Since 1991, high mortality rates of larvae and juveniles of different bivalve mollusc species associated with herpesvirus infections have been reported in different countries. The aim of this study was to determine if more than one helpesvirus species was responsible for these infections or just one species exhibiting polymorphism. The investigations concentrated on the analysis of the virus genome, studies of virus transmission in different mollusc species and on the potential role of bivalve adults in the occurrence of infections. Among the marine molluscs, Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is actually the most reared species in the world. Noticeably in France, where it was imported between 1960 and 1970, and replaced Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata. Intensification of breeding and the associated introductions of new species may be hazardous. Indeed, they might be responsible for the appearance and the dissemination of new diseases in bivalve molluscs. Ces derniers par leur morphologie, leur cycle de réplication et leur localisation ont été apparentés à la famille des Herpesviridae. Molecular identification of Vibrio tapetis, the causative agent of the brown ring disease of Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer

Incubation-based methods available for the detection and quantification of seed-borne inoculum such as the blotter test, paper roll and Neon-S assay are time-consuming, laborious, and not always sensitive. In this study, we developed and evaluated a molecular assay for the detection of S. sclerotiorum in soybean seeds using a species-specific PCR (polymerase chain reaction) primer set and seed soaking (without DNA extraction) for up to 72 h. Development and Evaluation of an Indirect ELISA: Serological Survey to Detect Specific Antibodies to Bovine Herpesvirus 4 BABT

ABSTRACTThe aim of this work was to develop and evaluate an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and made a serological screening for specific antibodies to BoHV-4. Bovine serum samples were collected from different Brazilian states and evaluated for the presence of antibodies for BoHV-4 and BoHV-1. The serological results obtained showed that the indirect ELISA assay could be applied for the detection of specific antibodies for BoHV-4. The ELISA test allowed concluding that BoHV-4 is present in bovines in every Brazilian state from which serum samples were collected. The ELISA assay here standardized proved to be useful for the epidemiological studies and showed a positivity range from 1.8 to 66% in Brazil.

Molecular epidemiology of the human group A rotavirus in the Paraná State, Brazil BABT

From January/2000 to December/2003, 550 diarrheic fecal samples from the children and adults were collected in several geographical regions of Paraná State, Brazil. The enzyme immunoassay showed 120 (21.8%) samples positive for the group A rotaviruses. One hundred and fourteen samples were genotyped by multiplex-nested-PCR assay. The highest frequency (77.5%) of the positive samples (n=93) was observed in the children under 5 years old. Rotavirus diarrhea was more frequent in the cold and dry seasons of the four evaluated years. The most frequent genotypes were: G1 (50.9%), G4 (9.6%), G9 (7.0%), G2 (1.7%), G3 (0.9%), P[ 8] (71.9%), and P[ 4] (3.5%).
