OceanDocs
Martini, L..
Fishing activities with trawl nets used by the commercial fleet in the continental slope of the Southwest Atlantic are quite different from those developed in the Argentine shelf because, in the former, depths are very variable and slopes are more marked: therefore, fishing procedures are quite different. In this work, the most important differences are described: fish species, fishing gear, type of vessel and machinery on deck, as well as the training and experience of skippers.

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D.; Hansen, J.E.; Cassia, M.C..
The current status of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis stock is described. A single, closed fish population is assumed to inhabit the SW Atlantic. Based on catch data corresponding to years 1987-1997, a sequential analysis on the stock is carried out (Cohort Analysis). Under an adaptative framework, catch per unit of effort data from commercial vessels are used to fit the model. Two commercial fleets are used in the fitting, i.e. Polish vessels (1987-1994)and Argentine surimi factory vessels (1991-1997). Results indicate that both, total stock biomass and spawning stock biomass would have declined. Total biomass would have decreased from a maximum close to 1.4 million tons in 1990 down to 0.5 mt in 1997 whereas the current spawning stock...

342 specimens of sparid Calamus brachysomus ”Palma”, collected during a demersal trawl survey by the R. V. Tohallí in April and May1983, were examined. The different techniques used to prepare scales and otoliths for ageing are described and analysed. The otoliths were determined to be the most reliable for ageing studies; 87% of otoliths were readable. The rings observed were assumed to be annual. The mean lengths at age were used to determine the parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth formula, giving: Lt=50.13(1-e-0.1473(t+2.0704)). The growth curve obtained must be considered provisional due to possible biases in the interpretation of the otoliths, and also due to those arising from the selectivity of the fishing gear.

A survey of demersal fish resources of the Continental Shelf of Ecuador was carried out between October 1980 an July 1985 by the National Fisheries Institute of Ecuador, with British Technical Cooperation. This report deals with the stock assessment part of the work. In the course of seven cruises, 366 valid diurnal hauls were made with a high-opening bottom trawl. The demersal fish resources were estimated by swept area methods and the results are presented. The overall average standing stock of demersal fish was 78 000 t of which 22 000 t was good fish, but 36 000 t were gurnards (Triglidae) and 3 000 t of unusable fish. The main stocks were gurnards, grunts and croakers, sharks and corvinas Cynoscion spp. The southern areas especially the Gulf of...

In the paper presented, comparisons are made between 12 species of small demersal fish (less than 30 cm O.L.) commonly found in the shrimp by-catch. Each species is described, estimates are made as to their relative abundance and fishery and complete data are presented on processing: filets, deboned minces. Taste panel work was carried out on cooked fillets as well as products made from the deboned mince and chemical analyses were made on all the species. The possibility of future increased utilization of these species is discussed.

Wöhler, O.C.; Hansen, J.E.; Cassia, M.C.; Cordo, H.D..
Period 1987-2001. A diagnosis of the current state of Southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) stock in the Southwest Atlantic was carried out on the basis of catches corresponding to the period 1987-2001 as reported by the Argentine fleet and also by vessels operating around Malvinas Islands. Abundance and current fishing mortality rates were estimated, and the biomass evolution in the long term resulting from some possible exploitation strategies based on different management strategies were projected. A sequential population analysis calibrated under a conceptual adjustable framework with five independent abundance indices was carried out. The effects on the biomass estimates were analysed by adopting different selection patterns and calibration...

Inejih, C.A.O..

The stock estimates obtained during the demersal fish resources survey in 1980-1985 were used to estimate the potential yields of demersal stocks of the Ecuadorian Continental Shelf. The difficulties of predicting yields for multispecies fisheries are discussed and modified version of the Gulland model was adopted. The potential realizable yields for multispecies fisheries are discussed and a modified version of the Gulland model was adopted. The potential realizable yield was calculated to be between 15,000 t and 20,000 t per year, of which 2,000 t is good quality fish, 5,000 t per year of small and medium fish and 8,000 t of gurnards. The majority of these resources are at present being fished at around their optimum levels and any further developments...
