Association of angiotensin-converting enzyme activity and polymorphism with echocardiographic measures in familial and nonfamilial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy BJMBR
Buck,P.C.; Fernandes,F.; Arteaga,E.; Matsumoto,A.Y.; Araujo,A.Q.; Oliveira,E.M.; Ianni,B.M.; Ramires,F.J.A.; Krieger,J.E.; Mady,C..
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity and polymorphism contribute significantly to the prognosis of patients with cardiomyopathy. The aim of this study was to determine the activity and type of ACE polymorphism in patients with familial and nonfamilial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and to correlate these with echocardiographic measurements (echo-Doppler). We studied 136 patients (76 males) with HCM (69 familial and 67 nonfamilial cases). Mean age was 41 ± 17 years. DNA was extracted from blood samples for the polymerase chain reaction and the determination of plasma ACE levels. Left ventricular mass, interventricular septum, and wall thickness were measured. Mean left ventricular mass index, interventricular septum and wall thickness in familial...

A pulsatile flow model for in vitro quantitative evaluation of prosthetic valve regurgitation BJMBR
Giuliatti,S.; Gallo Jr.,L.; Almeida-Filho,O.C.; Schmidt,A.; Marin-Neto,J.A.; Pelá,C.A.; Maciel,B.C..
A pulsatile pressure-flow model was developed for in vitro quantitative color Doppler flow mapping studies of valvular regurgitation. The flow through the system was generated by a piston which was driven by stepper motors controlled by a computer. The piston was connected to acrylic chambers designed to simulate "ventricular" and "atrial" heart chambers. Inside the "ventricular" chamber, a prosthetic heart valve was placed at the inflow connection with the "atrial" chamber while another prosthetic valve was positioned at the outflow connection with flexible tubes, elastic balloons and a reservoir arranged to mimic the peripheral circulation. The flow model was filled with a 0.25% corn starch/water suspension to improve Doppler imaging. A continuous flow...

Diastolic function is associated with quality of life and exercise capacity in stable heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction BJMBR
Bussoni,M.F.; Guirado,G.N.; Roscani,M.G.; Polegato,B.F.; Matsubara,L.S.; Bazan,S.G.Z.; Matsubara,B.B..
Exercise capacity and quality of life (QOL) are important outcome predictors in patients with systolic heart failure (HF), independent of left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF). LV diastolic function has been shown to be a better predictor of aerobic exercise capacity in patients with systolic dysfunction and a New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification ≥II. We hypothesized that the currently used index of diastolic function E/e' is associated with exercise capacity and QOL, even in optimally treated HF patients with reduced LVEF. This prospective study included 44 consecutive patients aged 55±11 years (27 men and 17 women), with LVEF<0.50 and NYHA functional class I-III, receiving optimal pharmacological treatment and in a stable clinical...

Echocardiographic evaluation of dogs subjected to different protocols of anesthetic induction Ciência Rural
Cardoso,Helena Mondardo; Tocheto,Ronise; Padilha,Vanessa Sasso; Silva,Gizelli; Comassetto,Felipe; Andrade,James Newton Bizetto Meira de; Oleskovicz,Nilson.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to investigate the echocardiographic changes during anesthesia induction in dogs sedated with acepromazine (0.05mg/kg) and butorphanol (0.3mg/kg) (AB). Twenty-four male dogs, with a mean weight of 12.40kg±3.1kg, were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=6). Fifteen minutes after administering pre-anesthetic medication, anesthesia with diazepam (0.5mg/kg) and etomidate (1mg/kg) (group DE); diazepam (0.5mg/kg) and ketamine (3mg/kg) (group CD); propofol (4mg/kg) (group P); or ketamine (1mg/kg) and propofol (3mg/kg) (group CP) was administered to the 6 dogs in each group. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured and echocardiography was performed immediately prior to the application of the sedation protocol (baseline),...

Pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging of the myocardium of cats with induced thyrotoxicosis Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Daniel Capucho de; Borlini,Daniel Cometti; Santos,Warley Gomes dos; Monteiro,Jessica Nascimento Moraes; Costa,Lorena Adão Vescovi Séllos; Sobrinho,Aloir Queiroz Araújo; Costa,Fabiano Séllos.
Left ventricular myocardial motion was quantified using pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging (PW-TDI) in nine adult cats before and after thyrotoxicosis induction. In order to induce thyrotoxicosis, all cats were given 150µg kg-1 of levothyroxine sodium as a single oral dose each day for 10 weeks. PW-TDI examinations were performed immediately before the induction and by the end of the experimental protocol. An increase in myocardial motion velocity was documented at the interventricular septum level, demonstrated by an elevation in systolic (Sa), and early (Ea) and late (Aa) diastolic waves (P<0.05). However, no alteration in Sa, Ea and Aa values was seen at the lateral mitral annulus. Heart rate increased significantly between the experimental stages,...

Cardiac index by thermodilution or transthoracic echocardiography in dogs at different hemodynamic states Ciência Rural
Gehrcke,Martielo Ivan; Cardoso,Helena Mondardo; Regalin,Doughlas; Silva,Gizelli da; Padilha,Vanessa Sasso; Moraes,Aury Nunes de; Oleskovicz,Nilson.
ABSTRACT: Proper monitoring of cardiac index (CI) in critically ill patients requires accurate and minimally invasive methods. The aim of this study was to compare the CI values obtained by thermodilution or echocardiography using different methods in dogs in different hemodynamic states. Nine dogs weighing 19.6±1.3kg were anesthetized with isoflurane at 1.4V% (Baseline) and subjected to mechanical ventilation (MV),a hypodynamic state (Hypo) with isoflurane at 3.5V% and hyperdynamic state (hyper) with dobutamine infusion at 5μgkg-1min-1. CI analysis was performed by thermodilution (TD) and using the modified Simpson's method, aortic velocity-time integral (A-VTI) method and pulmonary VTI (P-VTI) method. We performed Pearson's correlation and Bland-Altman...
