THE INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA IN RAINBOW TROUT (ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS) IS INFLUENCED BY DIET TYPE AND YERSINIA RUCKERI CHALLENGE Organic Eprints
Ingerslev, Hans-Christian; Dalsgaard, Inger; Jørgensen, Louise von Gersdorff; Madsen, Lone.
In recent years it has become more and more evident that the bacterial flora in the gut of warm-blooded animals modulates physiological processes and the immunological status of the host. Besides effects on growth parameters, commensal intestinal bacteria balance the immune system and prevent colonization of pathogenic bacteria. The question is if the gut microbiota is also important in lower vertebrates such as fish? Is the microbiota related to the diet type and does it play a protective role in connection to pathogenic challenge? To examine these questions rainbow trout fry were fed two different diets of either a marine or vegetable origin from first feeding and onwards. At a size of about four gram the fish were bath challenged by Yersinia ruckeri...

Opinions on biogas in organic farming Organic Eprints
Heiske, Stefan; Østergård, Hanne.
The application of biogas technologies in organic farming involves many considerations: Benefits like improved fertilizer supply and fossil fuel savings are opposed to concerns about economical risks and incompliance with organic principles. A questionnaire developed by Risø DTU gives an idea about some Danish stakeholders’ perceptions of benefits and drawbacks.

Organic farming systems benefit biodiversity and natural pest regulation in white cabbage Organic Eprints
Meyling, N.V.; Navntoft, S.; Eilenberg, J..
Natural regulation of cabbage root flies works well in experimental organic cropping systems of white cabbage. Low input and complex organic systems benefit functional biodiversity by providing good living conditions to several groups of natural enemies. Intercropped green manure benefits large predators while small predatory beetles favour low input organic systems with bare soil between crop rows.

DIET TYPE AND CHALLENGE BY YERSINIA RUCKERI INFLUENCE THE INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA IN RAINBOW TROUT (ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS) Organic Eprints
Ingerslev, Hans-Christian; Dalsgaard, Inger; Jørgensen, Louise von Gersdorff; Madsen, Lone.
In warm-blooded animals such as humans and pigs the intestinal microbial composition is dependent on the type of ingested diet. It is known that it also influences the immune system and prevent colonization of pathogenic bacteria. The question is if the gut microbiota has the same impact in lower vertebrates such as fish? To examine this rainbow trout fry were fed two different diets of either a marine or vegetable origin. At a size of about four gram a subset of the fish was bath challenged by Yersinia ruckeri serotype O1 and intestines were then sampled 5 days post challenge from challenged fish (n = 40) and non-challenged control fish (n = 40). Subsequent metagenomic examination based on the 16S rDNA gene was then performed using the Illumina HiSeq...

Does organic food intervention in the Danish schools lead to change dietary patterns? - results of a web based questionnaire survey among Danish school food coordinators Organic Eprints
He, Chen; Mikkelsen, Bent Egberg.
Now, more than ever, there are serious health concerns for the growing prevalence of obese and overweight children. Schools are well suited setting for the learning of children and young people, and this influence has the potential to play an important role in preventing children from becoming obese and overweight. The school at the same time is the focus of public organic food supply strategies as well as the focus of innovation strategies that can increase the availability of healthier food options. These strategies in some cases go hand in hand. The purpose of this research was to examine whether organic food intervention strategies in school meal system could support the development of healthier eating patterns among children and adolescents. An...

Får økologiske forbrugere oftere 6 om dagen? Organic Eprints
Denver, Sigrid; Christensen, Tove; Krarup, Signe.
Får økologiske forbrugere oftere 6 om dagen? Ja!

Spatial variation in the localization of Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Conversion to organic farming shows a large variation at the county level in Denmark. This is attributed to proximity to urban markets and values, regional specialization of farm types and municipal promotion of organic farming. However, also at the local level there is a substantial variation in the localization of organic farms. This may be related to negative influences of social barriers and positive influences of fiery souls among producers and advisors.

Research in Organic Food and Farming. Reports on organisation and conduction of research programmes in 11 European countries Organic Eprints
This publication represents reports on the organization and conduction of research programmes in 11 European countries involved in the ERA-NET/1/CA-SSA-B No 011716 ”CORE Organic” (Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Food and Farming, Project no 011716). This publication evolved as a comprehensive project output but it is not a deliverable as such. Due to the genesis of research in Organic Food & Farming the present scientific resources in Europe are still scattered. A cross-border aggregation of these resources will help to reach a higher relevance of organic agriculture and a fortifi cation of the involved benefi ts for rural development, environment and consumers. These benefits are more and more acknowledged by policy...

The Lost History of Organic Farming in Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
It has not been previously reported that the world’s first “organic” farming society was the Australian Organic Farming and Gardening Society (AOFGS) which was founded in Australia in October 1944. The association was based in Sydney, New South Wales, and the first issue of its journal, the Organic Farming Digest (OFD), was dated April 1946. This was Australia’s first, and the world’s second, “organic” farming journal. The eighteen month delay between the founding of the society and the first publication of the journal was because paper was unavailable in Australia for that purpose during WWII. The society published a total of 378 articles in 29 issues from 1946 to 1954. Articles from Australia, UK, USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany and Denmark were...

Eco-Labelling, the State and Consumer Confidence Organic Eprints
Sønderskov, Kim Mannemar; Daugbjerg, Carsten.
Trustworthy eco-labels provide consumers with valuable information on environmentally friendly products and thus promote green consumerism. But what makes an eco-label trustworthy and what can government do to increase consumer confidence? The scant existing literature seems to argue that low governmental involvement increases confidence. According to this, government should just provide the basic legal framework for eco-labelling and leave the rest to non-governmental organizations. However, the empirical underpinning of this recommendation is insufficient. This paper analyses consumer confidence in different organic food labelling regimes with varying degrees of governmental involvement. Using unique and detailed survey data from USA, United Kingdom,...

Presentation: Comparing reasons for opting out inAustria, Denmark, Estonia and Norway Organic Eprints
Koesling, Matthias; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
While the number of organic farms was rising rapidly in almost all European Countries since the beginning of the 1990s, some organic farmers were opting out of certified organic farming the later years. For farmers in Estonia and Denmark, unsatisfactory economic results were named as dominating reason for opting out. In Denmark these problems were mainly due to marketing problems. Other important reasons in Estonia were too much bureaucracy, difficulties to fit animal production to the regulations and difficulties in weed control. Difficult and changing regulations, getting stricter over time, were mentioned most frequently by Norwegian and Austrian farmers and also important for those in Denmark.

Jokumsen, Alfred; Larsen, Villy J.; Dalsgaard, Inger; Nielsen, Henrik Hauch; Jessen, Peter; Kold, John.

The character of demand in mature organic food markets: Great Britain and Denmark compared Organic Eprints
Wier, Mette; O'Doherty Jensen, Katherine; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Millock, Katrin; Rosenkvist, Lars.
We investigate the organic food market in two selected European countries, Great Britain and Denmark, identifying main differences and similarities. We focus particularly on consumer preferences and priorities, labelling schemes, supply and sales channels, as a basis for assessing market stability and prospects for future growth. We employ a unique set of household panel data that includes information on stated values and concerns, as well as registered purchasing behaviour. Most organic food on both markets is produced and processed by large-scale industrialised units and distributed through concentrated mainstream sales channels, consumer confidence being sustained at present by organic labelling schemes that appear to function well. However, a parallel...
