Organic farming is challenged by perennial weeds such as Canada thistle. The increasing CO2 concentration levels causing temperature increase may lead to an increased photosynthesis and as a consequence elevated storage in underground perennating organs. In this study, we analyzed fructan, the main storage in Canada thistle, in juvenile and mature plants treated with different temperatures. Low temperatures caused higher concentrations of fructan in four weeks old plants. Proximal root fragments had higher amount of fructan than distal fragments. Regenerative ability from roots with different fructan concentrations was also associated to temperature and age. This implies that the timing of root fragmentation in autumn should occur earliest four weeks... |

Feed value in form of FEsv (Feed unit / kg dry matter, for piglets) and FEso (Feed unit / kg dry matter, for sows), EDOM (Enzyme Degradable Organic Matter) and EDOMi (Enzyme Degradable Organic Matter, Ileum) is used in the feed evaluation system for pigs. Analysis of feed value have highlighted that there is a significant variation between varieties as well as due to an environmental variation between regions and the harvest year. The chemical analysis is, however, time-consuming and costly, and it is therefore desirable to have a rapid and less expensive method, which makes it possible to carry out more analyses in-situ. |

A tree is known by its fruits and a man by his achievements. Dr Phalguni Das Biswas is a scientist with a difference as his inventive genius could find its meaningful expression in delivering a quintessential system that provides a healing touch to the prevailing unstable agriculture by restricting productivity depletion, ecosystem pollution and food toxicity. He has published over 40 articles in international journals like Central European Journal of Experimental Biology and The International Journal of Science and Technology. There is a happy marriage of modern science with his repository wisdom of Vedic philosophy and its logical sublimation. His brain child Inhana Rational Farming (IRF) technology is the only technology in the organic world. More... |

In intercropping, more than one crop species are cultivated simultaneously on the same piece of land, to promote interaction between species. To determine the effects on yield performance of intercropping of legumes and cereals, a meta analysis has been set up based on data from publications on this kind of field trials as found from an extensive search on Web-of Science. The effect of intercropping has been assessed by comparing yield in pure stand and in the intercrop of each species. Two measures were considered : i) The LER (Land Equivalent Ratio), which is a simple way to compare the pure yield with the intercropping yield by a sum of ratios and ii) the overall effect decomposed into sum of a ”selection effect” and a ”complementary effect” (Loreau... |

Gantry technology in organic crop production Winfried Schäfer Agrifood Research Finland, Agricultural Engineering Research, winfried.schafer@mtt.fi Objectives: Costs of agricultural machinery and farm buildings are substantial, comprising about 40% of production costs also in organic farming. What are the tasks of agricultural machinery and agricultural engineering research in organic farming? Which agricultural engineering results support the basic principles of organic farming? Hypothesis: Future agricultural engineering for organic farming embraces three essential areas: support of animal welfare, use of renewable energy, and strengthening sustainable crop production. Modern gantry technology offers ideal support for organic crop production... |

The residual effect of cutting and grazing during the growing season was investigated in the spring and summer growth in an organic crop rotation with 1-4 year-old grass-clover mixtures of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) either with or without red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and with and without slurry. The white clover mixtures had significantly higher yields in spring and summer in swards that were previously grazed compared to previously cut swards, when slurry was applied. The percentage of white clover in spring was considerably reduced by previous grazing and this caused the yield response of slurry application to be highest following grazing. A similar effect on the clover content was not found in the... |

Karnataka state is a state of India with diverse agro-climatic zones. In 2001 it had a population of 53 million and 66% of population habitants living in villages. Agriculture is still major occupation in the rural areas of Karnataka and more than 90% of rural people are dependent on agriculture and agro-industries. However irregular rainfall patterns, pest attacks and poor nutrient management are resulting more frequently in crop failures. This has resulted in agrarian distress as with crop failures, farmers are unable to repay the loans. The government of Karnataka introduced Karnataka state policy of organic farming to decrease agrarian distress. In order to asses the impacts of this policy on agriculture, economic and ecological... |

One core idea behind organic production is that cropping systems should be less dependent on resource import than conventional production and minimize negative environmental effects. This study aimed to test novel organic rotations, designed to reduce reliance on external resource import. We compared a conventional system (C) and an organic system relying on manure import (O1) to two rotations (O2 and O3), both relying on autumn cover crops for soil fertility, and in O3 green manure rows were left as intercrops. Resource import differed between 149, 85, 25 and 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 in C, O1, O2 and O3. Crop yields were lower in the organic systems (on average 82% of conventional yields), differing among crops, when based on the area grown with main crops.... |
