THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL PROCESSING AND FARM INPUT MANUFACTURING IN THE NORTH DAKOTA ECONOMY AgEcon
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The purpose of this report is to estimate the economic impact of farm input manufacturing and value-added agricultural processing in the North Dakota economy. Economic impacts for these agriculturally-linked sectors are in addition to those for direct agricultural (crops and livestock) production. This analysis will provide state-level estimates of key economic indicators including levels of business activity, retail trade, personal income, secondary employment and tax revenues associated with these agriculturally-linked sectors. A survey of the 76 farm input manufacturing and 160 agricultural processing firms in North Dakota was conducted to obtain expenditure patterns. In-state outlays by these firms were allocated to sectors of the economy and divided...

Adoption of Improved Wheat Technologies by Small-Scale Farmers in Mbeya District, Southern Highlands, Tanzania AgEcon
Mussei, Ahaz; Mwanga, Judicate; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; Mongi, Rose; Elanga, Anthony.
This study was conducted to gain an understanding of how small-scale farmers in Mbeya District have adopted improved wheat technologies promoted by the wheat research program at MARTI-Uyole. The specific objectives were to assess farmers’ wheat management practices, determine the technical and socioeconomic factors affecting the adoption of improved wheat technologies, and draw implications for research, extension, and policy. A purposive multistage sampling procedure was used to select 202 farmers, 160 from Tembela Division and 42 from Isangati Division, which are two important wheat-growing areas in Mbeya District. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires and supplemented by secondary information obtained from MARTI-Uyole. Juhudi was...

THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURE IN THE NORTH DAKOTA ECONOMY - SUMMARY AgEcon
Leistritz, F. Larry; Lambert, David K.; Coon, Randal C..
The purpose of this report is to assess the role of agriculture in the North Dakota economy. This analysis is both statewide and regional in perspective (data are provided for each of the state's eight planning regions). Key indicators used in the analysis include sales for final demand (i.e., sales to out-of-state markets), gross business volume (gross receipts), gross state product (value added), and direct employment for each economic sector. The analysis reveals that, although its role in the North Dakota economy has been reduced in a relative sense, agriculture remains a cornerstone of the state economy and remains the largest goods and services exporting sector. While agriculture accounts for smaller shares of state sales for final demand, gross...

Recreation, Tourism, and Rural Well-Being AgEcon
Reeder, Richard J.; Brown, Dennis M..
The promotion of recreation and tourism has been both praised and criticized as a rural development strategy. This study uses regression analysis to assess the effect of recreation and tourism development on socioeconomic conditions in rural recreation counties. The findings imply that recreation and tourism development contributes to rural well-being, increasing local employment, wage levels, and income, reducing poverty, and improving education and health. But recreation and tourism development is not without drawbacks, including higher housing costs. Local effects also vary significantly, depending on the type of recreation area.

Yield and quality of densely cultivated onion cultivars as function of nitrogen fertilization AGRIAMBI
Gonçalves,Francisco das C.; Grangeiro,Leilson C.; Sousa,Valdivia de F. L. de; Santos,Jandeilson P. dos; Souza,Francisco I. de; Silva,Luiz R. R. da.
ABSTRACT Nitrogen exerts a marked influence on the yield and quality of the onion. The present work was developed from June to October 2016, aiming to evaluate the yield and quality of two cultivars of onion under a system densified as a function of nitrogen doses in Mossoró, RN, Brazil. A randomized block design was used in a 2 x 7 factorial scheme, with four repetitions, corresponding to two cultivars (IPA 11 and Rio das Antas) and seven nitrogen doses (0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225 and 270 kg ha-1 of N), provided by fertigation, with four repetitions. The dose of 92 kg ha-1 of N provides the highest total and marketable yields of bulbs. Nitrogen fertilization increases the concentrations of N, chlorophyll a, b and total in the leaves of the onion, as well as...

Development of a calculation model and production cost index for feedlot beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Sartorello,Gustavo Lineu; Bastos,João Paulo Sigolo Teixeira; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a feedlot beef cattle calculation model and production cost analysis and, from the results obtained, devise a production cost index. A case study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the productive processes of a commercial feedlot. Then, based on the Economic Theory, cost items of the farm under analysis were identified and transferred to a spreadsheet. The survey included ten feedlot farmers from the state of São Paulo and other nine from the state of Goiás and was carried out to determine representative properties, and prices of items used were monitored. Production costs of each farm were calculated, and theoretical concepts of index numbers were used to devise the feedlot cattle...
