The adoption of water saving irrigation practices in the Region of West Macedonia AgEcon
Michailidis, Anastasios; Nastis, Stefanos A.; Loizou, Efstratios; Mattas, Konstadinos.
The use of irrigation water for agricultural production requires innovative and sustainable research and an appropriate transfer of water saving technologies. The main aim of this paper is to explore the irrigating behaviour of farmers examining factors affecting their decision to adopt novel water saving practices. In order to achieve the above aim both summary statistics and multivariate methodologies are employed. In particular, a two-step cluster analysis was used to explore the different adoption levels of water saving practices and a categorical regression model was estimated to explain this variation. Data were collected through a survey addressing 400 irrigators, carried out in 2008 in a typical Greek rural area. Results show that although...

CIMMYT's Formal Training Activities: Perceptions of Impact from Former Trainees, NARS Research Leaders, and CIMMYT Scientists AgEcon
Cooksy, Leslie J.; Arellano, Elias.
This report provides information on the impact of CIMMYT training, based on a set of background interviews with center staff, reviews of relevant data and documents provided by CIMMYT, and two surveys: one of research leaders in trainees’ countries of origin and one of participants in CIMMYT courses on maize and wheat improvement, quality protein maize, soil-borne pathogens of cereals, and maize stress breeding during 2002-04. Evidence indicates that training provided by CIMMYT not only furnishes new knowledge and skills, but results in new ways of thinking about research and new research partnerships, is often shared within trainees’ home institutions, and changes the way the institutions work. The evidence in this study establishes the existence of...

Effectiveness of agricultural extension with respect to farm size: The case of Uganda AgEcon
Betz, Michael R..
Raising the incomes of agricultural households is central to reducing poverty in Uganda. In many areas of the country agriculture has encroached into marginal or fragile lands, leaving little room for the expansion of agricultural lands (Kraybill, Bashaasha, and Betz 2009). Additionally, soil degradation has become a barrier to agricultural productivity (Pender et al. 2004), especially in the Eastern region of the country. Farmers now look for alternatives that will increase output without further depleting soil fertility or expanding into fragile lands. Agricultural extension is the primary government mechanism through which developing country governments attempt to improve the knowledge and methods that farmers use to increase output; However, many...

THE INCREASING ROLE OF AGRIBUSINESS IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AgEcon
Heiman, Amir; Miranowski, John A.; Zilberman, David; Alix-Garcia, Jennifer Marie.
While the demand for traditional agricultural economics is diminishing, there is a growing need for the economics and management of the food sector and the environment. Departments of agricultural economics have shown great flexibility in including agribusiness in their Bachelor's and Master's teaching programs. Ph.D and research programs appear to adjust more slowly to changing demand. Although agricultural economics programs are providing a variety of service course offerings, opportunities for joint programs with biological, physical, and natural sciences, particularly resource management, are not being exploited. If business schools decide to compete for agribusiness students in the future, missed opportunities with other departments and schools may...

STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS EXTENSION; OR DOES DIFFEDENCE, DECADENCE AND DISSONANCE MAKE A DIFFERENCE? AgEcon
McDowell, George R..
Discussion of changes taking place in American agriculture followed by a review of the traditional model of extension suggests there is dissonance between what is needed to inform contemporary agriculture and what extension actually does. The paper further suggests that difficulty in packaging the newly needed information in ways that achieve the institutional maintenance objectives of extension explain a part of the system's decadence and reluctance to charge. Since the intellectual problems of market failure, even political market failure, are within the domain of economists, diffidence by agricultural economists to those issues within the Land-Grant system can make a difference.

Cash Wheat Marketing: Strategies for Real People AgEcon
Brorsen, B. Wade; Anderson, Kim B..
A new paradigm is needed in extension marketing programs. Attempts to help producers time the market, either through cask sales or futures trading, appear to be of little benefit. Marketing extension programs need to place less emphasis on outlook and futures trading and more emphasis on simple marketing strategies that people really use. An empirical example of strategies for Oklahoma wheat producers shows selling cash wheat at harvest and participating in government programs as the preferred marketing strategy. Implications for extension programs in other states are that extension programs can help producers decide whether to store their grain and whether to participate in farm programs.

Preference for Risk Management Information Sources: Implications for Extension and Outreach Programming AgEcon
Rejesus, Roderick M.; Knight, Thomas O.; Jaramillo, Mauricio; Coble, Keith H.; Patrick, George F.; Baquet, Alan E..
This article examines farmers’ preferences for various risk management information sources. Our results suggest that information from risk management experts, in-depth materials studied on their own, and popular press outlets tend to be preferred and are ranked highly by producers. Using a regression model to investigate farmer/farm attributes that affect preference for a particular risk management information source, we find that younger farmers with college education, higher leverage, assets greater than $1 million, risk-loving attitudes, and who have used professional services (marketing consultants) tend to prefer information from risk management experts, the Internet, and marketing clubs/other producers. On the other hand, producers who prefer...

Pricing an Extension Service for Organic Farmers and Growers AgEcon
Parminter, Terry G.; Botha, Neels; Tanner, Jon.
The organics sector is expanding rapidly and the Board of Organics Aotearoa New Zealand considers that the future provision of an extension service is needed to underpin the ability of producers to efficiently convert to organic systems and then to further develop the sustainability of their systems. This project commissioned by Organics Aotearoa New Zealand in 2008 considers four possible organisational structures for delivering such a service. The first possible structure is a complete extension service for organic producers that combines national coordination, standard setting and information management with a local problem-solving and sector development service. Option 2 is a more centralised option, especially useful for producers at the beginning of...

Factors Influencing the Selection of Precision Farming Information Sources by Cotton Producers AgEcon
Jenkins, Amanda; Velandia, Margarita M.; Lambert, Dayton M.; Roberts, Roland K.; Larson, James A.; English, Burton C.; Martin, Steven W..
Precision farming information demanded by cotton producers is provided by various suppliers, including consultants, farm input dealerships, University Extension systems, and media sources. Factors associated with the decisions to select among information sources to search for precision farming information are analyzed using a multivariate probit regression accounting for correlation among the different selection decisions. Factors influencing these decisions are age, education, and income. These findings should be valuable to precision farming information providers who may be able to better meet their target clientele needs.

Szekely, Csaba.
The development of Hungarian agricultural business economics and management used to evolve in accordance with international leaders of the sector. On the other hand, a paradox situation has emerged in Hungary in the last two decades, in which such knowledge is only partially applied as a consequence of insufficient knowledge transfer and highly restructured agriculture. In the framework of an EU-6 research project, reviewing the agricultural risk management practices of some EU Member States, including Hungary, became possible. The study highlights those issues that are the most characteristic in terms of the level of information, management, marketing and finance. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the level of management of Hungarian agricultural...

An Assessment of the Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts of the Ricecheck Program AgEcon
Singh, Rajinder Pal; Brennan, John P.; Lacy, John; Steel, Felicity.
Ricecheck, a best management practices extension program for rice production in Australia, was developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries advisory staff, Finley, in 1986. The program is based on eight best management practice recommendations called ‘Key Checks’ that are considered essential for achieving high yields. Economic analysis of the program reveals that there are significant financial, social and environment benefits from the adoption of the program. The results further reveal that the funds invested since 1986 by both NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation have been sound investments.

Does It Matter Who Scouts? AgEcon
Lichtenberg, Erik; Berlind, Ayesha Velderman.
Scouting is the most widely used integrated pest management technique adopted by U.S. growers. This study applies an implicit demand formulation of the Lichtenberg-Zilberman damage abatement model to data from a survey of Maryland field crop growers to examine differences in pesticide demand between growers using scouts trained and supervised by extension and those using chemical dealer employees or scouting themselves. The results give partial support to those skeptical of the quality of scouting by farmers themselves and by consultants working for chemical dealers. Soybean growers using extension-trained scouts had significantly lower pesticide demand than those using chemical dealer employees or scouting themselves. However, no significant differences...

THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONAL AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS ASSOCIATIONS IN SHAPING NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL POLICY: THE CASE OF SERiA AgEcon
Florkowski, Wojciech J..
This paper describes the establishment of the professional organization of agricultural economists in Poland as the response of the profession to uncertainties associated with the transition to a market economy and the demand for socio-emotional goods. This demand and the accumulated social capital were essential for the successful functioning of the SERiA. The example of establishing a similar organization can be repeated if adequate social capital and the desire for distinction, self-regard and validation coincide.
