Costa Rica Boletín de Investigaciones
Araya-Vargas,Alexander; Busutil,Linnet; García-Rojas,Andrea; Pereira-Chaves,José Miguel; Piedra-Castro,Liliana.
ABSTRACT Marine sponges fulfill many critical functions to coral reefs. In turn, variations in the community structure of the poriferans may indicate changes in the environmental conditions of the ecosystems where they live. However, their study has been scarce in the Caribbean of Costa Rica, mainly in the ecological field. Therefore, the community structure of these organisms was evaluated in four reef patches (Perezoso, Pequeño, Coral Garden, and the 0.36) and it was determined whether it could be explained by sedimentation, substrate, and depth. Relative abundance (RA) and relative coverage (RC) for each species, sponge density, and diversity indices (species richness, Shannon heterogeneity, Pielou's evenness, and Simpson's dominance) were calculated...

First record of the lion’s paw sea-cucumber Euapta godeffroyi Semper, 1868 (Holothuroidea: Apodida: Synaptidae) in Gorgona Island, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Londoño-Cruz,Edgardo.
ABSTRACT Holothurians correspond to 20-25 % of all known species of echinoderms. In the Colombian Pacific, 34 species have been recorded, of which 11 have been recorded on Gorgona Island. This is the first report of the lion’s paw sea-cucumber Euapta godeffroyi on the island. The specimen was collected by scuba diving in the subtidal coralline patch known locally as El Arrecifito del Muelle, at a depth of approximately 2 m. It was about 80 cm long and between 2 and 3 cm in diameter. The ossicles of the body wall basically correspond to anchors and anchor plates; the latter have tiny ramifications at the base of the central axis. The present report fills a gap in the distribution of this species for the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
