TRANSMER, un modèle hydrodynamique rapide et précis pour la simulation à moyen et long terme des transferts de radionucléides en Manche et dans le sud de la Mer du Nord ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
TRANSMER hydrodynamic model simulates dispersion of dissolved substances in seawater at the scale of the English Channel and the south of the North Sea with a mesh size of one kilometre and a time step of 30 minutes. It has been qualitatively and quantitatively validated by 1400 measurement of 125Sb in seawater. This model evaluates the medium- and long-term consequences of releases of soluble pollutants in the marine ecosystem under normal or accidental conditions, at a very low computation cost (it takes less than one hour to simulate one year).

Open ocean regimes of relative dispersion ArchiMer
Ollitrault, Michel; Gabillet, Céline; De Verdiere, Alain Colin.
As two fluid particles separate in time, the entire spectrum of eddy motions is being sampled from the smallest to the largest scales. In large-scale geophysical systems for which the Earth rotation is important, it has been conjectured that the relative diffusivity should vary respectively as D-2 and D-4/3 for distances respectively smaller and larger than a well-defined forcing scale of the order of the internal Rossby radius (with D the r.m.s. separation distance). Particle paths data from a mid-latitude float experiment in the central part of the North Atlantic appear to support these statements partly: two particles initially separated by a few km within two distinct clusters west and east of the mid-Atlantic ridge, statistically dispersed following a...

Insect drift and the case of Mayrinia curvidens (Mayr) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) drift on the southern atlantic coast of Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Lazzari,Sonia M.N.; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Grazia,Jocélia.
Insect drift on shore of lakes and seas is a relative common phenomenon although apparently not frequently reported in the literature. Here we review the worldwide occurrence of insect drift with emphasis on Heteroptera, and speculate on possible causes to explain such phenomenon. The dramatic drift of million of specimens of the pentatomid Mayrinia curvidens (Mayr) on the shore of the southern coast of the Atlantic ocean in Brazil is reported for the first time. This drift, previously observed to occur in the mid 70’s on the coast of Paraná state with minor intensity (A.R. Panizzi, unpublished) was again observed on January 2006 along the Atlantic coast of Paraná (latitude 25º 45’ S), where an estimated population of 16 to 18 million of dead specimens of...

The ichthyofauna of drifting macrophyte mats in the Ivinhema River, upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Bulla,Cíntia Karen; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Miranda,Leandro Esteban; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
We describe the fish assemblages associated with drifting macrophyte mats and consider their possible role as dispersal vectors in the Ivinhema River, a major tributary of the upper Paraná River, Brazil. Fish associated with drifting mats were sampled in the main river channel during January and March 2005, when the wind and/or the increased water level were sufficient to transport macrophyte stands. Fish in the drifting mats were sampled with a floating sieve (4 m long x 2 m wide x 0.6 m high, and 2 mm mesh size). In the laboratory, larvae, juvenile, and adult fish were counted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. In four drifting macrophyte mats we captured 218 individuals belonging to at least 28 species, 17 families, and 6 orders....

Modélisation de la dispersion du phosphogypse dans le golfe de Gabès OceanDocs
Bejaoui, B.; Raïs, S.; Koutitonsky, V..
This work concerns the modeling of the phosphogypsum dispersion emitted by the chemical industries in the gulf of Gabès. The CORMIX model based on the dimensional analysis theory is used for this study. An analysis of the sensitivity of the model parameters was initially made; eight simulations were then carried out to determine the space extent of pollution on the level of the gulf. For each condition of tide, we carried out four simulations, two concerns the high tide and two concerns the low tide. Simulations showed that pollution by phosphogypsum is spread out in space over a surface of about 60 km2.

Reversibility of the Hardening Process of Plinthite and Petroplinthite in Soils of the Araguaia River Floodplain under Different Treatments Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Martins,Angélica Pires Batista; Santos,Glenio Guimarães; Oliveira,Virlei Álvaro de; Maranhão,Deyvid Diego Carvalho; Collier,Leonardo Santos.
ABSTRACT Although ferruginous materials occur frequently in soils of tropical regions, information about the reversal of the hardening process of these materials is scarce. This study assessed the influence of different chemical treatments and periods of immersion on the reversibility of the hardening process of plinthite and petroplinthite in soils of the Araguaia River plain. Soil samples were collected from the plinthic horizons in 0.10 m high and 0.15 m diameter PVC cylinders and divided into subsamples with a rock hammer. Homogeneous petroplinthite samples were also collected and broken into subsamples with a rock hammer. The plinthite and petroplinthite subsamples were subjected to five immersion treatments: distilled water, calcium carbonate...

Study of the combined radial post-feeding dispersion of the blowflies Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) and C. albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Gomes,Leonardo; Von Zuben,Claudio José.
Blowflies use discrete and ephemeral substrates to feed their larvae. After they run out of food, the larvae begin to disperse in order to find adequate places for pupation or additional food sources, a process named post-feeding larval dispersion. Some important aspects of this process were studied in a circular arena allowing the combined radial post-feeding dispersion from the center of the arena of C. albiceps and C. megacephala larvae. To determine the location of each pupa, the arena was divided in 72 identical sections starting from the center. The distance from the center, the depth and weight of each pupa were evaluated. Statistical tests were done to verify the relation between weight, depth and distance for pupation. From the total an average of...

VASCULAR EPIPHYTES: THE UGLY DUCKLING OF PHENOLOGICAL STUDIES Acta biol.Colomb.
RAMÍREZ-MARTÍNEZ,Adriana; MONDRAGÓN,Demetria; RIVERA-GARCÍA,Raúl.
ABSTRACT The phenology of vascular epiphytes, which account for about 10 % of the world's flowering plants and perform important ecological functions, has been just partially explored. Since phenology is a key tool for the management and conservation of species, the objective of this review was to synthesize the information published so far about the phenology of vascular epiphytes, detect gaps of knowledge, and suggest future lines of investigation to understand the underlying mechanisms. We conducted an online search for articles in Google Scholar and in the ISI Web of Science database from 1800 to 2020, with different combinations of keywords. 107 studies addressing the phenology of different holoepiphyte species were found; 88 % of the studies were...

Reproductive Biology of Varronia curassavica Jacq. (Boraginaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
HOELTGEBAUM,MARCIA P.; MONTAGNA,TIAGO; LANDO,ANA PAULA; PUTTKAMMER,CATARINA; ORTH,AFONSO INÁCIO; GUERRA,MIGUEL P.; REIS,MAURÍCIO S. DOS.
ABSTRACT Varronia curassavica, a subshrubby medicinal species associated with restinga in the Atlantic Forest, has been exploited by local people and the pharmaceutical industry. Indeed, restingas have experienced a continuous process of degradation, and thus, with species and ecosystem both at risk, efforts to support conservation actions are required. The present study aimed to evaluate aspects of V. curassavica reproductive biology. To accomplish this, morphological characterization was performed by monitoring flowering events. The availability of nectar and pollen, as well as the frequency and behavior of floral visitors and dispersers, was also evaluated. This species exhibits both heterostyly and protogyny. Anthesis is diurnal, and flowers last less...

Spatial Distribution of Euschistus heros (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum Linnaeus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
WEBER,ANDERSON C.; DEGRANDE,PAULO E.; SOUZA,ELLEN P. DE; AZAMBUJA,ROSALIA; FERNANDES,MARCOS G..
Abstract Recently, the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Pentatomidae: Hemiptera), has been detected in cotton in the Brazilian Cerrado. Several reliable surveys have been conducted on the spatial distribution of stink bugs in soybean; however, few studies have examined the behavior of this insect in cotton in Brazil. Thus, this study examined the spatial distribution of E. heros in cotton using aggregation indices based on the variance-to-mean ratio, Morisita index, exponent k, Poisson and negative binomial distributions. Inverse Distance Weighting interpolation maps were also used to represent insect density. The study was conducted in a 1.1 hectare experimental cotton field in which 64 equally-sized plots were sampled on a weekly basis. Our...

Tetanorhynchus leonardosi (Mello-Leitão) (Orthoptera: Proscopiidae), nova praga em eucaliptos Anais da SEB
Flechtmann,Carlos A.H.; Ottati,Angelo L.T..
We report for the first time the attack of the walking stick Tetanorhynchus leonardosi (Mello-Leitão) (Orthoptera: Proscopiidae) on young eucalyptus, Eucalyptus urophylla, in Brazil. The upper third of the trees was attacked (apical meristems and new leaves). During the hottest hours of the day the insects were found sheltered between leaves on the median third of the plants, and feeding when temperatures were milder. The attack was heterogeneous in the stand, being more concentrated when it was neighbouring an area of native 'Cerrado' vegetation. Mean defoliation was 5.8%, with an average of 5.2% of plants with apical meristems cut by the walking sticks. An application of Methyl Parathion was not effective against the pest. Apparently plants older than 6...

Frugivory by the White-bearded Manakin (Manacus manacus, Pipridae) in restinga forest, an ecosystem associated to the Atlantic forest Biota Neotropica
Cestari,César; Pizo,Marco Aurélio.
Manakins (Pipridae) are one of the most abundant fruit-eaters and seed dispersers in the understory of neotropical forests. We describe the fruit diet of the White-beaded Manakin (Manacus manacus) based on a two-year study of its foraging behavior on fruiting plants, collecting seeds from feces and regurgitations of trapped individuals, and from lekking males' courts in restinga forests at the southern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Manacus manacus consumed 58 species of fruits from 30 different plant families. Fruits were taken at 3.5 ± 1.9 m height and 1.5 ± 1.6 m below the forest canopy using mainly sally-strike and glean manoeuvres. Most of the fruits were berries ranging from 3.1 to 17 mm in diameter and containing from 1 to 86 seeds. Fruits...

Colonization of artificial substrata by teredinid larvae released from a previously infested focus at Ilha Grande Bay, RJ BABT
Varotto,Ricardo Silva; Barreto,Cristine Costa.
The colonization pattern of wooden panels by teredinid larvae released from a previously infested focus was investigated. Panels were placed at different distances (1, 10, 20m) and in different directions from the focus. The colonization experiment took place at Parcel do Aleijado, Ilha Grande Bay, RJ. The focus remained immersed in nearly surface water, by the coast, during three months for infestation by teredinids. After this period, it was transferred to the study site. The infested focus and colonization panels remained in water, 10m deep, for three months more. Total density and density of the dominant species were considered for each group of panels. Five teredinid species were found: Bankia fimbriatula, Bankia gouldi, Lyrodus floridanus, Lyrodus...

Geostatistics applied to the study of the spatial distribution of Tibraca limbativentris in flooded rice fields Ciência Rural
Pazini,Juliano de Bastos; Botta,Robson Antonio; Seidel,Enio Júnior; Silva,Fernando Felisberto da; Martins,José Francisco da Silva; Barrigossi,José Alexandre Freitas; Rübenich,Rodrigo.
Tibraca limbativentris (rice stem bug) is an insect highly injurious to the rice crop in Brazil. The aim of this research was to define the spatial distribution of the T. limbativentris and improve the sampling process by means of geostatistical application techniques and construction of prediction maps in a flooded rice field located in the "Planalto da Campanha" Region, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. The experiments were conducted in rice crop in the municipality of Itaqui - RS, in the crop years of 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12, counting fortnightly the number of nymphs and adults in a georeferenced grid with points spaced at 50m in the first year and in 10m in the another years. It was performed a geostatistical analysis by means adjusting...
