Toxin content of Ostreopsis cf. ovata depends on bloom phases, depth and macroalgal substrate in the NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

Over the last fifteen years, blooms of the genus Ostreopsis have been reported more frequently and at higher abundances in the Mediterranean area. Ostreopsis cf. ovata is known to produce ovatoxins (OVTXs), structural analogues of palytoxin, which is one of the most potent non-polymeric toxins. However, the production of OVTXs is poorly characterized in situ. The present study focuses on toxin content and profile according to the bloom phase during summer 2017 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France (NW Mediterranean Sea), depth (from 0.5 to 5 m) and three different macroalgal substrates of this epiphytic dinoflagellate (Padina pavonica, Dictyota spp. and Halopteris scoparia). Processes leading to the coexistence of a host and its parasitoid in homogeneous environments: The role of an infected dormant stage ArchiMer

Theoretical studies have usually been used to explain host–parasitoid persistence in conditions of spatial heterogeneity or in homogeneous environments with specific conditions. In shallow estuaries where spatial heterogeneity is prevented by tides and river input, a common host–parasitoid system (dinoflagellate-Amoebophrya spp.) is able to persist even in the absence of specific conditions described in the literature. Recent observations have revealed that the cyst stage (during which the dinoflagellate host can survive in difficult environmental conditions in a dormant stage) can be infected by the parasitoid. Morphology, ultrastructure and molecular phylogeny of Wangodinium sinense gen. et sp. nov. (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) and revisiting of Gymnodinium dorsalisulcum and Gymnodinium impudicum ArchiMer

The genus Gymnodinium includes many morphologically similar species, but molecular phylogenies show that it is polyphyletic. Eight strains of Gymnodinium impudicum, Gymnodinium dorsalisulcum and a novel Gymnodinium‐like species from Chinese and Malaysian waters and the Mediterranean Sea were established. All of these strains were examined with LM, SEM and TEM. SSU, LSU and internal transcribed spacers rDNA sequences were obtained. A new genus, Wangodinium, was erected to incorporate strains with a loop‐shaped apical structure complex (ASC) comprising two rows of amphiesmal vesicles, here referred to as a new type of ASC. Modélisation des blooms de Gymnodinium mikimotoï le long de la façade atlantique française : répartition spatiale ArchiMer

In order to study the occurrence of Gymnodinium mikimotoï bloom on the French Atlantic coast, a three-dimensional model of primary production was set up. The biological model was coupled to a hydrodynamic model previously developed at Ifremer, by the intermediary of transport, diffusion and heat fluxes. The cycles of three limiting elements for the phytoplankton growth were modelised: nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon. The second phase of the study aimed at reproducing the summer dinoflagellate blooms. In this new approach a model of the species Gymnodinium mikimotoï was coupled with the previous biomass model which provides the physical and chemical environments. The dinoflagellate order Peridiniales encompasses several well circumscribed families. However, the family level of some genera, such as Bysmatrum and Vulcanodinium, has remained elusive for many years. Four Peridinium-like strains were established from the Atlantic coast of France and North Sulawesi, Indonesia through cyst germination or isolation of single cells. Invasion and establishment of Ceratium furcoides (Dinophyceae) in an urban lake in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil Acta Botanica

ABSTRACT Ceratium furcoides has received attention due its invasive behavior in South America and consequent alterations in local phytoplankton communities. Pedalinhos Lake had been dominated by chlorophytes until 2015, when the first occurrence of this dinoflagellate was detected. In order to investigate the colonization process of this species, we monitored the meteorological variables and phytoplankton abundance of this urban lake on a weekly basis from September 2015 to September 2018. Three species of the genus Heterodinium Kofoid are reported for the first time in coastal waters of the Colombian Caribbean. The identified species are Heterodinium rigdenae Kofoid, 1906, Heterodinium agassizii Kofoid, 1907 and Heterodinium angulatum Kofoid y Michener, 1911. Information about distribution of these species in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico is given.

A fast and practical method for initial diagnosis of Piscinoodinium pillulare outbreaks: piscinootest Ciência Rural

ABSTRACT: The dinoflagellate Piscinoodinium pillulare is a parasite with low parasitic specificity and unspecific geographical distribution. This research reported a simple and practical method - the principle of spontaneous sedimentation - to identify the presence of P. pillulare during massive infestations which does not require using precision equipment. Agitation in water of the gill arches of infested fish will elicit, after a period of rest, recording the accumulation of trophonts in the bottom of flasks. The method was applied during outbreaks of P. pillulare in tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum and matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus, in fish farms of the Amazon region and proved to be effective.
