Stomatal responses of Eucalyptus species to elevated CO2 concentration and drought stress Scientia Agricola
Lima,Walter de Paula; Jarvis,Paul; Rhizopoulou,Sophia.
Five species of Eucalyptus (E. grandis, E. urophylla, E. camaldulensis, E. torelliana, and E. phaeotrica), among the ten species most commonly used in large scale plantations, were selected for studies on the effects of elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] and drought stress on stomatal responses of 2.5-month old seedlings. The first three species belong to the subgenus Smphyomyrtus, whereas the fourth species belongs to the subgenus Corymbia and E. phaeotrica is from the subgenus Monocalyptus. Seedlings were grown in four pairs of open-top chambers, arranged to have 2 plants of each species in each chamber, with four replications in each of two CO2 concentrations: 350 ± 30 mumol mol-1 and 700 ± 30 mumol mol-1. After 100 days in the chambers, a series of gas...

Water-deficit tolerant classification in mutant lines of indica rice Scientia Agricola
Cha-um,Suriyan; Yooyongwech,Suravoot; Supaibulwatana,Kanyaratt.
Water shortage is a major abiotic stress for crop production worldwide, limiting the productivity of crop species, especially in dry-land agricultural areas. This investigation aimed to classify the water-deficit tolerance in mutant rice (Oryza sativa L. spp. indica) genotypes during the reproductive stage. Proline content in the flag leaf of mutant lines increased when plants were subjected to water deficit. Relative water content (RWC) in the flag leaf of different mutant lines dropped in relation to water deficit stress. A decrease RWC was positively related to chlorophyll a degradation. Chlorophyll a , chlorophyll b , total chlorophyll , total carotenoids , maximum quantum yield of PSII , stomatal conductance , transpiration rate and water use...

End of season drought at pod filling and maturity stages can severely reduce yield and increase the risk of aflatoxin contamination. Peanut varieties with resistance to drought may reduce Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin contamination. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of late season drought during 80 days after planting (DAP) until harvest on A. flavus infection and aflatoxin contamination and to estimate the correlation coefficients between traits related to aflatoxin contamination and the correlation coefficients between traits related to drought resistance (SPAD chlorophyll meter reading (SCMR) and specific leaf area (SLA)) and traits to aflatoxin contamination (A. flavus infection and aflatoxin contamination) of 6...

Drought stress could induce expressions of various genes that are involved in stress tolerance and responses. Recent studies were emphasized on a gene encoded for the 9-cis epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) enzyme which catalyzes the biosynthesis of abscisic acid (ABA) in plants. However, little is known about drought tolerance genes in maize. We designed primers from the VP14 sequence in the NCBI gene bank for the study of expression of drought tolerance gene in SW 2301 drought tolerant and KSX 4605 drought sensitive lines. The RT-PCR showed an expression of drought responsible gene in SW 2301 drought tolerant line. Under drought condition, the expression of the responsible gene was higher in stem apical meristem than in root and leaf tissues. The cDNA...

Sunki mandarin and Swingle citrumelo as rootstocks for rain-fed cultivation of late-season sweet orange selections in northern São Paulo state, Brazil Bragantia
Girardi,Eduardo Augusto; Cerqueira,Thales Sandoval; Cantuarias-Avilés,Tatiana Eugenia; Silva,Simone Rodrigues da; Stuchi,Eduardo Sanches.
ABSTRACT In Brazilian regions affected by the citrus sudden death disease, sweet orange cultivation depends on the use of resistant rootstocks. Rangpur lime was mainly replaced by Swingle citrumelo and Sunki mandarin rootstocks, more drought-sensitive ones. The diversification of scion selections is also desirable aiming at the increasing demand for not from concentrate orange juice (NFC) that requires high-quality fruits. In this work, we evaluated the performance of 6 selections of Valencia (IAC, Dom João, Late Burjasot IVIA 35-2, Rhode Red SRA 360, Temprana IVIA 25 and Campbell) and Natal IAC sweet oranges grafted onto Swingle citrumelo and Sunki mandarin. The planting occurred in 2001 under rain-fed cultivation in Bebedouro, northern São Paulo state,...

Grain yield stability of wheat genotypes under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions BABT
Okuyama,Lauro Akio; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos; Barbosa Neto,José Fernandes.
Analyses of genotype by environment interactions were carried out for wheat genotypes grown under irrigated and non-irrigated field conditions, in two sowing dates during three years. The linear regression method was used to analyze the stability of grain yield. Genotype by environment interactions was observed for grain yield in all groups of environments. Nesser was the most productive and stable genotype in all groups of environments, followed by IAPAR 17-Caeté. In the late sowing, better yield performances were observed for the cultivars OCEPAR 7-Batuíra, IAPAR 17-Caeté and Nesser, under irrigated condition, and Nesser and IAPAR 28-Igapó, under non-irrigated condition. The results indicated that Nesser gave high grain yield with superior adaptability...

Photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency in sugarcane genotypes subject to water deficit during early growth phase BABT
Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Jifon,John Lonfover; Santos,Claudiana Moura dos; Jadoski,Cleber Junior; Silva,Jorge Alberto Gonçalves da.
The objective of this study was to compare the gas exchange, photosynthetic capacity and water potential of sugarcane genotypes cultivated under water deficit conditions imposed during the initial growth phase. Experiments were performed in a greenhouse using two sugarcane genotypes namely: HoCP93-776 (drought susceptible) and TCP02-4587 (drought tolerant). Sixty days after planting, two different water treatments were applied (i.e., with or without water deficit). At 0,30 and 60 days after the treatment, gas exchange variables were evaluated for their relationship with water use, intrinsic instantaneous water use efficiency and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency. The SPAD index, photosynthetic pigments, water potential and relative water content in...

Photosynthesis and cell respiration modulated by water deficit in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Cabernet Sauvignon Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Martim,Sílvia A.; Santos,Mirella P.; Peçanha,Anderson L.; Pommer,Celso; Campostrini,Eliemar; Viana,Alexandre P.; Façanha,Arnoldo R.; Bressan-Smith,Ricardo.
Winegrape productivity and quality has been related to the regulated deficit irrigation, with important implications for the plant bioenergetics. When water deficit is imposed to grapevine plants, alterations in overall photosynthesis and cell respiration are observed. The aim of this study was to assess the modulations promoted by water stress on photosynthesis and respiration in leaves of the cv. Cabernet Sauvignon (cv. CS) for better understanding the physiological responses related to its drought tolerance and quality improvement under water deficit. For this purpose, measurements of photosynthetic efficiency, leaf water potential, gas exchange and O2 consumption were carried out. Leaf water potential, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance,...

Water relations and some aspects of leaf metabolism of Jatropha curcas young plants under two water deficit levels and recovery Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Arcoverde,Gabriela B.; Rodrigues,Bruno M.; Pompelli,Marcelo F.; Santos,Mauro G..
Stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration (E), relative water content (RWC), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), leaf carbohydrate soluble (LCS), free amino acids (FAA) and total protein (TP) content were measured under mild and severe drought stress in young potted Jatropha curcas L. in the greenhouse. The plants were kept for 12 days under three different water regimes, control (well hydrated), 50% irrigation control (mild stress) and 25% (severe stress), after rehydration were measured on the second and fourth day. Both mild and severe stress decreased g s and E; however, only severe stress reduced LCS, FAA and TP content and increased SOD activity (70%) and MDA content (60%) compared with the control. Moreover, under these...
