Bayesian genetic parameters for body weight and survival of Nile tilapia farmed in Brazil PAB
Santos,Alexandra Inês; Ribeiro,Ricardo Pereira; Vargas,Lauro; Mora,Freddy; Alexandre Filho,Luiz; Fornari,Darci Carlos; Oliveira,Sheila Nogueira de.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for survival and weight of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), farmed in cages and ponds in Brazil, and to predict genetic gain under different scenarios. Survival was recorded as a binary response (dead or alive), during harvest time in the 2008 grow-out period. Genetic parameters were estimated using a Bayesian mixed linear-threshold animal model via Gibbs sampling. The breeding population consisted of 2,912 individual fish, which were analyzed together with the pedigree of 5,394 fish. The heritabilities estimates, with 95% posterior credible intervals, for tagging weight, harvest weight and survival were 0.17 (0.09-0.27), 0.21 (0.12-0.32) and 0.32 (0.22-0.44), respectively. Credible...

Reliability of breeding values between random regression and 305-day lactation models PAB
Padilha,Alessandro Haiduck; Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Daltro,Darlene dos Santos; Braccini Neto,José.
Abstract The objective of this work was to verify the gain in reliability of estimated breeding values (EBVs), when random regression models are applied instead of conventional 305-day lactation models, using fat and protein yield records of Brazilian Holstein cattle for future genetic evaluations. Data set contained 262,426 test-day fat and protein yield records, and 30,228 fat and protein lactation records at 305 days from first lactation. Single trait random regression models using Legendre polynomials and single trait lactation models were applied. Heritability for 305-day yield from lactation models was 0.24 (fat) and 0.17 (protein), and from random regression models was 0.20 (fat) and 0.21 (protein). Spearman correlations of EBVs, between lactation...

Speaking Stata: Correlation with confidence, or Fisher's z revisited AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Ronald Aylmer Fisher suggested transforming correlations by using the inverse hyperbolic tangent, or atanh function, a device often called Fisher’s z transformation. This article reviews that function and its inverse, the hyperbolic tangent, or tanh function, with discussions of their definitions and behavior, their use in statistical inference with correlations, and how to apply them in Stata. Examples show the use of Stata and Mata in calculator style. New commands corrci and corrcii are also presented for correlation confidence intervals. The results of using bootstrapping to produce confidence intervals for correlations are also compared. Various historical comments are sprinkled throughout.

Techniques for Multivariate Simulation from Mixed Marginal Distributions with Application to Whole-Farm Revenue Simulation AgEcon
Anderson, John D.; Harri, Ardian; Coble, Keith H..
Alternative techniques for representing dependencies among variables in multivariate simulation are discussed and compared in the context of rating a whole-farm insurance product. A procedure by lman and Conover (IC) that is common in actuarial applications is compared to a new technique detailed by Phoon, Quek, and Huang (PQHl. Results suggest that rates derived from the IC procedure may be inaccurate because the procedure produces biased estimates of correlation between simulated variables. This situation is improved with the PQH procedure.

A kukorica és a vágósertés felvásárlási árának és mennyiségének ciklikussága AgEcon
Hegedusne Baranyai, Nora.
A vizsgálatok a rendszerváltozást követő időszakra vonatkozó piaci folyamatok – árak, felvásárolt mennyiségek – havi változásainak elemzésére irányultak. A ciklikus periódusok hossza 3-4 évre tehető. A vágósertésnél szintén öt ciklus rajzolódott ki a vizsgált időszakban. A hullámok hossza változó volt. A sertésáraknál a leghosszabbnak az utolsó előtti tekinthető, a maga három és fél évével. Vizsgálat tárgyát képezte a vonatkozó tényezők sztochasztikus...

An Insurance Approach to Risk Management in the Ethanol Industry AgEcon
Paulson, Nicholas D.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Hart, Chad E.; Hayes, Dermot J..
The vast majority of crop and revenue insurance policies sold in the United States are single-crop policies that insure against low yields or revenues for each crop grown on the farm. But, increasingly, producer income is based more on the value of crops that have been converted into a value-added product such as ethanol. Moreover, the recent increases in energy and com-modity price levels and volatilities emphasize the importance of risk management to ethanol investors. This paper uses an insurance approach to outline a risk management tool which mimics the gross margin level of a typical corn-based ethanol plant. The gross margin, pre-mium, and indemnity levels are calculated on a per bushel basis to enable producers/investors to utilize the product...

Assessment of micronutrient extractants from soils of Paraná, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sarto,Marcos Vinicius Mansano; Steiner,Fábio; Lana,Maria do Carmo.
In Brazil, plant-available micronutrients in the soil can be determined by several chemical extractants, the most common of which are dilute acid and chelating solutions. The purpose of this study was to assess the extractants 0.1 mol L-1 HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA for analysis of the micronutrients Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in soils from the state of Paraná. In samples from 12 soils (0-20 cm layer), wheat was planted (Triticum aestivum), grown for 42 days after emergence, and then bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for 38 days. At the end of each planting period, the soil was sampled again. All extractants tested to assess the availability of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn correlated with each other. The efficiency of the extractants HCl, Mehlich-3 and DTPA in assessing...

Biometric Responses of Soybean to Different Potassium Fertilization Management Practices in Years with High and Low Precipitation Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Esper Neto,Michel; Minato,Evandro Antonio; Besen,Marcos Renan; Inoue,Tadeu Takeyoshi; Batista,Marcelo Augusto.
ABSTRACT Brazilian soybean producers commonly apply maintenance potassium (K) fertilization during cultivation to restore the K taken up by plants; however, this measure can modify the morphophysiological plant characteristics, since the functions of K are closely related with plant growth and development. This study assessed the morphological changes in soybean plants in response to K rates, sowing fertilization, and the application periods of K fertilization in a Latossolo Vermelho eutroférrico (Oxisol) under a no-tillage system, located in the municipality of Floresta, Paraná. A randomized block design was used in the experiment with four replications in a fully crossed factorial design (5 × 2 × 2). The experiment was carried out in two growing seasons...

Kramer,Luiz Fernando Machado; Müller,Marcelo Marques Lopes; Tormena,Cássio Antônio; Michalovicz,Leandro; Nascimento,Ronaldo do; Vicensi,Marcelo.
Soil management influences the chemical and physical properties of soil. Chemical conditions have been thoroughly studied, while the role of soil physical conditions regarding crop yield has been neglected. This study aimed to analyze the wheat yield and its relationship with physical properties of an Oxisol under no-tillage (NT). The study was carried out between 2010 and 2011, in Reserva do Iguaçu, State of Paraná, Brazil, on the Campo Bonito farm, after 25 years of NT management. Based on harvest maps of barley (2006), wheat (2007) and maize (2009) of a plot (150 ha), zones with higher and lower yield potential (Z1 and Z2, respectively) were identified. Sampling grids with 16 units (50 x 50 m) and three sampling points per unit were established. The...

Controlling factors of ‘Caatinga’ and sugarcane evapotranspiration in the Sub-middle São Francisco Valley AGRIAMBI
Carvalho,Herica F. de S.; Moura,Magna S. B. de; Silva,Thieres G. F. da; Rodrigues,Carlos T. A..
ABSTRACT In the Sub-middle São Francisco Valley, the main controlling factors of ‘Caatinga’ and irrigated sugarcane ETr were investigated in this study. Between 2015 and 2016, environmental variables were measured by sensors coupled to two micrometeorological towers, one in the preserved ‘Caatinga’ and the other in an irrigated sugarcane crop. Soil moisture and vegetation cover index were also evaluated and biometric data were obtained only in the sugarcane. Actual evapotranspiration was determined based on the latent heat flux, by the energy balance method. Therefore, the ratio between actual and reference evapotranspiration was calculated. Response variables were formed by the actual evapotranspiration and by its ratio with the reference...

Radiation balance of coffee hedgerows AGRIAMBI
Angelocci,Luiz R.; Marin,Fábio R.; Pilau,Felipe G.; Righi,Evandro Z.; Favarin,José L..
The radiation balance of hedgerows is an important variable in studies of mass and energy exchanges between parcial ground cover crops and the atmosphere. This paper describes a device with eight net radiometers encompassing the plants of a hedgerow. The radiometers were moved along a length of hedgerow, in a continuous and reversible movement. The canopy net radiation in this length (Rnc) was found by integration of the measurements over the notional cylinder formed. The device showed good performance and provided reliable measurements of Rnc of coffee hedgerows, showing itselfto be an useful technique of measurement in field conditions. Good correlations between Rnc and global solar radiation, turfgrass and coffee crop net radiation were found in 15-min,...

Morphometric study of Phragmatopoma caudata (Polychaeta: Sabellida: Sabellariidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Occhioni,Gisele E.; Brasil,Ana C. S.; Araújo,Alexandre F. B..
The sabellariid Phragmatopoma caudata (Kroyer, 1856), Morch, 1863 is widely distributed in the Americas and constructs large reef agglomerates that provide substrates for other benthic species. However, the difficulty in obtaining size data (especially length) hampers population studies, making it necessary to carry out morphometric studies as basis for studies of population dynamics. The objective of the present study is to determine the best morphological descriptor of length in P. caudata. A total of 17 morphometric variables were measured in specimens from four different populations. Measurements were performed using an ocular micrometer attached to a stereoscopic microscope. Correlations in the dataset were tested using Pearson's linear correlation...
